No matter what anyone thinks on this board, Howden is apparently very popular and respected in the locker room and by management. In addition to DeAngelo's comments, I had a conversation with Ryan Strome at an event and Howden came up. He had a ton of respect and admiration for #21. Couldn't stop gushing about him.

ok but he’s a bad player

It's a bit ironic because people want this team to stick up for eachother and rise to the occasion in the playoffs, which often means playing with a competitive fire and having that comraderie with your teammates. By watching the reaction of his teammates and by watching him play, Tony clearly brings all of those elements.

I honestly love when Tony comments. More players should speak out when it's deserved.
And one of Tony's issues with Vince's trade was he attached a 1st round pick to Tony, didn't think it was a fair trade. Plus for all we know Tony and Vince have a good relationship and he can joke around with him that he didn't like the trade.

With all due respect to DeAngelo, I don't think people have "zero" idea what they are talking about, but maybe they do not have the entire picture.

That being said it's obvious, with or without knowing what you are talking about, that there is not really any data that suggests Howden is very good. Hardworking, likable, and playing both ends of the ice is great, if it nets positive results, but I don't know by what measurement Howden gets you positive results.

He is still young, so there's that.

He might be right, but none of those qualities he listed make Howden a good player.

He needs A LOT of work. The only thing he really has going for him is that he is young and our bottom 6 was a shit show, but he was a big part of said shit show.

Keep piling on, the mob will join you, but it won't matter, people smarter than you run the organization and they love him.

The sad thing is, he'd be the ideal pick for the Rangers with a second first.

The problem is the first is looking to be just too damn far away to get into range for him.

Carolina about to bow out helps at least.

The beauty of Fast is that he can play up and down the lineup depending on the need. You are not going to have everyone available for every game. Fast can move to any line and fill a need. I don't think the plan was ever to play him with Panarin this year but look what happened. He kills penalties, plays the shift after the power play when other teams usually counter with their first line and is by all accounts a leader in the locker room. He is very valuable to any team, especially this one.

I almost feel like I'd rather Fast than Buch and I DEFINITELY feel like I'd rather Fast than Strome.

Given their assumed prices and fit long term.

People smarter than me who run this organization decided it would be a good idea to pick Lias Anderson.

People smarter than me who run this organization LOVE Marc Staal and believe he is still an NHL worthy defenseman.

People smarter than me who run this organization think Brett Howden is a great hockey player.

It appears that the people who are smarter than me who run this organization are wrong every now and then.

This isn't me dumping on the FO, they've done more good than bad over the last few years, but the appeal to authority approach is like the weakest form of an argument ever.

tony deangelo is a breath of fresh air. kids uber talented and a bit of a dic*. so what ?

hes political and opinionated. so ? hes plugged in. very woke from my perspective. and he loves to bust balls. he isnt plain vanilla.

i have zero problem with him. on the ice or off it.

mark messier wasnt a choir boy either.

Make The Rangers Dickheads Again.

I take what players say about each other with a grain of salt.

1) They're probably friends.

2) Hockey players especially are the types that would overvalue hard work and toughness and undervalue being actually good.

These are all opinions of someone trying to push an agenda and not telling the whole story.
A) There's still no way to tell if Lias was a bad pick, he hasn't played a season in the nhl yet. For whatever reason he felt he deserved a roster spot out of camp, the rangers didn't, he sooked and went home. Has nothing to do with the pick, nobody predicted this and every other gm who talked about the pick said he was the most nhl ready player in that draft.

B) NOBODY, loves marc staal the player. We are stuck with his contract and a void on the left side. He has leadership qualities they like but he wouldn't be there if he didn't have that contract or if we had better options on LD.

C) Your opinion of Howden is just that an opinion, doesn't mean the organization is wrong.

Everything Tony D said about Howden is true. However, while the things he listed are what make Howden a good teammate, they're not what necessarily translates to on ice results.

He's a hard worker and he tries to play the right way and he seems to be willing to do whatever he needs to do. But you can't ignore the lack of growth at the NHL level in his time as a pro. Nobody is expecting him to be a selke level center right away but the kid still seems lost most of the time out there. Sure, he's trying hard and as a teammate you always want guys by your side who you know are doing everything the right way and trying 110% at all times. But that doesn't mean criticism of his game isn't valid.

It's also why GMs need to look at things from a different angle than players and coaches. Evaluation with different points of view is very important.

Yes to both, especially number 2. There is nothing a hockey player values more in a teammate than them being hard workers. It's so baked in to hockey culture that players will overlook objectively bad on ice results and will focus on work ethic and toughness. Not that there's anything wrong with weighing those things heavily, don't get me wrong. It just is a blindspot players often have in their analysis.

It's complicated when it comes to players being able to be objective about their teammates. It's why players don't make roster and coaching decisions - for good reason.

A. Which other GM said this? There are many of us, not just a few, many of us who wanted a different player at that spot and lo and behold, the player we wanted has turned out better.

Does that make us savants worthy of a scouting job? No, but it does mean the Rangers were off on that one. Shit happens, people miss on players all the time, they're human, which means that they can, and sometimes, are wrong.

B. This organization is hopelessly devoted to Staal. They moved a superior player to forward for most of the season just so that there was a spot for him to play. They continued to send him out there no matter how bad he was. I haven't seen him called out once for his performance outside of being benched for 3 games (which really looked like a move to try and wake the team up more than it was about sitting a player who doesn't deserve to play.)

C. My opinion is backed up with a ton of evidence. Its not like I want the player to suck, I would much rather him be as good as you and the front office/coaching staff think that he is.

What would it take to get Alexander Ovechkin on the Rangers? He could be a great veteran player and captain.

Not sure if you're joking, but I'd wager there's a 99.9 percent chance he re-signs with Washington.
