new york itself is an issue. life is comfy here - so many distractions and luxuries.

most guys here just don't want to work that hard. the cost of living is expensive, taxes etc so i guys want top dollar salary. frankly i'm not sure that part will ever change.

can we get a top 4 euro defenseman? these americans and canadians can't get it done.

Life is comfy in NY? News to me. I’ve lived here my whole life and it gets harder every year. The problem with this team of entitled interlopers is that they are so removed from reality they think they are the victims. I wish they gave a f*** nearly as much the hardworking people who root for them and giving their weekly salary just to have the ”privilege” of getting to watch them mope around the ice. This team will never achieve anything until they work as hard at their day jobs as the people who root for them.

It’s kind of his fault, his first offseason was a disgrace, and he believed in this sack of shit team enough to waste tons of picks on them for rentals who didn’t solve any of their fundamental issues as a team. I wouldn’t bat an eye if he got fired and we went in a different direction honestly.

Mark Messier president and GM. I wouldn’t do it but that’s the next stop on this train,

I know it's easy to tell GMs to not give NMCs. But in order to be competitive with FAs you need to give them. The owners have to do something about NMCs. I'm sorry, you don't get to make millions of dollars and not perform and keep your f***ing job. No one likes to be traded, I know I wouldn't but if you're going to get paid millions then some concessions need to be made. Just going through the motions and collecting a paycheck should NEVER be an option.

And what exactly are the players getting in return for losing NMCs? Unless of course you're suggesting teams collude and don't offer them, at which point the PA has a super easy lawsuit waiting

All these guys were here before Drury was in charge. The players have had 3 coaches and they get more apathetic with every passing season. If Drury sits on his hand and done nothing after calling out the players, he should be fired. But I don’t blame him at all for this fiasco.

Yes and no.

He extended Zibanejad. He has made the decision to keep Lindgren around. He hasn’t really addressed anything that has plagued this team for years.

he didn’t actively go out and spend a f*** load of money on Trouba and Panarin before they knew what the f*** they had but what real improvement has he made?

Almost everything on this team and in the organization of any significance was here before he got the job. Trocheck had been awful this year but to this point has mostly worked out. What has been his second most impactful move? Gustafsson? He was here for a year.

Drury was the AGM so you have to assume he was onboard with at least most of what was going on while Gorton was at the helm and thought that team was heading in the right direction, at least generally, with a few tweaks here and there. So it makes sense he manly stayed the course with the 'core' at least in the short term.
He overplayed his hand at the deadline every year, but it would be interesting to know how hard he was pushing for trades throughout the seasons but wasn't finding any takers. In-season trading really does seem to be a thing of the past unfortunately.

Unless Dolan has a buddy in mind then you have to assume Drury will get the chance to do 1 rebuild/retool, and ongoing employment will dependent on how that goes

I’m with you. The time for talk is over. What he does over the next few weeks are going to decided if he continues to be employed.

I don't know man. But if there's ever a case against f***ing unions. Literally if it were up to the PA the players would all sit home and collect a paycheck. The fact that Mika can't be moved is a f***ing disgrace. What a charmed life he lives.

Do any of the other three leagues have NMCs and NTCs? Because f*** me, they're a disgrace.

The f*** does this mean? I don't think the GMs are under any obligation to offer a NMC as part of a contract

Honestly, not to make this political but why the f*** do athletes that have a very specialized skill and are basically unicorns as humans and make millions of dollars need a union? We're not talking about plumbers here. Players have a ton of leverage already based on their limited in supply skills. They now need an incentive to go through the motions and make millions of dollars?

One of the many reasons is because they used to not make millions (especially compared to league revenue) until they became unionised

Pretty sure the MLB and NBA do have at least NTCs. And honestly good for the NHLPA for pushing for them to be in the CBA. You wanna be mad at someone for the reason we can't get rid of Zibanejad so easily? Blame Drury for structuring the contract to be essentially buyout proof.

No they're not. But if one GM's offering an NMC and another isn't, with similar money on the table, why WOULDN'T you take it?

And if all the GMs stopped offering them all at once, it'd be easy to prove collusion b/c at the end of the day they're a tool to get players to sign, and every GM in the league would be knowingly choosing to put themselves at a disadvantage in contract negotiations

Yeah sure, not disagreeing on any of that. I was just wondering WTF you were talking about in terms of "an easy lawsuit" for the PA.

Well ok and who says that they are entitled to millions anyway? I'm just pissed because frankly if I'm a player with an NMC for 6 years what incentive do I have to even try at my job? If you were making 8 million dollars for 6 years at your job, wouldn't you just be incentivized to go through the motions? All I can think of is internal competitiveness and pride. But not every player has that.

Ah gotcha. I guess what i was trying to say is "If every team suddenly out of the blue decided not to offer NMCs, all at once...easy lawsuit"

Yeah, and I'm still asking why would that be a lawsuit? NMC is something the teams can choose to offer a player, and not offering them is not in anyway breaking any law. At least to my layman way of thinking, though I know I'm speaking from a different jurisdiction.

I’d clean house starting with waiving Trouba tomorrow if there are no takers.

Staple quoted an unnamed western conference GM who said 25 teams would try to sign Shesterkin next summer even if it cost $13-14 million AAV. If that’s true, find the team that wants him that badly and trade him there.

Then consider moving Panarin and Zibanejad in the summer if possible.

But not every player has that.

At a simple level, the market says they are. Because if the NHL said "you guys aren't worth it" and stopped paying so highly, someone else would come in and offer the big bucks because they know they'd be able to get the players to come and play for them.

Every player is different, but the incentive usually comes from wanting to be 'the best' where $$ is the by-product of what you are doing. I half-arse my job right now (I spend half my work day talking shit on here) and I certainly don't get paid millions; but in a competitive industry, where I care and want to prove myself, and I love the challenge, then of course I'm working hard even when paid.
High performance industries tend to work differently to the more regular 9-5ish ones.
And yes, some players will have less compete than others (while still having far more than most people, you don't get to the top level of something like professional sport without it), and some will eventually rest on their laurels, but that's the nature of the beast

Shesty to Colorado seems to make far too much sense, but they don't have a 1st this year which is a bit annoying

Truthfully I wouldn’t mind it but I feel like people will yell at me if I said that.
i know .. it could easily be worse.. lol but who knows. You need certain king of players here... and although they are talented.. they don't have identity. poorly constructed roster.
