Washington did well here.
The issue is. AM is due 5.8m this next year. If we wanted to make this deal we would have needed to know we could clear the nec cap space AND somehow find a draft pick that could have matched WSH. Perhaps CAL could have retained, but that likely would have meant a higher pick or multiple picks that we just don't have. That said, AM is pretty solid and a good addition. If WSH misses the playoffs this year, they could likely recoup the pick.

Everyone is forgetting the problem with Buchnevich at the time was paying him $3M -> $6M was going to make the roster very very difficult to work the second Adam Fox went from 825k/yr to $9.5M.

If they did make it work, there's no money for Vincent Trochek for example and a huge 2C hole for example.
They could have just not signed Barclay Goodrow.

I wasn't implying we should've made that trade. We can't afford that cap hit nor should we have paid what CGY would've wanted to retain.

Yea but Buch wasn’t going to play 3 starting positions on the roster….

Plus the money already spent long term on wingers and future wages forecasted from Laf/kakko
Yes but Nemeth and Reaves could have been minimum salary, replacement level players.

That's sort of a separate topic. After Tom Wilson almost murdered Panarin to a resounding complete lack of reaction, they were always getting some gritty mcgrits. The roster had proven itself incapable of protecting each other.

Yeah, not that simple. It's also a product of A.) Salary Cap and B.) Expectations for Kakko. Goodrow alone didn't cost them a shot at Buch.

The trade was shit. It's always been shit. But there were other things in play besides not signing this guy or that guy.
