I think, from the Rangers perspective, if you can end up with a Nino for Clutterbuck type trade where you’re obviously losing in pure value but at least getting a team improving contributor out of it then you take it and call it a day.

You’re likely not getting a straight up W out of any trade you make in this situation unless getting TDA out of here ends up being a big time addition by subtraction.

Yup and I think that's a good example of what we might be looking at here. Giving up the Mustang for the minivan, so to speak.

This is the kind of “media speak” that I think just muddies waters and is meant to maintain amiable relationships with all parties to preserve sources, etc. but actually just ends up blurring credibility.

Player “officially” requests trade and its widely reported.

Neither team, nor player (nor agent) comes out and directly says there’s no trade request, but some media start reporting that “sources have told them” there was no trade request.

Player is scratched while trade rumors persist, but sources assure us it has “nothing to do” with the widely reported, but now disputed, trade request.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire. It seems like a silly dance of false pretenses to maintain polite relationships amongst everyone so that you can report rumors without sullying your connections to sources. Bennett is a healthy scratch amid rumors he’s requested a trade. I’m not saying that means something is imminent, but it certainly ain’t a coincidence.

Sure. He's the perfect fit for a team with a lot of solid defensive defensemen, but no real PP QB. He can get sheltered 3rd pairing minutes and then run the power play.

Trick is there aren't many of those teams left. The 2006-2009 NY Rangers would have been perfect though lol.

I agree. DeAngelo in a different time period for us would have been more of a need. With Fox and with Lundkvist coming along and both players who defend better it made him replaceable.

Jack Johnson must have caught it years ago.

I KNEW JMFJ was the source of this pandemic. I just knew it...

At least Trouba still has all his teeth

I would like to get bennett here, but one issue I see is IF we were to make an ada/bennett swap with even money bc of another forward coming from the flames than what money is NYR trading out to be able to add another NHL caliber d man.

Right now we need a bottom 9 forward for depth to lengthen the lineup, if we are removing an everyday nhl d man to get that player than we still need to add a d man. I understand ada is not playing here again, but all that means is we need a forward AND d man instead of just the forward we were wanting before.

ada goat and a pick/prospect for bennett kylington and ryan? Play with various salary retentions of bennett ryan and/or ada however you need to in order to make the cap work for both teams (talking percentages and not major amounts).

cap friendly has a buyout calculator so you can lookup an accurate buyout for ANY player contract in the NHL. Very useful tool

thank you - b/c of Hank, Staal, Shatty, etc i'm pretty good with the veterans yet was unaware of the rules for younger players. Afterall, how often does a kid get signed to a new contract and put on waivers 7 games into that contract?

Thanks for the guidance. Cheers

From what Edge has told us in the past, I'd be shocked if it wasn't Calgary we're in deep negotiations with. It's possible but less common that a trade quickly happens between two teams that haven't talked much. That said, its certainly possible that the Flames are just one team involved.

This may exist, but I'd love it for someone to explain all the minutiae that has to happen for a hockey trade (involving NHL players swapped both directions) to go from a conversation to a finished, completed trade. I know, Nerdy

Calgary has Derek Ryan’s 3.25M buried right now. Bennett makes 2.5x2. Ryan is expiring. DeAngelo makes 4.8M.

DeAngelo for Bennett and Ryan is perfect. Ryan falls off the books after this year but balances salaries for this year. Calgary is left with one year of ADA and we’re left with one year of Bennett, both RFAs after. We can include Gauthier to give them a replacement forward if he isn’t gonna play here.

Bennett was #4OA in 2014, Tony was #19. Tony has had more success but has more warts. Bennett has some small chance of benefitting from a change of scenery, but brings desirable traits we’re lacking either way.
Derek Ryan is only buried between games. He has played all 9 games this season. While him and Bennett have bad numbers this season, they have both still been roster players for Calgary. I highly doubt they'd be willing to trade them both at the same time.

He was drafted a year earlier than Kakko. Last year, he had 21 points (albeit in something like less games than Kakko but the points per game are not materially different). Maybe our 19 year olds just need development time?

That is my point. Maybe some teams are just really good at developing their talent and it doesn't matter as much who they draft.

Is it a coincidence Tampa keeps hitting homeruns with late picks? Or are we chalking that up to good scouting/luck? Maybe Tampa just has a better "academy" in place in Syracuse.

IMO, more than fair question to ask.

Imo our scouting staff has to look more towards North America than overseas, they did it this year but in general i find our picks are based overseas, there's a lot of extra questions that cant be answered until the player gets to N.A about non north american players.

Comparing what the Rangers have done back to the early 90's does not really make sense. What is germane is what is going on under the current regime. And a false argument to begin with as Buchnevich has clearly been developed here. Callahan, whatever you think of him, was clearly developed here. Dubinsky, whatever you think of him, was clearly developed here. So are we talking about forwards or high end forward draft picks?

If Farabee is being used as a comp to the perception that Kakko not developing, I will point out that the former is a year older, had a full extra year of development before he jumped into the league and last year was really not all that better offensively.

And there is no sense whatsoever to use him as a comp to Lafreniere.

I think Tampa also has the benefit of being judged by their 2014-2020 success.

What we overlook is how much that organization still struggled for years after taking Stamkos and Hedman at 1 and 2 respectively, or that high picks like Connolly, Drouin and Koekkoek didn't really have the desired impact of their lofty draft positions.

I'm not sure that there's a secret formula at work other than patience.

Basically we are in a spot equivalent to Tampa's 2011/12, while using the accomplishments of Tampa's 2020 as the measuring stick.

But should be examined with context. Using Farabee as a comp, as he was a first round pick. Going back all the way back to 1990 does not seem like a reasonable thing to do, so let's just look at the last 10 years. 2010's first round brought McLRath. Not a forward. 2011 brought JT Miller. Are the Rangers going to be given any credit for his development? Fair discussion. 2012 brought Skjei. Not a forward. 2013 through 2016 had no first round picks. 2017 brought both Andersson and Chytil. The latter looks to be developing well. The former, in looking in what is going on in LA, may simply not be what most hoped for. Jury is still out. And no matter what happens to him, considering that he took his ball and ran home when they were trying to develop him, it's debateable what the culpability is.

Now you have Lafreniere and Kakko.
