Can someone explain why there are rumours of an ADA trade when he passed waivers? Why would a team trade for him after they passed on him for free? What am I missing?

He makes $4.8m against the cap this year and next. Teams generally can't absorb that kind of money without sending money back in the deal. So now that the Rangers have him on the market, those teams can send a bad contract our way in the deal and/or have the Rangers eat some of Tony's contract to lessen the burden on the new team.

If teams are “lining up” for his services and are willing to part with roster players, other than making the numbers work why wouldn’t they just claim him at 100% and not lose any assets?

You make a good point yet it’s possible this Covid market is dictating beyond the norm. Operating income is down league wide with many teams in the red and barley in the black. It’s possible nobody is adding $4.8 million without shipping something out. Teams may also look at their current rosters for next hear and recognize x, y or z is getting paid much more or needs to be resigned, etc. With a flat cap teams may move players out to obtain a TDA.

Vegas was trying to move Reilly Smith in the off-season. 2 years at $5m.

He actually popped in my head last night as well. I thought I remembered his name being out there but couldn't find a source on it in limited digging. That seems like too much of a hockey trade to come to fruition though. Unless Vegas has really soured on Smith over the last year I gotta think they'd rather hang onto him.

And the other part of the answer, based on Gorton’s comments is this;

It doesnt sound like the Rangers were aggressively trying to trade him when this latest incident happened. If things hold true that Gorton told Tony if one more incident happened he would be put on waivers and that he had to stick to his word, then this make sense. In that case, its not as if Gorton was shopping him for the last two weeks. If that is true, then the incident happened saturday night and he was put on waivers Sunday morning. That is a very short turnaround time to get 30 “No’s” throughout the league for a 25/26 year old RHD that is only making $4.8 million AAV. Then of course all the rumors started flying about him. The Rangers squashed all of those rumors. And again as you mentioned, teams dont have the cap space to take on $4.8 million right now. Teams could barely fit in guys like Haula, Hoffman, and Granlund. They are up against the cap ceiling.

So no I am not surprised to see what is transpiring with the interest around the league.

Just think of all the brother commentary!

Older brother, younger brother, could have the parents on zoom, side by side interviews, ask them which one they think is better... this stuff writes itself!

...

for the love of all that is holy...please don't let this happen...

Like a year ago I was suggesting a TDA for Alex Tuch trade. Nobody who disagreed was doing so for poor reasoning at the time, but man would I love that trade now lol
id take that and run but fans would turn on Tuch cause he is not tough or physical as Kreider. I do like him as a player. def worth a risk but rather go after Bennett who fills a need as Center.

Was looking at some bad contracts on those teams and had an awful thought of Lucic being involved

Tony's buyout being so cheap definitely complicates things. I don't see why Gorton would agree to take on a bad contract when the absolute worst that can happen is that Tony rots at home for the rest of the year until he's bought out for a pittance.

I understand that no one claimed him on waivers, but very few teams in the league have the cap space to just absorb his deal.

I personally think the list of suitors might be a little longer than some might expect. I also think the return could be a little better than most expect.

If I'm Gorton, I'm looking closely at pending RFAs, or an RFA/UFA with a year or two left on their deal in the $3M range. I'm sure there are names out there that fit.

We're not going to have to take back a bad contract IMO. We'll almost certainly get an inferior player to Tony, but I really don't expect scraps, either.

Based on the teams @Edge threw out there, I could see:
ANA
Heinen

CGY

Bennett

FLA
Connolly
Duclair
Gudas

VGK
Reaves
Holden

I also wouldn't rule out a larger deal. A team like Vegas is so incredibly cap-strapped that they can't take even a penny more than they're sending out. It might make for some interesting moves, especially since we're one of the few teams in the league that actually has cap space to work with.

So I think you are right. I did some searching and it looks like teams were asking about him as Vegas was clearing cap to sign Petriangelo. Vegas wasn't interested at the time.

Martinez and Marchesault, and fleury at the time, were rumored.

Gorton likes him and knows him though. I don’t disagree with any of this. That is why it was an awful though

I think everybody likes him but he can’t play anymore. His legs are gone and his wrist shot is gone (likely damaged through fighting). He’s too slow on defense. He’s a power forward who is done attached to a hefty salary with a flat cap.

If Gordon made this move you have to question his psyche. Why didn’t he just resign Fast?

I don’t think anyone likes him. Except for Gorton.

Bennett knocked down Josh Manson

you mean to tell me Rangers fans would not love this guy. sticking up for teammates. what if that was Panarin, Kakko or Mika getting rocked.

I love Bennett. I think that what he’s been in Calgary isn’t necessarily exactly what he’ll be if he moves. I’m not saying he’d “breakout” at this point. I’m just saying he could find a better fit or more defined role and clearly brings some good things. He’s played more wing than center, but he’s played enough center that he certainly can still be used as one. He’d be a GREAT fit for Panarin’s off wing.

Honestly, if Bennett is moved and we don’t grab him, I’ll be very disappointed. He should be an affordable player and not saying anything about position or production, he brings a feistiness and GO level that this team desperately, desperately needs.

Looking at Florida’s roster no real names jump out at me for a DeAngelo trade

maybe one of their bottom 6 forwards like Accari or Vatrano

Nuttivara would be a sweet pickup but they just got him not sure they’re looking to dump him already
