Yeah I see that. What I don’t fully understand is, if both Gorton and Brisson think a deal is likely to be made, what was the point of waivers? The only logical reason would be that the Rangers think any trade involving Deangelo will involve retention, and they preferred the slight chance that someone would take him off waivers at full cost, and they prefer that to retention + whatever return may be on the table.
1) To get him away from the team as soon as possible.

2) Waivers were necessary to move him to the taxi squad, and start accruing the cap benefits thereof.

3) They may believe that the asset acquired in losing him outright for nothing ($4.8MM in cap space this year and next) is more valuable than the range of deals currently under discussion (most, if not all of which probably require Rangers to retain ~$2.4MM over the next two years).

So I’ve been working all day and could only glimpse at the boards and the game until now.

I’m glad I was otherwise occupied. What a shit show this place has been today. I just scanned this entire thread and saw more dumb than I’ve ever seen in one place. I don’t even know where to start.

Gorton is not the problem here. He’s managing a lot of personalities, a very young organization and a demanding set of bosses. I think he does his job well, some parts of it very well.

Tony DeAngelo was/is the problem. His actions are unacceptable. Yes, I know benching a guy for two games for popping off at a referee is tough to swallow. Watching Fox take your job on PP1 isn’t to be ignored either. Nevertheless, when you are told this is your last chance you act accordingly. Tony did. Case closed.

The Rangers will survive this nicely. DeAngelo wasn’t in the long term plans here. We all knew that. The Rangers will get a return but probably not the bounty we had all hoped for.

The team proved a lot tonight. They scuffled, blocked shots and did everything necessary to win. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that this incident will bring the team much closer. Long term, this could prove to be a seminal moment for the growth of a young group.

And as with any crash, there’s collateral damage. Seeing JD take down our blogger friend was priceless. Perhaps we could also ask him to take down a couple of the rogue posters who seemed to come out of the woodwork today.

How bad is his value? and is the package bigger than just ADA?

Say the barometer is 50% retained for Bennett. Better, worse or on par?

ADA+Gauthier for Tuch?

Even without a slow start and an altercation, I get the sense that ADA’s value around the league was going to be far more modest than Rangers fans wanted to hear.

I would set a very modest expectation at this point for ADA.

Would Bennett be considered modest? and would they be targeting another top9 player or a defenseman?

I still maintain I will be stunned if a team takes a shot on him at this point. Way too much baggage for a mid season deal.

Maybe a really bad contract w a similar or slightly worse buyout to get a body in the door this year.

I’d be interesting in pursuing White.

JFC I must not have as much time for hockey as I used to- I thought you were both talking about longtime Devils defenseman Colin White who has been out of the league 10 years.

Yeah, it’s him flanked by Pacioretty and Stone. That line has been consistently dominant since it was put together, mainly because Mark Stone is a freak of nature, but Stephenson is a very simple, efficient player that helps their engine run. His scoring numbers won’t stand out, but you’ll notice how good he is when you see them play

I don't want to throw out the term player coach, or anything that would end up in the rumor mill, but there is a reason why that line posts up those numbers. There are two other teams that pull it off, and it starts in the d-zone. That's why their numbers are the way they are. I don't want to get into the details here publicly, but you can jack up the corsi through a couple of adjustments in your end-zone in conjunction with designed breakouts. Stephenson just became a big dollar earner because of it.

Keep an eye on Calgary and Vegas, possibly Florida and Anaheim.

With Calgary, is it possible Kylington could be an option? Who knows with Smith and Johnson and right now we've got Bitetto and Hajek as spares. Anaheim scratched Henrique the other day. I wouldn't want retention on this one since its a 4 year deal. I'm not sure about the other two.

Deangelo cap hit if bought out
383,000 next year
883,000 the year after

Trading him and retaining more than that means that we would be looking to get an actual decent asset back. Retaining 2.4 million means we should be getting a playable decent asset back to make it worth it.
