But the thing is, good teams can move players up and down the lineup in a pinch, that' s depth. Howden is not a 3C, and if Chytil is going to be out weeks or any other player in the top six down the middle, you're in trouble. That line will not be putting points up. I remember when Stepan had his jaw broken during the cup run, the NYR had Dom Moore move up at times. He was solid. He forechecked well, was defensively responsible, had speed, puck skills, etc. Does Howden have much of any of that?

I dont think you are being objective in your evaluation of Howden's talent level. There's been too much dirt thrown on him here and now everyone focuses on every little mistake like he's the only one allowed not to make a mistake. Moore averaged 20 points during his time here, Howden is on track with that at 19 last year and 23 the year before.

Alberta gave the ok for games to start on 2/26 so he went back to his junior team. the other provinces haven't given the ok yet so those teams don't have a start date

Got it, makes more sense, thanks.

I doubt it very much that Gorton would only want a warm body for this season as a return for ADA. The value is damaged but Stepan for one season on expiring contract, leadership and all, wouldn’t be it unless there could be something of a decent value (a 2nd rounder?) to get for him at trading deadline. Whatever the return is going to be - there will be a piece that has some long(er) term possibilities, like a young player, a prospect or a pick.

Hockey is a dirty sport. Hockey is a violent sport. Hockey is a chippy sport. I don’t know where this obsession with class came from, but hockey is a sport that is full of boarding, elbowing, slashing, spearing, slew footing, late hits, charging, high hits, fights, chirps and trash talk. It used to be a sport full of guys full on swinging sticks at each other’s heads.

If there’s any perception of class it’s because of handshake lines and the fact that guys sometimes do answer the bell for their actions or that they fight but then they clap one another on the shoulder and say good tilt. It’s “classy” because it’s a game with lots of old traditions and a “code of honor”. It’s not f***ing cricket. It’s a dirty, violent, physical, sneaky game. There are classy players in it, and even many of those classy players are still sneaky dirty sometimes. I don’t know where this pinky up “classy” notion is coming from. It’s a sport where a guy takes a high stick, spits a bloody tooth on the ice, skates down the ice, finds the guy who clipped him and buries him into the corner. It’s a sport where a guy catches your teammate from behind and you go rip his gloves off and try to pound his face in. It’s a sport where players have been licking their chops seeing a guy come down the center lane with their head down since they were 14 because he’s gonna get his clock cleaned. That’s hockey.

It seems to me that people look at other sports where people show emotion and think the hockey is classy because the players are robots. I actually don't like either approach, and I like something in the middle.

Do other fan bases obsess over bringing back former players as much as this one does?

Do you guys really want to see Derek Stepan take PP minutes away from one of the younger guys and eventually work his way into the top 9? Because that is exactly what will happen if he comes here. It's the Quinning Mentality.

I'd be open to it if he stuck on the 4th line and took PK duties away from Mika, but there is no way his usage will be that limited.

Did they walk back the no checking rule for the OHL? Would really neuter Cuylle game if he has to go back

I'm not for reacquiring Stepan, but no one's dumb enough to give him PP minutes, not even over Strome and Lemieux.

Felt a little sad today when I looked in the mirror and saw how much covid weight I’ve gained over the last year...

Then I remembered we didn’t sign this guy and boom, I immediately felt great!

Yeah but none that bad. I’ll take Trouba and his contract over EK right now.

Abd the only other bad contract we really have is Kreiders, and it’s not that bad to begin with. Smiths too but he’s a goner next year.
Yeah, and San Jose also has Vlasic too. Would hate to be a fan of that team right now

We've invested too much in Smith to just let him walk now.

I would happily give Stepan PP2 minutes over Lemieux or Howden.

The issue is less with Stepan than it is with a spot for him. Now, if we were looking to move Strome I would definitely consider Stepan as a veteran replacement (as long as he cost next to nothing) to fill his role. Strome isn’t as slow but considering how lazy he is there’s an argument that Stepan plays faster than him.

He is definitely a shell of the player he was while he was here but he doesn’t look that bad. At 6.5 cap hit no chance but at 50%? I think he could be a useful bottom 6 player.

Plus I still have my Stepan jersey that my wife bought me 4 months before he got traded, would be nice to break that bad boy out again.
