Bennett is in there because this is gonna be a ROUGH game.

Even that cement head Rinaldo is dressing.

As I always say when this topic comes up- Matt Cooke ended Marc Savard's career. On the ice was Milan Lucic. Also on that team were Zdeno Chara, Shawn Thornton, Adam McQuaid, Byron Bitz and Johnny Boychuk. Somehow even knowing that the Bruins would "keep him honest" and "make him answer the bell" it didn't stop Cooke.

Because the threat a fight doesn't stop someone from throwing a bad hit. Bad hits happened in hockey pre-instigator rule and in the days when there were way more fights.

If someone wants to make a case for fighting that's fine, but the idea that it stops bad hits is just flat out illogical based on the above.

What pisses me off and this is probably less of an issue nowadays but it used to be that people were talking out of both sides of their mouth when it came to hockey. On the one hand it's classiest sport with the classiest players, on the other hand if players didn't punch each other in the face you'd have all of the best players taken out by cheap shots. You can't have both takes.

No one is rushing out to acquire DeAngelo. First rounder that has run through three NHL organizations and has a history dating back to juniors. GMs are doing their diligence. If he does something again, everyone will be able to say of course.

It's a spectrum between those two opposites. There are plenty of players, so of course both can be true to an extent.

Yea, would have to agree most likely Calgary got cold feet and / or didn’t like something uncovered in “dligence”...not surprising.

I would guess it is a cap / money issue. As others mentioned Gorton has little incentive to retain salary or take a bad contract other than getting rid of the issue.

You see a fight every 5 games maybe. Other sports survive without the fighting, just let it f***ing go.

I think hockey has adjusted, its not premedated fights like Domi and Probert anymore, its two guys fed up with each others stick work that settle it. University hockey in Canada has a no fighting rule and its the dirtiest game going, the slashing, hooking and dirty hits are increased big time, with some of the biggest tools there the smallest players who know they can irritate people and get away with it. Its not going anywhere in the NHL thank F.

I would guess its the players last interaction with his team before he was sent home. They know the cap going in.

I have no idea if that is true or not but if it is it is not because fighting isn't in the game. It's because the officials aren't calling enough penalties to let the players know the standard.

Not sure how you can be both, unless one of those things is the exception.

Because top players get the Lady Byng, and 4th line plugs try to run top players. You're talking about two different groupings of players.
Either generalizing the "top-end of sportmanship in the league" or the "bottom-end."
Both of those statements can be true, as long as one's preconceived notions didn't already "pick a side."

There's a Jungian term called "terium non datur." Loosely translated to "the third option reconciles the opposites."

Elias Lindholm is so good

From the day he was drafted, I’ve always wanted Elias. He was underwhelming in Carolina but I still really liked him. Didn’t expect him to be AS good as he’s been in Calgary, but I always felt like if a team took a chance on him he’d be a very solid two way player worth 50ish points. Turns out he’s much better than that.

Good example of a change of scenery making a difference though. Obviously his numbers were a bit better than Bennett’s since he had 21-45 points in each of his first 5 years, but he broke out at 24 AFTER being traded with a completely unexpected 78 points. Bennett is also 24. Scaling things down to account for difference in production prior to the trade, it isn’t impossible that Bennett would go from a 26 point guy to a 50 point guy. Lindholm was traded at 24 and went from a 40ish point guy to 78.

Not really, if there are two groups of players and there are enough dirty players, hockey then is dirty sport, not a classy one, no matter what Don Cherry spews.

Fighting is a good pressure release valve. Another factor is that pretty much everyone wears a visor now, and ain’t nobody want to bare knuckle punch one of those.

Brian Burke was on Sportsnet during the Intermission and he basically said if he was the GM he would be interested in DeAngelo. Said he cant say thats the case for every GM, but if it was him he would be asking for an interview with the player, doing his due diligence. He spoke about how from all accounts Tony is a popular teammate but his filter is bad and so was his timing, which we basically all know. Essentially it sounded like an endorsement.

We’ll see what happens

And that isn't likely to change either.

Hockey is a dirty sport. Hockey is a violent sport. Hockey is a chippy sport. I don’t know where this obsession with class came from, but hockey is a sport that is full of boarding, elbowing, slashing, spearing, slew footing, late hits, charging, high hits, fights, chirps and trash talk. It used to be a sport full of guys full on swinging sticks at each other’s heads.

If there’s any perception of class it’s because of handshake lines and the fact that guys sometimes do answer the bell for their actions or that they fight but then they clap one another on the shoulder and say good tilt. It’s “classy” because it’s a game with lots of old traditions and a “code of honor”. It’s not f***ing cricket. It’s a dirty, violent, physical, sneaky game. There are classy players in it, and even many of those classy players are still sneaky dirty sometimes. I don’t know where this pinky up “classy” notion is coming from. It’s a sport where a guy takes a high stick, spits a bloody tooth on the ice, skates down the ice, finds the guy who clipped him and buries him into the corner. It’s a sport where a guy catches your teammate from behind and you go rip his gloves off and try to pound his face in. It’s a sport where players have been licking their chops seeing a guy come down the center lane with their head down since they were 14 because he’s gonna get his clock cleaned. That’s hockey.

To sum it all up... Mark Messier lol
