Gauthier gets so little ice time and manages to generate a good scoring chance by himself at least once a game. I'm not blown away by him or anything, but why isn't he getting a look this year?
Because he’s a winger? We have 6 quality wingers at the moment, he’s number 7/8 depending on what you value.

He'll get his shot, he's on the bottom six kid units. It's a long season, guys will get dinged up. Part of being a good leader is getting your guys to step up, you'll eventually have a game where some of the bumps and bruises add up, so that's when you can step up. Also make the most of your shifts. But yes, I agree, he's looking really good. On both ends of the ice. He should get more chances if he and boys can coordinate more on net front drives, especially creating passing options for each other by spacing out for an easier pass.

Seriously, if he is good defensively, that is a major league plus. The Howden unit needs to keep communicating out there, it makes the game easier for each other imo, think they did a really good job in the win, and got better as the game went along last night.

It's not that long of a season this year.

Do you actually think someone would claim JJ or Smith on waivers? How aren't they all waiver fodder? Honka is just a lot younger and cheaper.

I do not know if they would get claimed or not.

I would expect that todaay, Smith would not get claimed due to salary issues, later in the season when his salary is paid down, I would expect he would get claimed by a PO teaam.

JMFJ, probably not.

And while Honka is younger/ cheaper, he's no better so what's the point?

NYR need dmen that can play the PK. Smith and Johnson can, Honka cannot. He played 3 seconds of it a game in his biggest NHL campaign.

Honka is like Poeck- he could be a PP dman on a team absolutely desperate for a blueliner with any offensive instincts, but he's useless to anyone else. I could see the Senators claiming him.

It worries me that our coach is more worried about getting Strome going than putting our young guys in a position to succeed.

It's because he's all aboard the "playoffs are a must," philosophy.

You don't tank on purpose, maybe.

But come on. Everyone has to realize that development is goal A, winning is goal B.

I feel fine about Lindgren, Trouba and Fox getting PK minutes. Smith, Johnson (and sure, Honka) would all be bad options on the PK. This is not an effective argument against claiming Honka for free depth and waiving Johnson.

I don't agree that Smith or Johnson are as bad as PK options as Honka. But I think that kind of hits the bedrock on our disagreement there if that's the debate.

That Smith can play both sides without a problem is a huge bonus. Sure, I'd be fine cutting JMFJ loose, but I think Raddysh and Bitteto aren't any worse than Honka tbh. His game reminds me of Sanguinetti. Gets pushed around like a child

You can do A and B at the same time though. A will lead to doing B.

Im most annoyed by the fueling of the Strome struggle bus, which doesn't help anyone. It doesn't help the team, it doesn't help Strome, it doesn't help Adam Fox's wizardry and it sure as hell doesn't help the other guys who should be getting his PP time.

I'm not interested in a debate about which of three bad options is worse in a limited scenario like PK which none of them should be on.

If you think that Smith plays either side without a problem, youre watching a different Smith.

Honka has shown more upside than Raddysh or Bitteto, who also aren't getting PK minutes.

It amazes me that beat writers in general have no problem writing hit pieces about players but never have the balls to ask the hard questions when they talk to coaches. (This isn't directed at Vince, by the way)
Because it’s tough to continue and try and maintain a real relationship that your work depends on, while also asking a question that points out the person is a dumbass.

DQ: Strome hasn’t found his game yet. Let me keep feeding him 20min a night until he does!

Also DQ: Kakko hasn’t found his game yet. DEMOTED!!!!
This is it right here. There are players who are not important long term to this team getting the benefit of the doubt over guys who will be our future. Quinn is so far in over his head it’s insane.

This. I get what Quinn is trying to do with teaching young players accountability and “easing” them in, but Kakko isn’t a rookie anymore and is a priority asset to this organization. He should be given just as long to find his game as Strome.

If we’re going to demote kids and cut their PP time for not “finding the on switch” than Chytil, who is now in his third full season but actually seeing NHL action for the 4th year in a row - and actually has a goal and an assist for 2pts in 3 games, versus Strome’s ZERO - than Chytil should be getting a shot to center Panarin right now. Or should we wait til his 4th full season? Or 5th when Strome’s contract is up?

Moreover, we’ve drafted two high creativity, high skill kids with the #1/2 pick in back to back years. Give them the damn PP time. They can’t be less productive than Strome or the second unit currently are, and nothing is better for their confidence and “getting their game going” than getting some PP time and maybe a few easy points.

Right now Hughes obviously looks a step or two ahead of Kakko in his development, but Kakko averaged 14:17 per game as a rookie and is averaging 12:04 so far in his sophomore campaign. Hughes averaged 15:52 as a rookie last year and is getting 19:57 a night so far this year. Sure, we’re a bit deeper, but at some point you just have to let the kids f***ing play if you expect them to get going. These aren’t late 1st rounders or 3rd round picks that you HAVE TO integrate slowly with 14 minutes a night. They’re used to playing big minutes and they’re not going to get a significant rhythm going playing 12 minutes a night and getting scolded like a puppy for every single mistake.
