If the decision is to keep Strome at 4.5 million+ for one year or split that money over two guys (like say Granlund and another forward for depth), I don't think it's really even a question on which I choose

That said I'm still of the belief the Rangers are going to get Strome for their arbitration offer. Until proven otherwise I think that's the play.

Granlund + Haula > Strome

It is a major net gain imo for the overall play of this team next year. Plus if it is short term deals, especially 1 year deals, you end up with two assets to sell at the deadline if they are a bubble team. Because with the offensive talent this team has, Granlund and Haula’s numbers could be boosted, even if one of them is in the bottom 6.

Yea I mean many UFAs have fallen on their face, but also at some high cost that makes it unbearable. I think you are going to get some guys on the cheap with it being a low risk depth move. The hope is eventually your young kids displace/push down a Granlund to the 3rd line making you deeper
Of course we all hope that a Chytil can step in. Just not sure that will be on day 1. Based on what I saw last year, there was nothing there to make me believe any different.

And would the $1m differential on a Garnuld really be worth sticking with what you know works?

Panarin's 11 points in 136 minutes with Chytil last year wouldn't lead me to believe that either.

- Strome (he returns getting hardballed to sign his QO at ~3,6 M for 1 year) - KK
LAF - Chytil
- Corey Perry (1 year at ~ 1 M)
Lemmy (2 years at 1,5 M) - Howden - GOAT
Extras: PDG - Colin Wilson (1 year @ 1 M)

Smith/Miller... - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox

Slater Koekkoek (1 year @ 1,2 M ) - ADA

Sufficient cap space to do this - including them ELC bonuses...
Some bargain bin signings - that provide some nice, cheap, veteran depth that can eventually be dumped for some minor returns at TDL
Kravtsov eventually comes over after his KHL season is over and many bonuses are no longer attainable
One of Miller/Smith goes to AHL

Presto

The figure Strome can come back to is the Rangers arbitration bid of $3.6 million, not his qualifying offer.

Im assuming this is all speculation but Corey Perry would be hysterical, my friend absolutely hates him.

I think Wilson says he’s done. Personally, I’d rather take the 3.2M you have allotted to Perry, Wilson and Koekkoek and make a small trade (third and/or minor prospect) for a solid veteran LHD with an expiring contract. Someone like Oleksiak, Nemeth, Benn or Cole/Hjalmarsson (with retention). A veteran D would lessen the load on Trouba for defensive matchups and take some pressure off the young guys behind him, while also helping Shesty adjust to a full season.

fyi - Colin Wilson just wrote a column announcing he's out of hockey due to OCD and substance abuse reasons.

Chytil had excellent numbers when played with actual Top 6 players, mate.
KCB:

53.90% FF
58.72% SF

58.10% SCF
66.67% HDCF
66.67% HDGF

Your Chytil Derangement Syndrome is really showing.
I don't know that we can really narrow down the derangement to Chytil.

I have nothing against Chytil and want for him to succeed. But no matter what fancy stats you show in the small sample that he played top minutes, the kid was not ready for a promotion based on his play. Before he is anointed 2C, he needs to take a pretty large step forward. If he cannot dominate third line opposition, why does he belong in the top-6?

He was though? He's already a better player than Strome both defensively and offensively, and showed he very much belonged in the Top 6 when he was actually given the opportunity to play there.

Beauty must clearly be in the eye of the beholder. Right now, his offensive game lags Strome by a good amount. Like I said, hopefully he can take the next steps. Based on his play last year, he needs to take a pretty significant step in order to be thought of as a second line center.

Clearly we are watching two different players then, is all I can say. Or maybe 4, given whatever it is you clearly see in Strome.

Why are you assuming someone can replicate the success Strome had? It hasn't happened since Panarin entered the league, he even played with kane and never came close, PLD was close but he also had Atkinson on the other side. It would be a silly gamble to let him walk after the season BOTH of them had especially this season especially given they had Fast on the line, adding a scoring threat on that line will open space up and having someone who can finish can only help. Id like to see if all that is true before i let him walk for no good reason a 1 or two year deal gives me time to see that and the 3-500,000 we are talking about won't matter to the build of this team over the next 2 years.
Spoiler: Strome himself is not going to replicate the success that Strome had either.

Do people think Panarin is going to continue scoring at a 120-point pace for the next 3, 2, even 1 year(s)?
