I really think Strome will regret not settling at like 4.2.... he won’t get a lot as a ufa

IMO for a chance at a couple of hundred K's this year he's risking multiple millions on his next contract.

Maybe he's betting on himself to be a 50-60 point player even away from Panarin. I like to quote Marsellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction : "This business is filled to the brim with unrealistic motherf***ers"

Just remember that a player isn’t just worth how many points he scores. The comparison to Mantha doesn’t take into account special teams play, position played, defensive play etc. Does Mantha play on the pk? Is he solid at both ends of the ice? Honest questions because I haven’t seen him play enough.

Defense?
That seems to be a foregone conclusion these days..SMH

Lol @ everyone thinking strome isn't gonna be signed with the Rangers this year. They didn't qualify him until late to try and pressure him to take their deal, he didn't buckle, he still hasn't buckled, they will likely go to arbitration and he will be here for 2 years or less after it. Its pretty straight forward.

And what if he gets a 4.75M award in arbitration?

Maybe. I honestly think it depends on the award. 4.8M for one, maybe. Two? Not sure the Rangers wouldn’t walk away. 4.5 for 2 maybe. Anything above 4.8 even for one, I’m not sure they don’t walk. And the funny thing is, given cap situations and roster needs around the league, I don’t think Strome would even get 4 flat on the open market. He’s going to not buckle, as you say, for about 300-500k extra this year and it’s going to potentially cost him a few millions over the next few, because if he doesn’t play with Panarin this year, he’s likely looking at 45ish points tops and no one will be signing him for 4.5M next summer.

They won't risk messing up next season over 500,000 in cap space they don't need.

What's the difference? They have extra cap space. What happens if they walk away and Panarin's production settles back to where it was before Strome was his center? How did the move look then? I really doubt the rangers will let him walk for 500,000 in cap space we don't need. On a short deal it doesn't matter if he gets 3,4, or even 5, he will be gone in 2 years or less when we need that space.

Why is Granlund taking a pay cut?
Why wouldnt he? Does he have a choice? Are teams banging down his door right now to at least match last year’s salary, which was while being with an underwhelming Nashville team that was mediocre vs expectations? Some, in fact most of the guys remaining, will be taking a pay cut whether they like it or not.

And why are we assuming someone else cant replicate the success Strome has had with Panarin? Panarin is a Hart Tropht candidate. Granlund is no slouch.

$4.5 or more and I am walking away from Strome. You can better spend that money elsewhere and even save some possibly. Strome wouldnt get more than $4.25 on the open market. Maybe not even more than $4 million. Yea $500k is a significant amount of cap space in this unstable economic climate right now. Plus I would rather have that extra space at the trade deadline just in case.

If Panarin’s production settles back to 90 points instead of 105? I think the franchise is fine with not committing to anything 4.6+ beyond this season. If Strome is brought back I’d almost guarantee he’s sold at the deadline or viewed as a self rental but they’ve made it quite clear they don’t want a long term relationship with him. The odds are highly likely Panarin sees a regression this year anyway. Him being an 80-90 point player is expectation. What he did last year was not. If Panarin regresses by 15-20 points and plays with Strome the whole year, Strome likely regresses 10-15 points as well. That puts him right back in one dimensional player with third line stats territory. Panarin is likely coming back to earth as an 85+ point guy anyway.

Points matter not at all.

Why are you assuming someone can replicate the success Strome had? It hasn't happened since Panarin entered the league, he even played with kane and never came close, PLD was close but he also had Atkinson on the other side. It would be a silly gamble to let him walk after the season BOTH of them had especially this season especially given they had Fast on the line, adding a scoring threat on that line will open space up and having someone who can finish can only help. Id like to see if all that is true before i let him walk for no good reason a 1 or two year deal gives me time to see that and the 3-500,000 we are talking about won't matter to the build of this team over the next 2 years.

Yes...a short term relationship... thats what we are talking about. It's silly to discuss it... he's gonna be on this team this season

Why are you ass-u-ming he can replicate? We have lost count of the many, many UFAs that have come to NY and fell on their face.

Yea I mean many UFAs have fallen on their face, but also at some high cost that makes it unbearable. I think you are going to get some guys on the cheap with it being a low risk depth move. The hope is eventually your young kids displace/push down a Granlund to the 3rd line making you deeper
