Eh, if they don't need to move him, I fully agree.

But by the same token, he's a wild card they can play if they want to make trades that bring in more salary than they send out. And with only a year left at $2.35MM real cash owed out of a $4.35MM cap hit, he should be eminently movable, especially in the current environment.

So, I think it's totally dependent on whatever other moves they make.

It's certainly possible, but I would bet against it. Yes, the cash owed is less than his cap hit, but that's true of a lot of players, and money and cap space are both tight around the league. We paid a 2nd to move Staal. I'm not sure we could move Smith without adding a sweetener as well.

I think it's almost a certainty though that we will bring in a LD, either a cheap vet UFA or we trade for one. I can't see the Rangers going into the season with Smith, Lindgren, Hajek, Miller and Reunanen as their only LD options. I can definitely see us trading ADA or Strome in a deal that brings back a LD.

No we don't. Strome, ADA, Lemieux and Georgiev will likely cost about 13 mil, then we've got to add 2 more forwards and 2 more dmen.

Laf will be one of those forwards. His cap hit will be 925k, but he'll have 2.85 mil in performance bonuses, and we have to account for those bonuses under the cap since we will exceed the bonus cushion. Basically, due to bonuses, we can't spend to 81.5 mil, we can only spend to 77.5 mil.

We have enough cap space that we could fit Fast as the 12th forward (Smith would be the lone spare at both F and D), but that's it. If we do re-sign him, we're going to have to be careful about which young players make the team, because a lot of them, like Barron and Kravtsov, have bonuses as well.

JD discussed the Rangers cap situation yesterday.

Don't necessarily expect the Rangers to spend big, though. As Davidson pointed out, they want to save a little wiggle room under the salary cap in anticipation of certain young players triggering performance-based bonuses.

According to the CapFriendly, the maximum bonus payout for the 13 players on the current roster could be as high as $7.2 million — a total that should go up with further additions to the roster. And while the collective bargaining agreement allows for performance bonuses to push a team over the cap by 7.5% without penalty, that only works out to $6.1125 million for an $81.5 million salary cap.

"I think one thing a lot of people don't realize is now you're looking at the Rangers and everybody says, ‘Oh, they’ve got a lot of cap space,’" Davidson said. "When you draft young players, for instance, the No. 1 overall pick, if that person is with us, his bonus structure goes on the cap. So, there's a lot of bonuses from young players, in particular, that also are a part of your numbers when you look at the at the cap number and where you are. ... And the cap’s not only flat this year, but two more years after this. So, these things all had to weigh in."

6 takeaways from call with NY Rangers' John Davidson and Jeff Gorton

The Rangers are playing with a $68.5M cap after the buyout money. They have so many quality young players capable of achieving their performance bonuses. Igor Shesterkin was lights out in his 3 months in the NHL. Pro-rate those numbers over a full season. He will reach some of those bonuses. 10-2 record. 2.52 GAA and .932 Save %. The Rangers season was going nowhere before Shesterkin was called up.

Jeff Gorton said the Rangers are looking to add a veteran D in free agency or in a trade. They don't have much money. The Rangers could add a Nick Holden type for a mid round pick. Holden had two years left at $1,650,000 AAV.

Re-sign your own group II's. Fill out the roster. Leave money for the bonuses. The Rangers are playing with nearly $13M less than the other teams.

JD also brought up the cap being flat for three seasons.

It good to see you posting again. The voice of reason. Poor GAG has been on the front lines by himself for awhile now.

I think most of us would love an ROR type in this situation. That being said, if there simply isn't that player available or teams aren't willing to part with that kind of player for DeAngelo, well, then the market has spoken.

The Rangers clearly see him as the 3RD. They're very high on his near-term substitute in Lundkvist. They have holes elsewhere and seem intent on making changes. At some point you've gotta take action, even if it's not the perfect value you had cooked up in your head. They're not going to give Tony away for something they don't see equal value in. However, that equal value isn't likely to be an elite 2C without any flaws or a premier, shutdown LD on a great contract. They're trading a guy who is incredible at one side of the game and very weak at the other. We should prepare ourselves to get some flawed assets in return. I just JD and Gorton to know what kind of team to put together.

That may be the market now, but markets change.

I don't think ADA is very weak at one side of the game. He is not great in his own end. Trouba is not great in the offensive end or getting out of his own end. I think it was Trouba who turned the puck over at his own blue line just before ADA was turnstiled to end the 3 game playin. Girardi and Staal were bad in the O zone and bad at moving the puck anywhere and the Rangers spent a ton on them while making the playoffs, even the cup finals.

Lundkvist has not played in N America, he looks very promising. He is likely to need some AHL time. If not it's possible we have the same conversation about him as we do with Chyitl. Lias, Howden in terms of whether or not they could have used more AHL time before being placed on the NHL roster.

Rangers have time to make the right moves, just because they made cap space buying out a player and attaching a future to another to trade him does not mean they should use all that up on players who just happen to be on the market.

This is all true and a big reason why salaries and finances are going to play a part in who potentially gets moved.

For example, if you bring in an established second line center (warts and all), you have to move a contract out. You’re not just sending picks and prospects the other way.

If Smith made 1 million a year he'd be a perfect utility player.

He's important for this team next year, like it or not. He's going to be out there killing penalties for us. He's better than any replacement we currently have in Hartford. I'm open to see what Hajek, Rykov, and Reaunanen can do to push for a job in camp but either way I think Smith is the healthy scratch at the very least. Plug him in on the 4th line or 3rd pair as needed.
