At this point, I think teams are waiting other teams out (sort of negotiation game of chicken). Teams let time tick down hope the other team flinches and lowers an asking price.

Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. If we wind up trading a combo of 22/Strome/Buch for a LD , the writing has got to be on the wall for Smith to finish his career in Hartford, where he belongs. That is yet another addition by subtraction in itself.
I still think we're missing a G O O D vet LD. Not too old, but a good player 25-28 who has played playoff hockey and is defensively sound.

I’m surprised there isn’t a taker for Smith. Maybe they like him who knows. He played well enough on the top pairing with Trouba when Skjei was dealt. I thought Trouba played his best hockey with Smith.
only a year left. You’d think there’d be a taker if they wanted to move a guy that plays both sides and actually steps up come playoff time.

Kakko will like Laf more now that all those cameras will move their direction
agreed. I think not only will that help him and he might not even know it but it will fuel him. He’s a quiet kid but everything I’ve read or heard from him says he loves the spotlight loves being THE guy. I think he’s going to want to prove that.

I would think they could find a deal for Smith if desired but they may not mind keeping him around for 1 more year. He’s a good depth option and if none of the kids are ready they’ll be in a bad spot. Maybe if they get their way with trades and UFA that could change

I'm 99.9999999% sure Smith will be on the team this year. He can play both left and right defense, and fill in on the 4th line as well. We will likely only carry one extra player, and he will be it.

Eh, if they don't need to move him, I fully agree.
But by the same token, he's a wild card they can play if they want to make trades that bring in more salary than they send out. And with only a year left at $2.35MM real cash owed out of a $4.35MM cap hit, he should be eminently movable, especially in the current environment.
So, I think it's totally dependent on whatever other moves they make.
this is the right decision. We can not afford to lock in anymore money on veteran wingers with the kids we’ve brought in. Regardless of whether or not they love him. He’s 28 he’s constantly playing thru injury it’s just not the right investment. Have to move on.
Smith can always be sent down if need be so I don't think he's much of a concern at the moment.
