If the Rangers gave Strome a Q.O. and he unexpectedly accepted it, I wonder if that affects potential trade value. Could that be the hold up? If a team trades for him they probably want to be able to sign him for multiple years.
They could negotiate an extension almost immediately. He just would have a low salary in the first year with the team. That isn't it.

I could buy this potentially. Ottawa is so damn cheap

Although I’m not sure why he would be afraid of not being qualified. If that happens he can go straight to UFA, someone will pay him if that happens

Maybe testing how much he wants to be a Ranger/Play with Panarin(or go to OTT). Also if he signs, maybe we get leverage in our rumored deals for a #2 C from CGY/Vegas. Brooks’ tweet makes no sense outside of being a team leak to move things along.

Hm. I thought there was a waiting period before being able to sign an extension after a contract is signed. I must be thinking of something else, or a different scenario.

It doesn't make much sense not to put in the Q.O. It's just a formality at this point since he'd be unlikely to accept it anyhow.

It’s a hunch that Gorton is working on a major acquisition of some type that we haven’t run into the ground.

And it isn’t Byfuglien.

lol was waiting for his name to appear. Guy is huge.

had better not involve Laf

Actually, for a 1-year deal it is normally January 1st. I don't know if that gets pushed back with the season being pushed back.

If that is the case, it would seem to make sense that the Rangers do not want to risk having him sign it. Acquiring teams aren't going to want him to be on a 1 year deal with no ability to extend right away. What if the season gets cancelled prior to being able to extend? Strome would just ride it to UFA status and take best offer.

Strome must be part of a deal or they have a contract agreed on but hasn't been finalized. Why else would you not qualify him?
Or maybe they just didn't officially do it yet and don't have to technically until Tuesday? I'm not saying something isn't afoot, but Occam's razor would lead me to believe the former.

I don’t know what is going on but the Rangers are not amassing all of this cap room to save money for Dolan. Remember a few days ago when I said we’re playing checkers here while Gorton is playing chess? Something is afoot here.

I mean with the potential performance bonuses they don't have an exorbitant amount of cap space. Basically enough to sign their RFAs and maybe sign a cheap FA or two to fill out the roster. They could be planning to roll those over to next season when they have all that dead cap from buyouts coming off the books but that would mean another year with a reduced cap.

btw not sure if this has been mentioned in all the Eichel talk (I tend to black out reading some of the comments lol) but looking at Eichel's contract...he has 2 bonuses thru the contract. 7/1/20 the sabres just paid him a $7.5 mil bonus leaving him with only $2.5 mil salary for this season. so i'd guess that the sabres would need to be blown away by an offer to move him this offseason when they have already paid 75% of his salary for the year (and would get zero credit toward their cap if he's moved)...

then next year he just gets a straight $10 mil salary...then the next key date is 7/1/22. On 7/1/22 he is owed another $7.5 mil bonus AND his NMC kicks in...which btw is also the day Mika and Barkov become a UFA if not extended first.

That is probably when Eichel gets traded if it happens...he'll be in buffalo this year, and then the following year assuming the sabres are still trash, they will potentially trade him at the deadline to avoid paying that bonus and before his NMC kicks in. Maybe next summer cause his value is higher the more years left on his contract. but this year would be a tough sell to management since they already paid him.

Exactly this...think I posted it along the way and I'm sure others have as well. There is almost 0 chance he is traded this offseason due to the bonus payment that already occurred. If league / Buffalo finances are bad this year maybe next offseason. But the real decision point is 7/1/22. I see basically all this talk and chatter as laying the groundwork for that date.

Yeah the strome shit is just weird.

I don't see any way they just walk away from him.
Agreed

They turned a negative asset in Spooner into gold with Strome. He has capital worth as a piece. To not even drop a half assed number to qualify him has to indicate that they dont want to tie up any cap space over the next period on hopes of consummating a deal with a player involved that has a high cap number. Lundqvist and Staal buyouts support that notion.

Yup. And even if Strome would carry a very reasonable cost of $4.5m for a year, other teams would need an incentive to help the Rangers with cap management if such major acquisition happens, as strange as it sounds in vacuum it would be cheaper to simply walk away from Strome’ contract.

99.99% of the topics discussed in this thread don’t happen. If that’s gonna be the criteria going forward then it’s gonna get very quiet around here.
