Talk about non qualifying Strome could be a signal to the league about how available he is. If they are this serious then there have to be other things going on and that involves acquiring a replacement and weaponizing all of this cap space they suddenly have. Very interesting.

This is a good point. If a team like Ottawa is offering something the Rangers could float the idea that they won’t qualify him. That likely means there’s no chance he goes to Ottawa as if he hits UFA he’s not going there.

btw not sure if this has been mentioned in all the Eichel talk (I tend to black out reading some of the comments lol) but looking at Eichel's contract...he has 2 bonuses thru the contract. 7/1/20 the sabres just paid him a $7.5 mil bonus leaving him with only $2.5 mil salary for this season. so i'd guess that the sabres would need to be blown away by an offer to move him this offseason when they have already paid 75% of his salary for the year (and would get zero credit toward their cap if he's moved)...

then next year he just gets a straight $10 mil salary...then the next key date is 7/1/22. On 7/1/22 he is owed another $7.5 mil bonus AND his NMC kicks in...which btw is also the day Mika and Barkov become a UFA if not extended first.

That is probably when Eichel gets traded if it happens...he'll be in buffalo this year, and then the following year assuming the sabres are still trash, they will potentially trade him at the deadline to avoid paying that bonus and before his NMC kicks in. Maybe next summer cause his value is higher the more years left on his contract. but this year would be a tough sell to management since they already paid him.

I've posted this a few times. Buffalo has zero incentive to deal him until next offseason.

I understand the financial implications of Buffalo trading Eichel as they have paid his bonus, but let’s be honest, this isn’t about dollars. If he’s asking out or unhappy then it doesn’t matter. Does the new GM want a bad situation to possibly get worse or get squeezed mid-season if Eichel is not happy? Once the offseason is over, the offers will be worse or require A LOT more creativity as teams will have less space.

Or telegraphing to Strome to temper his expectations ahead of negotiations.

Why are the Sabres trying to trade for Jack Eichel? Not a good look for the new GM if he doesn't even know Eichel already plays for Buffalo.

I doubt the sabres initiated the call if there is any truth...more likely this was the rangers calling after hearing he was available that McKenzie mentioned and the sabres laid out some insane asking price because they aren't looking to move him but if the rangers said yes why not...

it would be like if the sens called asking about the #1 pick and JG said tkachuk, chabot, 3rd overall and 5th overall...you don't expect them to say yes but you also have no plans to trade the pick anyway. so throw it out and see if they are stupid lol

There's really only one incentive to trade Eichel and that's him wanting to be moved. Maybe Adams is willing to go the distance like Sakic did with Duchene, but maybe it's been festering enough that a new GM doesn't want to navigate the waters that were poisoned by the previous front office and he just wants to get rid of the headache. Having your first year at the helm be under a constant speculation of whether or not you're doing enough to keep Jack happy probably won't be much fun.

if he asked to be traded though why wouldn't his agent say that when asked about it?

Well, I was just pointing out the flawed language in the tweet.

I mean we know that the two teams had talked before the Bobby Mac tweets hit the wire. Edge had said as much a few weeks ago and mentioned them as team who had possibly kicked the tires on #1. I'm sure that generated a few hypotheticals that likely didn't go very far. Probably something as simple as "Would you consider moving Eichel? What might that look like?" and Adams throwing some sort of insane request on the table just to put it to bed.

Maybe Eichel's camp caught wind of it somehow and decided to leak it to try and put pressure on the front office because they'd welcome the move to Broadway. I doubt very much that this all got kicked off by the Rangers calling up and asking about Eichel.

Not if he was asked to keep quiet to help move him. If he was promised he'd be moved, but asked the agent and player to keep quiet to not completely ruin leverage, then so long as there's movement they probably listen.

I think the lesson in journalism today is the nuanced difference between "undecided" ambivalent and "has yet to decide" in a TBD way.

There's no way the Rangers allow Strome to become UFA given their cap space regardless of arbitration results. a 50+ point center is valuable. It's just a matter of evaluating their options until the 11th hour. They will decide in favor if Strome or has a deal already with him if they don't make a trade for a center that will somehow displace Strome.

Just trying to be objective and see it from the other side but of course they asked for first overall, Chytil and probably Miller and maybe another roster player
They could be asking for Igor and Kakko/Lundkvist. And they aren't going to deal all in futures. They will ask for roster skaters. ADA and Buchnevich.

But this is a long game. Eichel isn't going anywhere this season with 75% of his salary paid. They are setting their start point before negotiations grind for 9 months as the next signing bonus looms. I would assume we have our starting point set with a less than desirable package.

I am indifferent on an Eichel trade but it's kind of silly how much leverage we have. We are forced to wait by Buffalo until we gain more cap. Colorado gets closer to paying their stars. Ottawa is a division for. LA is the only true threat. Out of conference, cap space, prospects. They don't have the roster players to spare that would appeal to a team invested in making the playoffs quickly.

Not for nothing, but none of these guys were 23. Duchene was 26. Karlsson 28. McDonagh 28. Richards 26. Kessel 27. O'Reilly 27. Nash 28.

I'd hesitate to say that those trades imply anything for an Eichel trade.
Or proven what Eichel has done either. I’m not advocating for or against the trade, but that package it is going to take to acquire him would hurt. Ideally if they had to move him they would prefer to do it out west like they did with ROR. Eichel could also get better. With a guy like Panarin, LaF or Kakko on his wing he could just be scratching the surface. Can he be a 100 pt plus player for NYR?? He is also paid like a number 1 center, that will work against him. Having a no movement clause, that will work against him but the term of him contract is right in the wheel house of his prime. That is a huge plus for him because that is exactly what you would want. A number 1 center signed until he is 30 where the sky is the limit.

LOL Brooksie....
