Laine isn’t necessarily ‘redundant’ in our lineup but to trade top assets to acquire Another top paid winger.. why?

Panarin laf kakko Kreider kravstov.. laine? No, really, thanks.
Kravstov hasn't made any NHL team yet and is on an ELC. Laf and Kakko are both on ELCs and could be on the third line this season, for all we know.

Its just Kreider and Panarin.

Laine improved his other areas of his game this season. He definitely began to assert himself more on the physical side of the game and from the games I saw, was much more evident all over the ice. I wouldn’t say he’s just a one trick pony totally anymore. Granted he’s never going to be Bergeron...

Its just Kreider and Panarin.

Both of whom are locked up long term.

Kakko and Laf will need new contracts in 2 and 3 years respectively.

Laine needs one next year.

Adding him makes zero sense.

rather go after Eichel over Laine
If we’re gonna go after a big name, it should be Eichel or Barkov if he hits FA. Unless the winger is a monster defensively, I don’t think going after another winger is a smart idea. We have enough depth on wing. We need Cs and LHDs. And bottom 6 I guess, but that’s relatively cheap and dime a dozen.

Im not saying it’s at the top of my list but considering they are looking at Monahan, would it not also be an option to load up with someone like Laine and promote Chytil?

Monahan is a center. Him not being good defensively doesn't make it okay for us to spend considerably more assets, and eventually more cap space, on a winger who isn't good defensively.

Keeping Smith to be dealt at the TDL basically solves the bonus issue regarding ELC related overage transfered to next season. That would actually serve a good purpose

Yeah this is something I mentioned before, by dealing a guy or two at the deadline, the team could ‘bank’ that cap space from the deadline until the end of the season for use towards the bonuses. They’ll also have a better idea of who may or may not hit them.

I think the problem people have with Monahan is we were told we needed to fill our deficiencies. A 2C who could take defensive matchups, PK, win faceoffs, etc. and Monahan is not that. Is he an upgrade over Strome? Yes, but people seem to be looking for something that is not available right now like a Sean Couturier type of player. We were also told the Rangers are not looking for a Nylander type, who had previously been the wet dream of the board and Monahan seems to be more of that mold. Are the Rangers "settling" for Monahan because they want to get Hanafin in the package? Maybe, but it seems like the Rangers are saying lets go and get better right now rather than wait for the perfect player who may never be available.

I guess the question is does this have to happen this off-season with Lundkvist signed for the SHL year? I might have missed this but who takes ADA's spot if he does get traded, 1 year stopgap FA?

On the question of penalty killing. Ideally your best penalty killing forwards should be bottom 6 guys. I'm not really crazy about Zibanejad blocking a lot of shots for one thing and rather have him in 5v5 5v4 situations to take advantage of his offensive abilities instead of wearing him down killing penalties. If he continues doing that I'm totally fine with the 2C not doing it.

Any kind of trade of this magnitude is going to open up a hole of some kind. We have what I think if our best defense prospect playing in Lulea now and I think he probably would have signed if it hadn't been for the pandemic but I expect he will make the jump with no problem next year---so what we'd need is a temporary fill on our RD. I don't quite see Monahan and Nylander as all that comparable.

We can’t continue investing at Wing. Panarin and Kreider are both signed longterm for a combined cap hit of over 18M. Buch. Kakko. Lafreniere.

Acquiring a winger is like us targeting a goalie, or RD. It’s not a position of need. If anything, we’re probably going to end up moving Buch within the next year or two if Laf+Kakko start breaking out.

I'm guessing Winnipeg would want something along the lines of DeAngelo, Chytil, and #22 for Laine.

I'd do that if they are interested in DeAngelo. Or maybe deal with Calgary, and then Winnipeg.

DeAngelo/Dal 3rd for Hanifin/Cal 1st
Buch, Kravtsov, Car 1st, Cal 1st for Laine

It might help with the bonuses that are actually paid, but it does nothing to solve the real issue.

I wouldn’t make any hasty decisions based on that series. We were one of the better scoring teams this past season.
I think JD and JG have and will continue to make some decisions based, in part, off our play in that series.

No need for Laine. A team is like a good meal, you need all kinds of ingredients. This team needs grit/leadership/face offs/PK up front, not more finesse.

That said bring back Grabner he helps with the PK and leadership.

It goes beyond the price tag though.

What does he bring that we don't already have? Yes hes an excellent shooter but what else is there in his game? I'll answer - Nothing.

I wouldn't be opposed to adding a winger if it's the right one. For instance, I'd be all over Mark Stone if he became available (he isn't, but just as an example.)

Oh I agree with you 100%....there is almost no scenario that the deal would make sense for us. but I still see no downside to making or accepting a call on any player. maybe the jets express interest in certain players on our roster that can open the door to deals for other players.

yes you can't wait for the perfect 2C candidate cause most likely that guy isn't available and you are only getting him thru the draft...but at the same time that also doesn't mean you need to jump at the first decent guy available. ESPECIALLY if the price is extremely high in terms of assets and the contract isn't that cheap...

there are lots of reasons to like monahan as the 2C and depending on the deal I could get behind it...but we have the luxury of time here. we don't need to rush into a deal. if the right deal isn't there, our worst case scenario is keeping strome so him and panarin can repeat last year while we continue to look for that answer.

JG holds all the cards
Agree with all of this. I'm ok with Monahan but not at the Lindholm price.
