Count me as interested in Laine, why wouldn’t any team be? The question becomes what is he asking for? Laine improves his overall game considerably this last season. He’s a BIG power forward who is 22 and has an absolute cannon of a shot. You’re probably looking at a Dany Heatley type career for him. Should he be THE guy? Probably not. But could he be ONE OF the guys who carry a team? Yep.

Let’s look around, Ovechkin is horrible defensively. So was Heatley. So was Hull. So we’re countless other pure goal scorers. These guys can be fantastic pieces to winning teams, they just need to find the right spot.

If he were okay with $6-7m per season long term I’d consider it. If he wants $9m, then hard pass.

Reactions: Rangers in 7
Laine would be high on my list. They can find two-way players to fill the rest of the lineup elsewhere.

We talk about ponying up for Monahan, who is better offensively than Strome, but doesn't offer anything defensively. I would rather target Laine and worry about center later. I'm more concerned with the center position being defensively responsible. The question is how much is the cost for Laine?

I'm guessing Winnipeg would want something along the lines of DeAngelo, Chytil, and #22 for Laine.

Islanders hid his deficiencies because they more or less trap. He isn’t getting that luxury with the Rangers. I’m staying away.

They wouldn't be leaning on him to eat big minutes though. He'd essentially be coming in as the 6th/7th D. Wouldn't be my top choice, but they could do much worse.

Of course the counter argument to that would be that Smith could do that and I don't really object to that. 1LD is clearly a bigger need but its a harder role to fill.

Yeah. The Rangers have guys that can play that role. They don’t have guys that can play top pair. They need to aim higher.

Rangers can’t allocate that much cap to another wing.
Given that we will have three or four forwards in our top-9 on ELC next season, I think maybe we could. Laine doesn't require a new contract until after our dead space drops from 13 mil down to 4.

If you can get him for the right return, you try to make it work.

He's already making 6.75.

He isn't going to be coming in between 6-7.

Ovechkin is at least multi dimensional. Dude was a wrecking ball during his best days. I don't think he was really ever "horrible" defensively either.

I don't get the idea of trying to make a big splash to improve a strength with one dimensional players. It's going to cost a ton and we're also going to have less space/assets to use to actually fix the areas that need help. Easiest of passes.

tb signed vasilevsky for 8 years, $76 mil ($9.5 mil per) 1 year ago with the contract starting this year...so it might be a little premature to say no team is going to give big $$ to a goalie anymore.

A lot has changed in a year my friend as we all know. The bobrovsky deal is going to scare people the flat cap and uncertainty going forward. You won’t see a contract like that again for a very long time if ever again.

Laine? Oh boy. Might as well bring Lias back and they can be Call of Duty bros. That way the team appointed baby sitter can watch them both at the same time:sarcasm: Seriously though, the team has enough money tied up at the wings, they need center and ld help.

Some of us have a short memory

Laine is going to cost 9 million and if it were for us, you would love it. We will have Laf and Kakko on ELCs and hopefully Chytil can step up as 2C at a very reasonable cap hit too.

Laine is a heck of a player...and no doubt you call to find out the price cause he's that good. But can we really afford another super high priced winger? and I think he mainly plays LW...

I struggle to see a scenario that we could make it work without getting Kreider to waive his NMC to ship him out and also move Buchnevich. certainly would need to move kreider before Kakko and Lafreniere signed their 2nd contracts.

Laine has a 6.75 mil cap hit and will make 7.5 mil in actual dollars next year. He's 22. There is zero chance he takes a deal that pays him an average of 6-7 mil per season. Absolutely none.

It goes beyond the price tag though.

What does he bring that we don't already have? Yes hes an excellent shooter but what else is there in his game? I'll answer - Nothing.

I wouldn't be opposed to adding a winger if it's the right one. For instance, I'd be all over Mark Stone if he became available (he isn't, but just as an example.)

Im not saying it’s at the top of my list but considering they are looking at Monahan, would it not also be an option to load up with someone like Laine and promote Chytil?

For example if the deals were:
ADA + Howden for Laine

Buch for Hanifan

Strome for (2) Ottawa 2nd’s

Panarin-Chytil-Laine
Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Kreider

Again, we’ve thrown everything else at the wall so it’s not a horrible discussion. I’d probably prefer to strengthen the center ice position but if they could back-fill the center ice spot internally or inexpensively its an option.
