Some found footage of Edge this morning:

Would 3x3 be bad for Fast? Maybe a 4th year ? I just don’t want a bunch of 19/20 year olds playing in our bottom 6

There are / will be options in between having only 19/20 year olds and giving Fast 4 years at $3m per.

well thats a different story...LOTS of questions about how many years and how much $$ each is worth vs what they could return in a trade. But Vince said questions about qualifying offers which is simply the minimum offer to retain the players rights as RFAs....with the flat cap there are likely going to be a number of middle of the road guys that don't get qualified because they make too much $$ and will become UFAs. I don't think any of our guys fall into that category.
Well, if you might be trading someone before the QO deadline, that is a related decision, yes? And you can QO someone and later negotiate a longer extension, but maybe they prefer to make the larger offer up front?

While we all drool over the nuggets of info from @Edge , I'd like to re-state how important it is, should the team go with a youth movement, for Gorton to build a competent and consistent 4th line. It may mean overpaying for a guy to play there knowing that the teams 4th line may, at times, play more like a 3rd line if the coach isn't happy with what he is seeing. The problem I am finding is that with the guys they have in house and the guys coming, I see VERY little room for the 2 veterans required more than likely without other pieces moving.

Funny I feel like the devils could really used a good young winger and the rangers could use a good young center...Kakko for Hughes swap? Could never happen....right?

I just dont like Hanifan. Sounds like a slightly better Skjei to me. Which we dont need to go through again.

I am meh on the Lindholm vs Monahan discussion. I much prefer Lindholm. Better contract, better defensive player.

Depends on what we would be giving up I guess.
I also prefer Lindholm to Monahan, and dont think Hanifin is the answer to 1LD. Given that these talks are centered around ADA, our expectation should be higher.

So some people want patience, but also don't want young players in the bottom six. Isn't that where they get experience? And no vet contracts, well except for former Rangers. How about JG just makes the team better. Is it a crime if things come together and they win a round this season? If the right guys are available why not take advantage of other team's cap or cash issues? Why shut down shop and sit on their hands for a year?

I don't see anyone saying that they don't want young players in the bottom 6...some young players belong in the bottom 6 and will be there long term not just till they are ready to move up. But you also need a balance of kids and veterans...its more than just getting ice time. having 3 kids together who don't know what they are doing yet isn't necessarily good for any of them. sometimes its better to have 1 or 2 kids on a line with a guy like Fast where they can learn from him. need to find the right mix/balance

I would be OK with 3X3. And I would do that with the assumption and and agreement that he will be in the bottom six sooner rather than later.

I do have to wonder if Fast could get more money/years somewhere else if he hits the open market.

I'm pretty open for a 3 year on Fast that ends when we need to pay Laf following his ELC. It saves us from doing something stupider if that falls off the books at the same time. I know it won't cover all of it, but it make sure some of that money can come from somewhere...

Please no to Hanifan.

Only entertain him if its part of the price to get a Center from Calgary

Said it before that I can see how people would have trepidation regarding Hanafin. That being said, he's locked up on a pretty decent contract and still has a lot of upside. We're all here raving about DeAngelo taking a huge step this season and Tony is 15 months older than Hanafin is. If you get Hanafin and he hits his potential, you have a top pairing locked up for 4 years for under $13m as your much of your elite talent is still on ELCs. Could be an absolutely massive win if it works out.

If he doesn't work, he's not going to kill you financially and he's at least an upgrade over Staal and can insulate the LD until the kids are ready to take over. Hardly unmovable if he gets outplayed.

You haven't read all the posts. I'm sure someone said exactly that earlier today.

Three years are definitely more palatable than four but in the current situation it’s quite likely there would be equally good options for under $3m.

These are fair points.

But on the flip side, if he continues to be underwhelming as he has been then we are looking at essentially a $5 mil AAV cap hit on the books through 2025-2026. Preventing us from being flexible

That's like 12 million in salary added- would have to get creative to fit all that even if ADA is in the return.

Snuck an edit in there on you but it's not an unmanageable contract. I think Hanafin, for all of his warts, is a decent 2nd pairing defender right now. That's an upgrade on what we have and even if he's the same guy in 2 years that he is now, you could probably find a taker for him pretty easily.
