Well AA sucks too lirl. I don’t know, all this cap space makes me think re-signing Fast is a possibility.
I feel like it would’ve been done by now if we were gonna keep him.

I mean we traded Staal like four days ago. Free agency is in a week.

It's usually not how GM calls work. Unless you are picking up from a previous conversation, typically one GM will ask the other what could we do to improve each others teams? Of course, you are prepared with names to ask about and certainly in conversation you might ask if you have any interest in moving player X, but typically you talk needs first and then names get brought into the conversation.

Keep in mind that this is a new dance for Kevyn Adams so lots of GMs are probably calling him to probe and learn what he has in mind. Given his assets, I'd expect he has talked to every GM in the league.
Thank you. Even though I am ignorant when it comes to the way professional sports teams front offices conduct business it just seemed odd from an outsider the way the story was unfolding from McKenzie to Fish to the media.

I mean even then I don't love it. If you look at the last few deals that involved top-10 picks for NHL players they're as follows:

1. Stepan and Raanta for #7 and TDA. Stepan was a pretty good top-six center who had some term but was hardly an elite talent. Raanta had starter potential but was unproven.
2. Jordan Staal for Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumolin, and #8
3. Schneider for #9

These picks don't get traded that often and when they do they rarely return the high-end talent people expect them to. There's a premium on proven players that fans don't seem to pay attention to.

This...Would you rather have a 7th round pick or Hank in his prime, a 6th round pick or Hagelin, a 3rd round pick or Buch/Duclair?

Proven players are almost always going to have more value than a prospect or a draft pick.

I’m not sure an all offense no defense type of guy like Athanasiou is what we need but I do like him. I’d warn everyone in advance that that guy has some of the absolute worst hands around despite his incredible speed
So....Carl Hagelin?

I figure no deals involving the kids until we know exactly what we have in them like Chytil-Barron-Kravtsov for starters . That 22nd could be the next Pastrnak who was a 25th in his draft year !!! A one year wait won't hurt us that much.

That's another angle I would agree with. Our farm system is pretty stocked. At this point, the foundation is in place and it is time to shore up more immediate NHL roster needs. The window is starting to open, if not next season then the following one for sure. That doesn't mean we start trading our picks away for veterans at the deadline like we did in the past, but focusing on more targeted asset management. RD is so deep that we've got a 24 year old, 60 point defenseman on the 3rd pairing who is going to end up at $5m+ AAV, and we also have a top 5 defensive prospect in the league who is right handed. Let's be smart and not move ADA for more picks, but address areas of weakness like center or LD.

Totally agree. Like I said, they've certainly gotten lucky with landing Kakko and #1 but other than that, Gorton put them in a position where young, high end talent is now a luxury rather than a necessity. Now is time to start letting these kids realize their potential while the focus shifts to supplementing that potential with NHL talent. And asset management is arguably more crucial right now than it was 2 years ago/will be 2 years from now.

While I agree with your premise, I think the better word for a trade like that would be redundant. Sure, picking 1 and 6 would do wonders for a prospect pool in a vacuum. But the obsession with subtracting NHL level talent for the promise of tomorrow is becoming a little outdated for the Rangers. They're as stacked as any team in the league when it comes to high potential prospects. Would it be nice to have more? Yes, of course...but moving a player like ADA for that "luxury" would only further set them back.

Gorton has done a masterful job (with a fair bit of luck) at planning for tomorrow over the last 2.5 years. It's time to start planning for today, IMO...
I must disagree with this
We have many Stars
Stars get highly paid
The only way we keep most of them is to have many good players on their ELC
The more prospects vying for those spots the better chance of having good players playing for us while on their ELC
Plus we still need a Center with first line potential in our system
