I’m not sure an all offense no defense type of guy like Athanasiou is what we need but I do like him. I’d warn everyone in advance that that guy has some of the absolute worst hands around despite his incredible speed

I think ADA for 6th would be dumb. If I'm picking 6th overall I'd be ecstatic if the selection developed into a player of Tony's caliber. Because he's about to be making $5m on the 3rd pairing, the Rangers definitely should be exploring their options. But any deal ought to be a hockey trade to address areas of need on the NHL roster.

While I agree with your premise, I think the better word for a trade like that would be redundant. Sure, picking 1 and 6 would do wonders for a prospect pool in a vacuum. But the obsession with subtracting NHL level talent for the promise of tomorrow is becoming a little outdated for the Rangers. They're as stacked as any team in the league when it comes to high potential prospects. Would it be nice to have more? Yes, of course...but moving a player like ADA for that "luxury" would only further set them back.

Gorton has done a masterful job (with a fair bit of luck) at planning for tomorrow over the last 2.5 years. It's time to start planning for today, IMO...

28 year old Lecavlier is not even close to 27 year old Zib or 29 year old Panarin. These are elite guys and like I said earlier one is getting better every season and the other has a game where he should be elite well into his 30s.
Hopefully they age as well as MSL, Prospal, Malone, yet even if Tampa did not win a Cup until just now with Stamkos.

That's another angle I would agree with. Our farm system is pretty stocked. At this point, the foundation is in place and it is time to shore up more immediate NHL roster needs. The window is starting to open, if not next season then the following one for sure. That doesn't mean we start trading our picks away for veterans at the deadline like we did in the past, but focusing on more targeted asset management. RD is so deep that we've got a 24 year old, 60 point defenseman on the 3rd pairing who is going to end up at $5m+ AAV, and we also have a top 5 defensive prospect in the league who is right handed. Let's be smart and not move ADA for more picks, but address areas of weakness like center or LD.

Here is my question to the HF members who work or have worked for a professional sports team.
In Bob McKenzie’s first post on Jack Eichel he said he was making his calls and heard that Jack wanted out. Then he spoke with Eichel agent Peter Fish and Fish claimed there was no truth to the rumors. Then it was reported that it wasn’t Eichel or Buffalo but rather other teams G.M.s calling Kevyn Adams inquiring about the availability of Jack.
Is that normal that a G.M. call unsolicited to ask about another teams franchise player?
Are teams calling Edmonton and Toronto and asking if McDavid or Austin Matthews are available?
Just seems odd.
It's usually not how GM calls work. Unless you are picking up from a previous conversation, typically one GM will ask the other what could we do to improve each others teams? Of course, you are prepared with names to ask about and certainly in conversation you might ask if you have any interest in moving player X, but typically you talk needs first and then names get brought into the conversation.

Keep in mind that this is a new dance for Kevyn Adams so lots of GMs are probably calling him to probe and learn what he has in mind. Given his assets, I'd expect he has talked to every GM in the league.

We could use his speed. He’s pretty similar to Grabner IMO. Type of guy who can pop in 20-30 as a complimentary player.
Different manager. Different play style. Don’t know if he has that kind of role carved out.

I mean even then I don't love it. If you look at the last few deals that involved top-10 picks for NHL players they're as follows:

1. Stepan and Raanta for #7 and TDA. Stepan was a pretty good top-six center who had some term but was hardly an elite talent. Raanta had starter potential but was unproven.
2. Jordan Staal for Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumolin, and #8
3. Schneider for #9

These picks don't get traded that often and when they do they rarely return the high-end talent people expect them to. There's a premium on proven players that fans don't seem to pay attention to.

Draft class changes every year. 2017 saw a huge drop in perceived talent at like 7.

7 in 2020 is like 4 most years year, they say.

So you would trade Lias Andersson and a 2nd for ADA?

Any player that gets Norris votes is going to have high value

and most teams would take the chance of locking up a player of his talent long term
Look at our roster and assume a steady improvement by a few key kids .....Tony will be a PPG guy next season . That is 80 + points if he remains injury free . A steady improvement by Fox-Chytil-Kakko-Laf is going to increase our offensive numbers and Tony's as well . Plus....the chance is always there that with Martin in the fold that his defense will improve and also playing without Staal . I think Gorton knows this and knows what he has in hand and there is a lot of team propaganda to drive down his asking price on a new deal with this trade talk . No doubt in my mind that Tony wants to be a Ranger....and who wouldn't right now ??? He is here for this year unless he prices himself off the club or the Rangers get an offer that is overwhelming . 3 on 3 he is money in the bank !!!

Our speed and goal scoring is pretty f***in good as is.
I think we’re a little slower than we’ve been in the past. Like our best players aren’t the greatest skaters. Panarin is very agile and Zibanejad is powerful but their speed isn’t elite. Same with Kakko and even Laf.

we have Kreider and that’s about it up front for elite speed.

Not very interested in Hamphus Lindholm because of his contract situation. If he was signed for 4 more years I would be much more enthused by the idea.

Howden, Lemieux, and Fast all get in the corners really quick. It’s not just about footspeed either, DeAngelo and Fox can move the puck up the ice like lightning.
