Take Alexis, unless its Brady +3 +5. Been sometime since we had an alpha star (#11). I trust JD.

Edit: I'd love to hear @Edge thought's on JD. I love the guy, maybe it's just growing up with Bill Chadwick and JD, but the guy bleeds our colors.

Just looking through some available d-men... and this is an out-there thought... but what about signing Big Buff to solidify the top 2 pairs? Real big body, obviously good on scoring, but also could help mentor some of the kids - or at least protect them.
Winnipeg was a shit-show last season, so i don't think him sitting out was a character flaw. Obviously it would be contingent on him being in shape, but it might not be a bad 1 or 2 year deal.

I'd be shocked if Buff looks to come back to the NHL. And if he does, I doubt he'd want to play in NYC.

Also, and not to be mean but lets be honest, the dude is probably over 300lbs at this point with this year off.

I dont think there is a fit for Big Buff here even if we move ADA and have a spot on the 3rd pair. And even if he is willing to sign on the cheap.

Here is my question to the HF members who work or have worked for a professional sports team.
In Bob McKenzie’s first post on Jack Eichel he said he was making his calls and heard that Jack wanted out. Then he spoke with Eichel agent Peter Fish and Fish claimed there was no truth to the rumors. Then it was reported that it wasn’t Eichel or Buffalo but rather other teams G.M.s calling Kevyn Adams inquiring about the availability of Jack.
Is that normal that a G.M. call unsolicited to ask about another teams franchise player?
Are teams calling Edmonton and Toronto and asking if McDavid or Austin Matthews are available?
Just seems odd.

Before the Staal trade most of the roster building focus seemed to be On which of our RFAs we could we resign and what to do with the players we couldn’t retain.

After the Staal trade we have options galore. Cap space lets us breathe a bit.

You wrote a lot of text here that's based on what I think is a faulty premise, which is that the best chance for the Rangers to win the Cup will *only* come after the 25+ players are gone or ineffective. The Rangers have a strong chance to win the Cup is going to come while the current 25+ and the 25- group are *both* capable of major contributions. That moment is coming up very quickly, and specifically, we're probably talking about 21-22 to 24-25. In other words, starting the year after next.

What having the under 25 group be strong does is create a situation where those years won't be the only chance we have. The team will stay competitive and in contention after the 25+ guys are done being effective.

Obviously, this is all assuming that the youth doesn't flame out, which isn't guaranteed. We're in it now, so you have to operate as if they won't.

I don't think I was implying that our chance will only come when the 25+ group is ineffective; but I was saying that I do not think those four at their current prime ages are enough until the under 22 group matures, and given that many of them are actually 20 and 19, its gonna be a minute.

I'll double down on the assertion that I think by time this team would be ready to actually compete for a Cup on the level of a team like the Lightning or Bruins in a 7 game series, it will be after Kreider/Zibanejad/Trouba have exited their primes. Panarin, who knows, the guy is a legend, could be great till he's 35.... which is why giving him that money was so smart. He's gonna produce throughout almost all if not the entire contract.

Anyway, what happens when Zibanejad's effectiveness is reduced, perhaps when he's at 30-31 years old in a few years? Kakko and Lafreniere will be 23-24 and really just beginning their dominance. Are we putting all the eggs in the Chytil basket? I suppose if we've traded for a guy like Lindholm he'll still be just 29, but....

I think a center for these guys is way more critical for us long term because you are solidifying their ENTIRE window, not just the end of Panarin and Zibanejad's.

If you can do both, great, but that's why I said, why not sign a guy like Erik Haula or Joe Thornton or someone, AND trade assets for a prospect top-6 center who is 20 or under?

I'm just not a huge fan of parlaying the assets into a center who doesn't get us over the hump now (Eichel might; Lindholm I don't think does), but also doesn't accentuate the young core. I'd rather use those assets to secure the Kakko/Lafreniere core's future first, and then with what space I have left, strengthen the team for a run now.

I'm not the right person to answer your question in that I've never worked for a team before. But my guess is, as a blanket answer, no it probably doesn't happen that often. I do think, however, in certain circumstances where there's enough friction between a player and an organization that it causes a bit of smoke...teams are going to smell it. In those instances it never hurts to at least make a phone call. The worst thing that happens is you get a "no thanks" on the other end.
