I don’t think the Rangers are looking to dump DeAngelo, but, I think they are definitely listening, and move him if they get the right deal.

I think the right deal is fixing a roster hole in another spot now with a legitimate NHLer, not just a hyped prospect or something. Like I don't think they'r elooking to deal him for a high pick or something. They don't need to trade him, they can sign him and look to move him later if they want to

e: and even though they're deep at RD, if you trade DeAngelo now you actually do have a bit of a "hole" in the lineup there until Lundkvist comes over in another year and you never know if he'll jump into the lineup, or need time, or how he'll perform, etc.

They may be willing to plug in a short term placeholder until Lundkvist is ready to join the lineup. We’re likely already seeing that approach on LD. If you’re not having to worry about signing your RFAs, you can gamble that there could be some bargains in the upcoming off-season. More than anything, Gorton has given himself a great deal of flexibility. If the Rangers see Sanderson as a potential 1D, and could come away with that AND Lafreniere, I think, as @Edge likes to speculate, that would qualify as one of those OMIGOD drafts that set this franchise in a position to dominate the next decade.

You've got the shot at some tremendous talent at 6. No doubt about that. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around how dealing a guy like DeAngelo for futures fits into the plan.

I have a hard time understanding the disconnect.

If, as reported, the Rangers are in love with Lundkvist, then he's in and DeAngelo is out. DeAngelo therefore must be traded rather than allowed to walk.

What's hard to see about a fit with a future top 6 center that we could probably get at 6?

Not trying to be a smart ass, but while you can certainly argue that getting a young top 6 center currently in the NHL is better, I fail to comprehend the violent opposition some have to getting another top 10 pick in a draft that is flat-out stacked. We are in the middle of a rebuild. The rebuild isn't over yet despite how much some want to compete tomorrow because Panarin is here.

Everyone loves the idea of Lafreniere and wouldn't trade him for the world despite the fact that he is, by definition, a "future." He's never set foot on NHL ice, it's just that we all feel very, very, very confident that he's an NHL superstar.

Obviously there is a wide gulf between him and a prospect like Lundell or Rossi but this isn't a 2017 draft where 6 or 7 is a toss up like Lias Anderson. This is a 2019 draft where 8 or 9 is still Trevor Zegras and the surefire gem of your prospect pool. You are allowed to say "This guy here at 6 is not the same gamble as a guy at 22. The guy we are getting at 6 is reasonably certain to pan out more in line with how Lafreniere is reasonably certain to pan out, rather than how certain we feel than Lapierre pans out at 22."

The problem is that the Rangers are better suited to getting players that fit both now and the future. In other words, someone of a similar age to DeAngelo, or slightly younger, who is of similar caliber and plays a position of current need. That's LD or C. Future assets are nice, but only somewhat fit what we're trying to do at the moment.

Repeat after me... top 6 forward, top 4 Dman, quality prospect and a 1st round pick.

Buchnevich, DeAngelo, Chytil ?? if the Rangers added Chytil who is a NHL regular, 1st in 2021 instead of 22th overall this year be fair???

2 1st round picks in a deep draft
A potential top 6 center
Blue chip prospect

if u don’t think that gets it done than your high as a f***ing kite.

this isn’t McDavid we are talking about

If there's one thing I've learned about HFboards over the years its this. Yes, every fanbase inflates the value of their team's players. But that is hugely amplified when the fanbase in question has placed most of it's hope in said player turning around franchise. We've certainly been in this position. Imagine someone asking to trade for HANK in 2007. Sabres have more great young assets than we did back then (Dahlin, Cozens, Oloffson, Reinhardt). But Eichel is at the top of that list and I don't blame them for wanting the moon ++++. I would too. I think the only way they can sell trading Eichel is if you start seeing reports, and many of them, that he wants out.

I'd be really mad if they did that.

I like the player, but thats way too high.

I think it's a little too high but not way too high.

I see Lundell as a low end 1C, and relatively safe to boot. Kinda in the Ryan O'Reilly to Derek Stepan range.

I'm not advocating, I think I might roll the dice on Rossi there, but the Rangers are a team that likes their guys and takes who they want, damn the reaction. And Edge has said they like Lundell.

And there’s likely no deal to be made unless Eichel forces his way out.

I'm just genuinely curious, what do you think it would require in all honesty?
I'm not sure I have an answer to that.

Buffalo would need to sell this deal to their fanbase. So I would guess they would start by asking for guys like Zibanejad, Fox or Lafraniere to be included in a package. Now, I am not suggesting the Rangers should do that. At all. For a number of reasons.

Personally, if Buffalo was interested. I would seriously have to consider Chytil, Kakko and #22.

I’m pretty sure he’s also said Sanderson could very well be in their top 5, and that Lundell isn’t.

Well, for starters, the draft might be stacked but is sure as hell isn't stacked with centers. So I'm not sure where you're getting the notion that there's some premium top-six center prospect sitting at 6. Like I said in another post, you're either betting huge on Lundell or gambling that Rossi actually stays at center as a pro. Otherwise the BPA available at 6 is likely a defensemen or a winger. So sure, your suggestion is fine in theory but it doesn't really apply.

DeAngelo can't "walk" so I'm not sure where you're getting that from. He's a RFA and right now the Rangers can protect him in expansion so there's no issue with losing him for nothing.

You answered your own question about futures. There's a very, very big difference between Lafreniere and just your run of the mill futures. There's a very, very wide gap between Lafreneire and #6 in this draft. Could you get a great player at 6? Absolutely. However, surrendering a great player to maybe get a great player is a huge, huge gamble no matter how you try to spin it.

Cozens and 8 I can get behind. 6 and a good prospect? Sure. DeAngelo for a pick straight across? No thank you.

Yes. Go look at these deals historically. That gets it done.

well, it gets it done if Buffalo decides Eichel has to be moved. It gets it done as a general framework of a package, perhaps not the specifics

In general it's highly unlikely that dealing someone like Eichel gets the actual value in return. Teams just aren't going to give up crazy huge amounts of players and picks and prospects

e: and again with DeAngelo, I doubt they trade him just for picks or picks and prospects. If they move him it's to fill holes in the roster now and it's because it was too good of a deal to pass up.
