Here's the thing. I'd trade DeAngelo to Calgary for a package around Lindholm if Calgary adds significantly. I don't know what I'd want additionally, though. Kylington? Meh. Hanafin does nothing for me. He's a slightly better Brady Skjei. Sam Bennett? Would they cough up Valimaki given his recent knee injury?

DeAngelo
22nd overall

Lindholm
Bennett
Valimaki

Solves all of this team's problems in just about one go. Strome and Georgiev are dealt to recoup the picks lost in this deal and the Fox trade to continue to add to the pool.

So the NYR paid a 2nd to save ~$3.6M in buyout cap hit this year and ~$1.1m the following?

Relatively fine w that in a vacuum but if the money goes toward giving Fast or worse, Martin a bad contract feels a bit like treading water in the near term and same ol’ problems long term.

All depends on how Gorton uses the space.

No trust in Gorton / JD? IMO even if Fast is resigned it would be independent from how this cap space is allocated.

If TB wins the Cup, it should put a lot of that to bed. They won’t be looking for how to reach The Next Level, will be more about asset management and cap compliance over time.

Yeah. When looking at their cap something has to give, but guess they will pay a small price to get rid of Tyler Johnson rather then trade a young good player to us.

I really like how the board is speculating all kinds of things and then we get these curveball deals like Skjei and Staal.
Granted Staal had to waive his NTC/NMC, so we stopped anticipating such a move, maybe like 1% of the board presented such proposals.

We turned

Staal + Skjei + 2021 2nd

into

ca. 11m in cap space, two roster spots (specially valuable with Staal gone), a 2020 1st and "future considerations".

This is magic imo!

I fully expect an ADA bridge deal and Strome deal with no extra clauses (sick and tired of them). Both of them have to cost us no more than 10m in cap space.

Fast is out to FA 100%?

The two-and-a-half-headed-goalie-monster still has to be solved.
Would love an ADA bridge. Gives him a chance to show that this season was not a fluke and then when the bridge is up we should have a better picture of our cap going forward , even if he ends up costing more money, we’ll at least know he’s worth the money.

I appreciate this..

Does this ultimately mean, trade ADA, Strome, and Buch? For either futures or for guys on 4+ year deals) which Elias is currently on?

@bobbop, @RangerBoy, @Edge, @Mikos87, how about this approach:::::::

Give me what you want, versus what you’ll think we’ll see for the next 2 seasons.

I think most of the fanbase would love to see and hear your thoughts.
Here’s what I expect...

The Rangers will be very conservative with money and contracts. They will not go long term with Strome and probably won’t go long term (4+) with DeAngelo. Lemieux will get squeezed. Fast will be resigned. Now that they have some cap maneuverability, they won’t want to give it all away tomorrow.

They will investigate trading Georgiev if the price is right. San Jose and Chicago seem like likely candidates to me.

The Rangers will sort through the free agent market and look for reasonable help for left defense and the bottom six.

And trades will be investigated. The Rangers will only trade for players that can be part of the core. Extra points for reasonable contracts. Lindholm, Hanifin, Krebs, Glass would all fit that model. Very tough to predict trades but I can’t imagine that Gorton doesn’t have at least one fairly important deal in his near future.

The Rangers are in a good position. They have a boatload of assets. The major renovation pillars are in place.

This is the fun part of the rebuild.

I can’t say that connection has come up. But who knows where those talks could go.

Carolina was originally a conversation about Georgiev that morphed into deals involving Skjei and Keane.

I wonder if there has been communication with Arizona? I'm hoping Dvorak or Chychrun are in play

And obviously the Rangers would need more than trio if they were to make an offer for Lindholm and Hanifin. As board it’s been speculated ADA could be floated there.

I asked some people if a bigger deal with Calgary was possible. The response was essentially that it might be too big of a deal, but that the interest in Lindholm was very high from the Rangers.

I think a smaller deal creates necessity for further deals for both parties while bigger deal is more complicated and therefore more difficult to put together to be considered fair by all.

Let me just say I like lindholm but to trade DeAngelo for him would be a vast overpayment on our part.

@Edge any sense of what Calgary is targeting in a trade with NYR?

If they are trading Gaudreau I could actually understanding why they'd want Buch. But that would make a trade with us contingent on a the Gaudreau return.

I get why a team would be interested in ADA. But the rumors around the Flames are about re-tooling to be more of a playoff-sturdy group. Does ADA fit into that? I feel like you trade for ADA if you need an offensive D. PPQB. But not sure you do it if you're trying to be more robust in the playoffs.

Lindholm and Hanifan are the names that the Rangers have asked about, according to @Edge. He also threw out a potential to swap 1sts, (obviously not 1OA).

Thanks! But I'm curious about the other way. What does CAL want from us?

Isn't that the way this usually goes down? Many anticipate like 7-8m/y, which I find comical.

I find that the Marner and Matthews contracts may have messed up the way people value contract and the classic salary progression of ELC, bridge, albatross.

There's zero chance Tony gets anywhere near 7/8 million a year for his next deal

None

And if DeAngelo for Lindholm is the framework for a deal, I think Calgary adds slightly, but I don't think it's something earth shattering. Maybe they add a 2nd or something. Tony's true value is tough to pin down but I think whoever they trade him for will not be equal value in some peoples eyes.

That's just the way it goes

Yeah, I can't remember the last time a free agent was top-3 in Hart voting the following summer

the last 40 years, 7 players have been hart finalist in their 1st year with a new team...the other 6 were all acquired via trade. so it was prior to 1980 if it happened.

I know that this money saved will most likely be used to sign Tony D, provide a cushion for a probable Henrik buyout dead cap, and fill out around the edges, but I can’t help the feeling that the Rangers want to bring in someone with some salary in a big role. I’m here for all of it.

I don't think its really far off.

Lindholm's contract is fantastic.
I'm admittedly biased, and don't want to trade ADA, so that plays into it. However while Lindholm is a good player on a good contract I think he's being overrated on here and there's no guarantee he's going to be the center a lot of people seem to think he is. It would make sense if you can get him for Buch because of the cost controlled contract I guess or for a package of picks and prospects. Other than that I'd look elsewhere.
