Strome had a lot more experience. You are comparing apples to oranges.

I don't really consider "experience being bad" a good thing.

Would you have wanted Sam Bennett, Jay Beagle, Adam Lowry, Devin Shore, Austin Czarnik, or Cody Eakin centering Panarin going into last year? Those guys all scored at similar rates to Strome in the years prior.

There was no evidence Strome would work with Panarin based on his previous years. They tried it and it happened to work. Just as there is no evidence Chytil will work with Panarin. But you can try it and expect it will work based on Panarin's history.

If they keep Strome for one year only, that buys time for them to see what Chytil does while not blocking him further.

If by that point Chytil does not succeeded in becoming the 2c, maybe it's time to look beyond both Strome and Chytil as the 2c?

100%.

Strome for another year is the safe play and perhaps the right one. Anything beyond that would be pushing it unless you're banking on him being selected in expansion.

Well if the idea that a team that picked 2nd last draft and is picking first in this one isn't likely to win a Cup in the the next too seasons is far-fetched, I'm not really sure what to say about that. Regardless, there is a plan. The plan is to build a team that will be a consistent contender. Right now, their building that team. And the way to do that is to put young players in situations where they can develop properly — meaning not being asked to do too much.

Everyone is so quick to throw young kids in to the lineup as an easy, quick to solution that is tricky and takes time. How many people penciled Andersson in to the lineup every season? How many people thought Kakko was a lock for 25+ goals? How many people had Kravtsov in the lineup last year?

This franchise (and most franchises, really) has been most successful with younger players/integrating prospects into to the lineup when: they don't rush them, that is make them break down the door and fore their way on to the team. And then earn their ice time and move up in the roster — it's what Kreider, Staal, Callahan, Girardi, McDonaugh, et al did.

That's reason why you retain a Strome so you're not forcing Chytil to do more than he's capable of, right now. And that is the plan.

But Chytil IS there, and looks very close (when he's played with decent wingers). In a Capless world, we could sign everyone and then bury them when Chytil breaks the door down. But if we have to choose between Strome, Buch, and ADA? I'm picking ADA and Buch over Strome every day and twice on Sunday. Strome's offense just isn't good enough to justify his complete lack of defensive effort. If they can make it work, then I'm not opposed to it (either way, Chytil should get some better wingers this year), but I'm just not sure the math works with the flat cap.

Believe me, Ottawa heard from the league today. Anyone else who tries to buy a player out before Tuesday will also. Focus on the Finals. Same as the World Series.

If the league did not want teams to buy out players during the Final they could have simply not permitted teams to buy out players during the final when discussing the return to play...

Anyone interested in trading Buch ideally for LD and then taking a flier on Bobby Ryan to fill his spot?
If Buch is going I hope it is for a solid LD. Not sure Booby Ryan is worth it at this point. They can find someone else to play those minutes, like the guy tearing it up in Russia or the big kid we acquired at the deadline.

why though? if they have made the decision wouldn't it be best for him to do it early so he has a chance to find a new dance partner if he choses? I'm not playing the henke is more important than the franchise game, but JD did say they would handle this properly. If they are going to buy him out, waiting for the 2nd window or very late in the game could hurt his chances of finding a solid opportunity next year

I can't imagine that the Rangers are stopping Hank and his camp from talking to other teams about options right now, even though it's technically forbidden to talk contracts at this point they can at least gauge interest. So buying him out right now doesn't put anyone in a more advantageous position. That being said, you're right that waiting until the 2nd window might be unfair to Hank as he'll be removed from the initial rush on goalies. So in that sense it's probably likely he's bought out before the draft.

Nope. Just some rumors that both sides would prefer something short term.

1 year would be a win-win.

normally the buyout window is a the later of a set date and 48 hours after the end of the finals so there is no overlap. this year it was the earlier of 9/25 and the end of the finals. My assumption is that the cba requires the buyout period to be 2 weeks, so it had to open today for free agency to open on 10/9.

of course at the same time, with the season not starting until dec/jan, they could have pushed back free agency a week.

Maybe I’m a Petry fan but I think that’s a fair deal for montreal. 6 million plus only 4 years. Petry is 32 but from watching him didn’t really show his age.

It is a risk, the one thing Petry has going for him is that he's a late bloomer. Less wear and tear on the engine. and chassis.

His contract starts a year from now though.

It's a bit of a risk tbh.
I can see both ways but I’ve watched a lot of Petry and I’m even shocked he’s 32. He plays like he’s in his late 20’s. I mean who knows if his play drops off a Cliff? Maybe MB should have traded him at the tdl when his worth was pretty high?
Having said all that it works with the timeline they have for price and Weber. Right or wrong they are trying to build quickly and stay competitive in the twilight years for their two “best” players. I hope it just leads them to continue being an average team.

He’ll be 37 in year 4 with a NMC making over 6 mill.
I know I might get shit for this but he’s not far off from being as good as Trouba. Petry has had two really tremendous years in a row. One of the few bright spots in Montreal. Yes on paper The only thing that looks bad is it ends when he’s 37 but like i said he doesn’t play like he’s on the decline. If it was more than 4 years I would say not good

It will.

They won't win anything during the Weber/Price era.

I would bet that as well. They are in it to win it with those guys. Better them than us.
They should have traded Petry and Tatar for multiple firsts and few prospects
