I'd be a little surprised if there was no trade market for him.
I thought so too, but reports have been that there will be a decent amount of guys not qualified this year. If he does, bet he comes cheaper via trade than UFA

I've read earlier in the spring/summer the Houston Rockets owner Tillman Fertitia's wealth has taken a big hit due to the pandemic (owns hotels, restaurants, casinos, amusement parks; all of which have been hit hard in the last 6 months; if there is another lockdown due to a spike in COVID19 cases, that'll be another big financial hit); questions s to what he might do with the basketball team; i.e. cut costs. Not sure how much interest he'd have in buying an NHL team at this point..
He used to be a client. Filthy rich ($4 Billion range) Yes, he has taken a hit but he is also using situation to pick up more real estate. Shrewd businessman and a really nice guy (if you aren't negotiating with him)

Honestly the last 24 hours make me think Minny might actually be interested in Strome.

I mean their center group now includes Kunin/JEE, Bjugstad, Rask, and apparently Guerin sees Johansson as a center as well. That might be the worst group in the league by a considerable margin.

I wonder if this is the beginning of a major shakeup there. New GM, franchise needs a major shakeup... identify who is a long-term piece and get rid of anyone who isn’t regardless of “a good deal” or not, so long as it doesn’t lock them into any major commitments.

Oh.. also, Joel Edmundson is a pretty similar caliber player to Brendan Smith 3 years ago. Same age. Same term... $850k less. Signs are that prices will be cheaper this year.

Apparently LeBrun said on TSN Radio that there was a rumor flying around for a while that if Staal ever got traded that he might just retire. That would at least make some sense because Buffalo is really just trading for salary relief in that case.

Could be, but that's not how the Buffalo GM is describing the deal.

Could be smoke, I suppose...

Eichel obviously wanted him.
This seems to me to be the most accurate take to be honest.

Likely not something like Eichel just handing a list of players to management, but the team (i.e. front office and particularly Eichel) want players that they think can push them to a more immediate competitive window. In the same vein, they want to ship out players that they think are inhibiting that. Johannsen had 9 points in his last 24 games of the season. Johannsen was averaging 17:09 TOI for the year, but he had more than 15:50 only once in his final 11 games (of a 60 game season). He was on the outs.

We all knew the writing on the wall that Eichel seems largely fed up and Buffalo needs to make the playoffs next year or it might get bad there. So, I think we start seeing gradually more desperate moves there.

Not sure the Rangers could do much there though. Maybe Georgiev, but not likely.

Someone to keep an eye on going to Minny would be Lemieux imo

Just something interesting to watch though.

Yeah it seems like that would be an odd situation. Here's the interview:
https://post.futurimedia.com/ckstam/playlist/listen-26864.html

About 3 minutes in he says "One of the things in the past that was a veiled rumor / threat with Staal was 'If you trade me I might retire'." Says right away he doesn't think it'll happen and that the connection to Adams will help (teammates in Carolina). Also says Staal was totally surprised by the deal.
