I really do not understand why Lundqvist would retire prior to being bought out when he can just wait a couple of weeks and collect 3M with no extra work on his part.
The reports are consistent but they dont add up.

Catching up a few loose ends from the last thread...

Houston almost got the Coyotes two years ago. They have a building, a very wealthy owner (Tillman Fertitia) and a large market. Houston also has some very good hockey history as well as a built in rivalry within Dallas.

re: Lundqvist, I have heard the retirement talk from a couple of my hockey friends but I didn’t post it as fact because it sounded more like educated conjecture to me. I do think there is something going on here and I am sure Don Meehan (his agent) has looked around to see who might have interest, if there is none, I do expect he will retire. Which would tremendously change the dynamic of the Rangers off season..

re: Trading or keeping Georgiev, keep this in mind...if the Rangers trade Georgiev and sign a veteran backup (Cam Talbot ) they could offer that backup a two year contract and an expansion protection spot. That might be a lot more attractive than taking a one year deal somewhere or a two year deal where they could not be protected.

I've read earlier in the spring/summer the Houston Rockets owner Tillman Fertitia's wealth has taken a big hit due to the pandemic (owns hotels, restaurants, casinos, amusement parks; all of which have been hit hard in the last 6 months; if there is another lockdown due to a spike in COVID19 cases, that'll be another big financial hit); questions s to what he might do with the basketball team; i.e. cut costs. Not sure how much interest he'd have in buying an NHL team at this point..

They’re poised to extend their run as the Minnesota Mild.

He has made over $100m in his playing career. Is it that far fetched to believe he might value ending his legacy as a Ranger on a more harmonious note than the $3m? He will net far more than that as an executive with the team over the rest of his professional career.

I'm pretty sure it's not about money at this point. If there's anything delaying this decision it's a.) if the Rangers haven't 100% decided which direction they're going to go and b.) the thought of never having won a Cup becoming a bit more permanent. It can't be easy for him.

Straight up deal.

I don't get the thinking.

Yeah I don't quite understand this one from the Minnesota side of things. At least Buffalo got a better player while also cutting salary. The Wild, however, downgrade while paying more and now have exactly zero centers on their roster who scored at a pace greater than .5 PPG last year.

I believe the Rangers have probably decided he won't be on the roster next season. The ball is in Hank's court now. Everyone is disappointed he never won a cup, but he's not winning one next season with the Rangers, I don't think any other team is interested nor do I think Hank is interested playing anywhere else. Hopefully the team is being upfront with him. It's between a buyout or retirement.
