Shitty post. Dave Diehl is a great guy. He was my brothers roommate at Illinois when my bro got a full ride. He even stayed at his house for Christmas and thanksgiving when my mom didn’t have the money for a plane ticket to come home for the holidays. Dave didn’t want my bro to be alone in dorms for holidays by himself and my bro and a couple guys stayed with him because his house wasn’t to far away near Chicago. Dave’s father had passed away and he was also going thru a divorce. It was a rough stretch for him for a couple years. Not saying he didn’t like to party lol but I’ve met him 5-6 times and he is a great guy. My bro still goes out to dinner with him Brandon Moore and a couple other guys from his Illini days that also didn’t go to the NFL like my bro. But Dave is a gentleman. Just a lil background

It was meant as a joke. I love Diehl. I know a few people who were with him that day during the Croatia game and said he was awesome.

Not throwing shade to him at all, just a joke.

what if a multiple cheaper options are out there?

as far as “retain 50%” are you thinking that’s 50% of a one year or two year deal? One year retaining 50% of what’s left come the deadline isn’t much while 50% beyond one year is dead money.
I mean there probably are cheaper options out there but not sure the Rangers want the uncertainty that comes with that. With Strome there is some sense of familiarity.

And I think they'll only sign him for 1 year. 5 x 1.Very similar to what they did with Hayes.

Have a hard time believing they want to commit any longer to him with cap uncertainty. Strome retained to 2.5 million at the deadline is worth something decent if he can put up 50 points again

one year would be fantastic. Not that it matters too much unless the Rangers added a higher salary going forward but come the deadline it’s 50% of whatever is left for the year. Right?

Yes and with how banking cap space works during the season and the contract structure, whoever would acquire him the cap hit would probably be less than 2.5 million

This thread is about as off the rails as I've ever seen.

It's amazing how much uncertainty I feel about the upcoming off-season. I feel like generally I have a pretty good handle on prices, both in trades and in free agency. I have no idea what to expect this time around. It's both exciting and low-key stressful.

for perhaps the first time, our Rangers are in a position they don’t have to do anything. There is no urgency a window is closing. They have to wait for kids to develop while adding on the Top pick in the draft. Meanwhile, out of all teams in the league they are the most likely to be ok during a pandemic (no prosper, but be ok).

The beauty part is the Rangers don’t really have to do anything but let the market come to them, essentially. I have a lot of faith in JG not to rush or shoehorn in something weird.

What are the odds that someone like Khoderenko surprises in camp?

Not impossible but I also don't think the team is heading into the new season viewing him at the top of the list of options. He along with Barron and others will challenge for spots but we can't assume they'll make it.

I think odds are decent that one of the 4 college guys makes the team (Barron, Khodorenko, Richards, and Rueschhoff - probably in that order).

He very well could.

I think the Rangers are looking to generate competition for thos bottom six roles and that means Koderenko, Barron and Richards are expected to push people.

And this begs the question, based on who is still here, where would they even play?

Panarin-Strome-Kaako
Kreider-Zib-Buch
Lafreniere-Chytil-Gauthier
Lemieux-Howden-______

Maybe 4th line wing? That assumes no UFA is brought in. Seems a tad crowded

If one of those guys is outperforming Gauthier, Lemieux, or Howden then where's the issue with one of them being out of the lineup?

Some might say that shoehorning is what he did last summer. But the 1OA really gives them much more flexibility with their forward group to just wait and see what comes along. Still think they need to find a quality stopgap left D

I think anything on the fourth line is up for grabs to be honest with you. Frankly, I don't know if I'd consider Gauthier as a given either.

Barron is going to have an edge based on skill and versatility. I think they full expect him to push both Lemieux and Howden. And again, don't rule out those two as trade chips this offseason.

Khodorenko is also in the mix for many of the same reasons.

I think Richards could get on the coaching staff's radar, but I think expectations for him are a bit more modest. Ditto for Rueschhoff. They're darkhorses though and I wouldn't rule them out.

My only issue with competition that dense is that I am not sure I trust DQ to properly identify who wins and who loses those battles.
