I’d be happy with Fast but I think he’ll be too expensive. Ideally, Kreider goes to RW and they can find a veteran or two to help fill roles. Honestly, I bet that Nosek and trading for Reaves would cost almost the same total cap hit as what Fast receives.

Has Kreider played on the right at the NHL level?

I know we liked him for a while and that it’s not only based on a limited viewing, but I just want to raise a little finger of caution regarding Elias Lindholm and that is that he was one of the players that skated hard the the entire pause and it showed a lot when play resumed.

Doesn't that show solid work ethic? Or where you trying to get a different point across?

Agreed. Now, Danault would be someone I’d consider trading for.

Yeah. This has been mentioned a lot. I like the player, but not the contract situation as he is one year before UFA. I wouldn't trade for him without knowing I can lock him up long term, and I wouldn't lock him up long term before finding out if he is a good fit or works out on this team. A long term deal also carries him well into his 30s. It's just too risky at this stage for the Rangers. I have to pass. They need a C that has a 3 or 4 year term so they can more easily pivot in a reasonable time frame if needed.

I just think he looked like someone on the brink of being like a top 30 forward in the NHL for Calgary in the POs. He isn’t quite ‘that’ good.

His stats over the last two years, pre-pause were:

27-51-78 in 81 GP
29-25-54 in 70 GP

With very solid FO and advanced stats.

He'd be an outstanding acquisition.

If you look at teams like Minnesota and Anaheim, etc who needed to make deals, they just couldn’t find reliable trade partners that were worth it. So they paid Vegas to take certain players. That’s been proven to not be a good route

oh sorry I misunderstood, I thought you meant that teams weren't allowed to make trades. you meant that they were unable to find deals.

I’m still interested in a veteran 3rd or 4th line forward from somewhere. Someone who can fill a role for a few years if possible.

that is probably something that you look at after the rest of the cap situation is sorted out...depending on other moves, adding a vet to upgrade the bottom 6 might need to wait another year when more $$ comes off the books. but if the cap space is there I think the rangers definitely would like to do this starting with keeping fast and dropping him to the 3rd line

Also, Gorton is still building so even if he opens up a hole at RW to fill center, that may not mean he’s done even if he can’t solve it by game 1. Kaako and Kravtsov are probably #2 and #3 prospects (if you consider Kaako still a prospect) and both play RW. Along with Gauthier, Lemieux(who can play RW) and Barron(who can play either wing). So long term the organization has depth at that position. It’s similar to RD going in to last year honestly where they had ADA who was not yet proven, Fox coming out of school and Lundqvist and Keane. They proceeded to move Pionk and bring in Trouba

True but I think the one thing to keep in mind is that insulating factor. My biggest worry about a rebuild was that the team would rush kids into spots too quickly. Fortunately they've been pretty good when it comes to making sure there are at least one or two veteran players ahead in the lineup to make sure the young guys are able to ease-in to being a pro. To your point, they brought in Trouba and he was vital in making sure DeAngelo and Fox weren't forced to play above their head. They're keeping Smith and Staal around for that purpose on LD. Strome has been that guy in the middle. Panarin and Kreider on the left wing as well.

The spot where they seem to have the thinnest barrier is on the right-side. If Fast is gone that means Buch is the only RW we have to provide that insulation. So while it's not a dire situation if the Rangers can't address it for game 1, I think they would rather not go into the off-season with Kakko as their #1 RW and Kravstov as their #2. That might mean moving Kreider to the right. It might mean signing Granlund. It could mean moving Strome to the RW. Regardless of the plan of attack, I think any deal that involves Buch going out has a Plan A, B, and C to address the hole he would leave. All of those plans involving some sort of NHL stop-gap who has more than 60 games to his credit.

I think we're reading too much into the whole LW/RW positioning in 2020. Hockey these days is more fluid. Players are more dynamic. They don't stick to one side. When you look at Lafreniere, Panarin, Kakko, Kravtsov, you see them attack the zone from the left and the right, or straight down the middle. Aside from where to line up for the face off, it doesn't matter much in today's NHL. Not as much as it did 10-20 years ago

Vegas would do that deal in 2 seconds. They have nothing of note on the right side puck mover wise. Theodore is not a PP QB. His playoff offensive output is a complete fluke much like McDonagh's was. They need a PP QB in the worst way and their lack of offense on the PP is really showing up vs Dallas now. It's much harder to get a PP righty QB than a Tuch. Rangers have no need for Tuch now that they will draft Lafrenierre and added Kakko last year. Holden and Martinez are 33. They have one righty d man and he has virtually no puck moving skills. What Vegas wants means nothing. It's what they need. Nobody is going to take Stastny or Marchessault. Stastny is 34 and makes 6.5 for 2 more years. Marchessault is small, 29 and makes 5 million over the next 5 years. Vegas is stuck with them or has to buy them out. Nobody will be doing Vegas any favors.

Plus if you look at their farm they have Glass who is a big center prospect and Krebs coming in a couple. They have nothing on the farm of note d wise. Especially right handed d. Guy the Rangers should try to get is Glass. I'd gladly give up DeAngelo and Chytil to get him. I don't know if they would bite on that. They might be able to steal him. I think with the hype he got that Vegas expected him to produce more in his debut. So maybe that offer would be enough to get them to give him up. DeAngelo would fit that team like a glove. They built that team to win now with their moves for Stone and Pacioretty.

So much to dissect with your ramblings...

Let's start with your assertion that nobody would want Stasny or Marchessault.... First of all Stasny has one year left on his deal, not 2. He's overpaid, but not unmovable. Hell there was talk on this board of the Rangers kicking the tires on him as a placeholder. You might not think so, but Marchessault would draw interest around the league. He's a 50+ point winger on a reasonable contract, who plays physical for his size. Might not be a huge return, but again he's not untrade-able.

You're correct the Knights are extremely weak at RD & they don't have a offensive capable defensman in their system. DeAngelo would be absolutely be a great add for the them, but that doesn't mean they'd be willing to part with Tuch to get him. Even if the Rangers weren't stacked on the wing, I assure you Tuch wouldn't be heading to NY.

The Knights would probably trade one of Glass or Krebs for ADA & Chytil, but salary would have to come back to the Rangers since the Knights are basically capped out & trying to retain Lehner. I don't think the Rangers would make that deal, however.

Finally, since you brought it up...Theodore's playoff output is no fluke. The guy is a rising star who is having a breakout season. He may not be ADA on the PP, but he's twice the player ADA is defensively. VGKs problems on the PP is a scheme issue, not a Theodore issue.

I don’t know Tony personally but based on what I do know of him publicly, I think he’ll be just fine wherever he ends up as long as he gets paid

And I feel like Strome is a guy Torts would despise

Danault+16 for DeAngelo+22
I have long been a proponent of the fact that ADA needs to be monetized over the next 12 months – and I like Danault – but I'd hope Tony could fetch significantly more than that. He's the better, more impactful player, the younger player, and an RFA vs. UFA in 1 year. Jumping 6 spots in this draft doesn't make up that difference, IMO.

When I have time I'll go through and assess some of these proposals you guys are cooking up.
