BUF will be an interesting team, with 10 open NHL slots, they are going to be the NHL's most rag tag team ever. Actually wishing them a run next year. With Kevyn Adams as the GM, I think this is the year to let Jack pick some free agents for them.

They have 4 NHL forwards signed for next year, and two of them are Okposo who can barely play, and Skinner who is chilling again.

I recall a couple of Minny fans throwing out their #1, a prospect, and Brodin in 2016 for Stepan and people trashing it. Meanwhile I was licking my chops at the idea of picking up Brodin and McAvoy in one trade.

Oh, for anyone raising an eyebrow at that, I checked the google machine for a receipt: Speculation: - Offseason Thread: Officially Offseason
;)

It took them a year longer to embrace what I thought they should do in that thread.

Maybe not this coming year, but certainly the next ones, we need to bring in veterans that have won cups to lead the core and young players. The leadership and knowledge is an invaluable part of the growing and development of a winning team.

Not a lot of Shanahans in today's league. I've thought about Jeff Carter as a stopgap 2C

The timing of the nhls flat cap is a real advantage for us. The Rangers are sitting on the best prospect system in hockey and in 1 year a lot of cap flexibility. This will provide a ton of leverage. I’m of the opinion that the Rangers hold steadfast for one year, see what they have in lhd prospects and target a specific player or two like Barkov or lindrum next year. I can personally live with watching a borderline playoff team in which the youth are evaluated for one more year.
Not to rain on the parade, but there is absolutely no way that they will be able to afford to sign a Barkov.

- Said literally nobody ever. Your first problem is bestowing the dime a dozen 90s enforcer moniker on RR when anyone who actually watches hockey sees how much he impacts the game when he's on the ice. Richards (an undrafted defensive specialist) and Gettinger (a perennial 4A player who will never sniff the bottom-6 again) over Reavo??? Thanks for the laughs man.
Are you that Buchdaddy guy?

looking back at that thread is wild...it feels like several life times ago. so much has changed since then its mind blowing.

Yeah, and it’s basically not a one time thing either.

All I can say is, keep flexibility. Commit to younger players that can be moved.

Seriously, isn’t it much better to overpay for a younger player without full NMCs for 7 years than to take a stab at a vet that will be here until 2029 and never can be traded?

A concept that seems ridiculously obvious to me yet still seems to be a minority position. It’s hard to ever have good contracts if you are signing everyone at 27. You can get out of a Skjei contract...you can’t get out of a Shattenkirk.

Might not be the worst play considering you gain 2 years younger, but risky to try to thread that needle.
But think of the absolute haul Zibanejad would bring back in trade. They could set themselves up with a long run of contending for the cup

Would anyone trade Trouba for Brodin before their clauses kick in?

yep, why i've argued for longer contracts for our younger guys. it's those FA contracts that come back to haunt teams.
