The problem with that is that you need the second deal be set before you do the first. I do not see Gorton (and who knows, I am not Gorton nor do I play him on tv) subtracting such a piece from the starting roster without bringing back that will help the starting line up immediately. Subtracting a defenseman who was 5th in scoring out of all defensemen is a significant hole on the starting roster. Gorton will not hamstring the team for a prolong period of time like that.

Ideally, yes, but that's probably still easier than trading player for player.

I was trying to find trades with comparable players to DeAngelo, and now I'm left wondering why in the world Jay Bouwmeester was traded for so little at age 24.

florida couldn't get him to agree to a contract extension and he was going to be a UFA

If DeAngelo gets moved I don't think it's a guarantee that anything else happens aside from a likely FA signing on RD. Can't say the same for Strome or Buchnevich though. If you move one of those two you have to make a follow up or else you're forced to rely on some really young players to step up rather quickly.

1. Florida bad
2. He had only had one year on left his on contract (was set to be UFA) and he had a reputation as a soft player

Reeves sucks. The game has evolved to the point where idiots like him are no longer needed. I mean do you really want that scrub on your 4th line or do you want a 4th line of

Lemieux-Richards-Gettinger

or something like that. I'd rather go with that and try to develop 2 young grinders than put a 33 year old schmuck out there.

Why have one old scrub on your fourth line when you can have TWO young scrubs on your fourth line

To me that just makes it that much more difficult and probably unrealistic. To have the second deal in place before you have a first and to have commitment is not easy.

Just as well, I'm not interested in acquiring expensive LDs. Our RD lineup will be expensive enough and I want to let our organic prospect depth at LD play out before I commit assets to fixing that position.

I think any team who had any good young players and is looking to add picks/prospects is probably rebuilding, or they have financial issues. In either case they'd likely be keeping their good young players as those are the best to keep for their rebuild or they are least likely to have big cap hits, and if they have some who happen to be young, good and also have a big cap hit, how do the Rangers fit them in anyway?
Honestly, not sure of what you are getting at. My response was that I did not think that structuring a deal by being dependent on another deal is very realistic. I hardly think that DeAngelo is untouchable (very, very few are) but what he produced is rare. Very rare. If a team wants to deal for such a young, dynamic ice tilter, they are going to have to give. A lot. Which probably means that both teams will need to have the cap space as well as the personnel.

He was also kind of a disappointment at that point I feel like? He never turned into that big number offensive defenseman that people expected and he was/is soft on the back end.

As for DeAngelo I guess you can look at what's going on with Gotisbehere and worry a bit about giving him a huge contract now. Basically Ghost has disappointed somewhat recently, fighting through injuries, misuse, down seasons, and now has been passed in the depth chart and is probably gonna get traded.

Id trade for brodin at 6x7

yeah but the only reason the wild would even think about moving him aside from a huge over-payment or pure stupidity is if he was refusing to sign an extension. now that he is signed for the next 8 years (1 year left on current deal, then 7 on the new deal) he isn't going anywhere.

Huh, guess Dumba is on the outs in Minnesota

Not terribly broken up about Brodin re-signing, he was always going to cost a pretty penny to trade for/sign to a new deal
