1. Fair question, but the simple answer is, I just think that he would be. He is behind Hedman and McDonagh in Tampa but I just see someone who now is ready to step up and play on a first pair. Log a lot of minutes if needed.
2. The biggest advantage with him is that we are not going to commit to any NTC/NMC (they are not allowed during his RFA years) for his next FOUR seasons. We need a top LD now. Will we want to pay for someone (that we select today) in 2/4/6 years? I am far from convinced of it. My biggest concern is getting locked up with NMCs/NTCs huge parts of the 2020s that we regret, not making marginally bad moves.
3. I am of the stance that dealing a 1st round pick with any thing more than a couple of months left of a season is really really risky, no matter if it’s unprotected or not (if you end up sucking the first year, what is there to say that you won’t suck the second?). So I of course think your point there is really strong. I’ve thought of it and my best reply would be to quote Slats about the mice/lions thing.
