You like Strome that much huh? In all seriousness are you comfortable handing a big time contract to Zib in 2 years? If so I guess I see where you are coming from. But the Eichel move is a now move as well as hedging on Zibanejad.
But this team sucks now and the move does nothing to make them not suck.

We were 5th in goals scored. Eichel is bad defensively.

If this was for a LHD in the same situation as Eichel, I'd be in a completely different mindset.

It's not a bad thing.

Neither would acquiring McDavid, Crosby, Hedman, and an re-animated Jean Beliveau be bad things.

You have to plan for the real world.

I think we are doing that. This isn’t likely but if it’s possible, there are trade packages we can submit that probably trump any package another team could reasonably come up with, even without gutting our core or including Kakko or Lafreniere.

I think that is kinda the relevant discussion at hand here.

As for “costing,” us Zibanejad, that argument kinda just reeks of player favoritism. It insures us against Zibanejad injury or aging, is what it does. If Zibanejad isn’t willing to sign a reasonable contract at 29, it helps hedge against that too. If he does want to be back here, then we will be able to afford him by somehow moving out Trouba or Kreider most likely.

5th in scoring, so room for improvement. He's also not that bad defensively, is he selke caliber no.

He is acceptable.

I'm sorry, but I think all of this is just a fantasy. Eichel isn't coming here with Buffalo retaining, players were signed north of 10M/season when the cap was LOWER than it is now (at an all time high FWIW) and Zibanejad will get 10M+ if he's scoring at the pace that he did this year.

I just don't see it. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
They don’t spend to cap, and they aren’t close to their window. Why wouldn’t they retain 2 million if it meant a better return?

I with Machinehead on a trade for Eichel.
The Rangers organization is a victim of their own success.
You can’t offer Shesterkin, Fox, Zibanejad or the 1OA and even though we have very good to great pieces excluding those players and Alexis Lafrenière to package together for Eichel the Buffalo G.M. will most likely see what he can’t have in the exchange. Add to that, Kevyn Adams is a Rookie G.M. and needs to prove his worth to his organization and fan base.

Also there's no discernible difference in improving a strength compared to improving a weakness. It's generally better to improve weaknesses just because it is easier to do so but if a team, for example, scores 3.0 GF/GP and allows 2.9 GA/GP whether you get better by adding 0.2 GF/GP or by decreasing 0.2 GA/GP the net result is the same.

Exactly. All that matters is improving goal differential.

I’m just waiting for someone to come full circle back to Stamkos to NYR rumors from years ago based on the premise that the team was able to win a Cup without him and needs to cut salary.

See: Oilers, Edmonton, circa 1985.

If this were true, the Rangers may be THE ONLY team in the NHL that could make that work financially.

the aren’t taking an ADA. They want all those prospects i mentioned being you propose not parting with the best.

With a flat cap the Rangers have a very, very pricey roster with little depth
