In a fantasy world where Eichel publicly asks out of Buffalo, no other teams are willing to give up an uber premiere piece, and we have our cap properly constructed... getting Eichel for a package that consists of future 1st round picks and players not named Laf, Kakko, Fox, Shesty, Zib, Panarin, would be amazing and of course would be a no brainer.

But all we are doing is just adding unsupported facts at this point.

Substracting any of those 6 aforementioned pieces to acquire Eichel would likely just be lateral at best.

If Zibanejad has seasons similar to last year moving forward then he's making more than Eichel when he hits UFA status. Agree that keeping both will likely be impossible.

Eichel is a heck of a hockey player but he's not a fit here.
Eichel got 10 million from Buffalo.

Buffalo may retain to move him here.

No one playing for a competitive team is going to get 10 million if the cap remains where it is.

Players will still value playing for competitive teams.

Zibanejad could sign for less than 10 million.

But this move would leave us with -no exaggeration- an AHL LHD corps and no flexibility at all to address that.

We were already 5th in the NHL in scoring this past year, that's not what stopping us. And Eichel is ass defensively.

It just doesn't, in any way, fit what this team needs.

Voicing concerns over fit, lack of need, cost to acquire, what it would do to our depth, etc. are all fair to bring up in terms of whether or not we should make the trade.

But what you've also been doing here is severely downplaying or choosing to ignore the obvious value that having Jack Eichel on your team adds to the Rangers. A 24 year old, arguably top 5-10 center talent in the league, that is entering his prime and controllable under contract for the next 6-7 years.

Im confused by what you’re saying. That’s what it would take? I doubt it’s those three prospects assuming DeAngelo is the centerpiece. But let’s just use your hypothetical:

trade ADA for picks/prospects
Trade Strome for picks/prospects
Trade Georgiev for picks

The Rangers still have:
Lafreniere
Kaako
Fox
Shesty
Gauthier
Howden
Lemieux
Lindgren
Barron
Jones
Wall
Andersson
Chytil
Plus the picks and prospects they just got back for the three guys above.

Oh and a 24 year old 1C

Why would they want ADA??? Buffalo is a financial mess along with more than a few with Covid. Buffalo wants inexpensive and talented kids. You’ve already proposed keeping the Rangers best so Buffalo is going to want the others.

Rangers should have picked one or two out of Panarin, Trouba, Kreider.

All three adds up to ~26M ( almost 1/3rd of cap ceiling) and that makes it difficult for them to add in a 10M cap hit and still ice a good team beyond.

I don't like to say it but in this case I kind of think the Rangers made their bed in committing to those contracts and when I speak of them remaining flexible with their cap space going forward, this is the type of possible situation that may come up as to why I think they should do so.

Breaking news: Rangers should not have given Kreider that contract. Should have traded him for a haul at last deadline.

As I said earlier, every team in the league wants a Jack Eichel but that comes at a price. We're not in any position right now where we need to pay that price. We're fine doing what we're doing.

If we were like right there and making a move to go over the top, I could see it. I cannot stress enough how far we are from that. Our hot finish to the regular season (which was basically just Zibanejad, let's be real) sanitized how bad this team still is. We got clowned in the play-in by a team that hadn't beaten us since they were the f***in Whalers so that should tell you how ready we are.

Now is the time to exercise patience. This is the easiest off-season of all-time. You walk up to the podium, you say hi to mom, and you say "Alexis Lafreniere." Boom. Done. Ingenuous. Hire Machinehead.

I would love to know the ask from buffalo. Eichel would be a great piece to add depending on the price but don’t forget I think barkov is just as disgruntled at watching the playoffs from his couch in his prime. He is also a UFA in 2 years and would only cost cap. Probably around 10 as well. A lot can happen in 2 years. Chytil could emerge as a stud, rangers mite just as well rather pay barkov then zibby. Who knows. Zibby might also love it here and take a team friendly deal. Who knows.

Buffalo has 33 million in cap space, before they hypothetically move Eichel's 10.

Buffalo will not retain money.

He has 6 years left on his deal. It's really tough to swallow any amount for that long.

I'm sorry, but I think all of this is just a fantasy. Eichel isn't coming here with Buffalo retaining, players were signed north of 10M/season when the cap was LOWER than it is now (at an all time high FWIW) and Zibanejad will get 10M+ if he's scoring at the pace that he did this year.

I just don't see it. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

eichel is so good that 10m is a good contract. buffalo will not retain money on a hypothetical deal unless they were paid a premium asset to do so. u move money to afford eichel at 10m and not think twice about it.

This really just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The money doesn't make sense, the position doesn't make sense, the style of the player doesn't make sense, the handedness doesn't make sense. It's a moderate improvement on the #1 center we already have.

It's just a big splash. I thought we were trying to get away from that.

I don’t think you are using much sense to consider it, then.

If the price could be something along the lines of Chytil, Strome/Buch, ADA, and #22 overall, it’s a great deal for the Rangers.

You said the cost will be more; you don’t know that. There is no recent comp on a player of this caliber but many comps on star player trades the last ten, twenty years are way less than what I proposed there. Nash for Dubi, Anisimov, Erixon and a first. Hall for Larsson. Seguin’s package was underwhelming too.

Probably not 10M for Kakko.
Maybe not, but even if we used Barkov at ~8% of the cap, = 6.5M

Panarin 11.6
Laf 10
Ech 10
Trouba 8
Kreider 6.5
Kakko 6.5

~52M on 6 players where the cap may not be all that much higher than it is now.

Fox, Shesty, whoever else anyone wants to put in the long term, plus three year plan.

I just don't see how it works unless someone from the first 6 players goes and it's not likely to be one of the ones who has clauses.

And, I would think that Gorton would likely move on if Buffalo insisted the names you suggested.

Yeah, if Eichel has asked out and the Sabres are okay NOT including the following players:
Lafreniere
Kaako
Fox
Shesty

Then it’s game on and I’m finding a way to make this work. Eichel is a 24 year old #1 center signed long term. If that means in 2 years you’re forced to bridge a guy like Kaako or Shesty or Fox in order to make it work in the short term fine. Or when the tile comes you look to trade a guy like Trouba or Kreider once their NMC’s expire. This is years down the road.

I don’t think people understand, Eichel is just as good as Panarin offensively. And he plays center. Players like this don’t become available often.

This.

For those who say it doesn’t work financially, why not show how it doesn’t?

It doesn't. It most likely means Zibby goes in two years. But then you still have Eichel who is younger, better, and more durable as of now.
Right, so we're moving a ton of assets to upgrade a spot in the lineup where we're already in pretty good shape. Exactly my point.

Hopefully if it comes to that, you dump Kreider.

The lengths some go to try to paint acquiring Eichel as a bad thing is quite humorous.
It's not a bad thing.

Neither would acquiring McDavid, Crosby, Hedman, and an re-animated Jean Beliveau be bad things.

You have to plan for the real world.

You like Strome that much huh? In all seriousness are you comfortable handing a big time contract to Zib in 2 years? If so I guess I see where you are coming from. But the Eichel move is a now move as well as hedging on Zibanejad.
