Is that what you're insinuating the added value of Eichel is to this team?
Yes because at even strength, he's really not that much better than Zibanejad.

Plus he's twice the cost right now and bad defensively, both of which go hard against our needs.

We have tangible information that Eichel is unhappy with the direction of the team. That's been rumored for a long time now. Then today McKenzie tweets out that he heard some rumblings that Eichel may have asked for a trade but that at "face value" Eichel's camp and the Sabres shot it down. We know the Rangers talked with Buffalo about a number of things thanks to Edge and McKenzie confirmed that today as well.

This entire conversation is built on the premise that Eichel did ask for a trade and that the Rangers are one of only a few teams in the league who have the assets to make an offer and the resources and cap space to absorb his contract. If that's not actually the case then there's no reason for the Sabres to trade Eichel at all, let alone at a discount.

Don't know about that one.

This really just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The money doesn't make sense, the position doesn't make sense, the style of the player doesn't make sense, the handedness doesn't make sense. It's a moderate improvement on the #1 center we already have.

It's just a big splash. I thought we were trying to get away from that.

Holy shit, man. They both need new contracts and probably come in around $8-10m in total. If you don't need to sign them you can apply it to Eichel.
We should be using that money to address desperate needs. This team still sucks.

I mean, I think it makes sense if you want a 1C that you don't need to worry about age or a new contract for another 6 years, but I also think if he's getting traded it's not going to be until next season at the earliest

You also just got $5.7 million in space from dumping Staal.
I think we should be keeping that flexibility. This team isn't making a serious run for another year or two.

Just about everyone but Kreider and Trouba will be up for a raise by the time this team is thinking about winning anything.

That doesn't even cover a quarter of Eichel's hit.
we spent 4m on deangelo and strome this past season. how much is eichels cap hit? besides that, the expectation of deangelo and stromes cap hits will be at least 7m next year (if they get 1 year deals) and much more if they were to get long term deal.s

I get the concern about the making the trade in general, or balking at the price it would take to acquire him. But to think that adding a player like Eichel to your team and that's all you're getting is kind of ridiculous.

We're not just adding Eichel. We're adding Eichel and losing the center we already have. The net improvement ends up not being that great.

you want to make a commitment to Zibanejad for 7 years at 10M per when he's 29 and has had concussion problems in the past? Braver man than me. Having Eichel there would be worth taking the hit on whatever prospects we lose in the deal.

i didn’t post that, you did. I have a loaded system of kids and a 27 yr old Zibby. I’m in no hurry to do anything with my core in the 19/20 yr old age group as if Eichel is the end all. No way

Im not gonna go back through old posts but I feel like you used to say we should try to win while Kakko and Fox were on elc's and Mika's on his sweetheart deal (think it was the argument for resigning Kreider iirc). Wouldnt getting Eichel be exactly that?

+$3-8.5M from Hank
+Strome and ADA savings have to be relative to their new contracts not last year
-Whoever replaces ADA

And, then there’s Buchnevich, another player that’s ‘on the block’. My offer is DeAngelo, Buchnevich, Chytil and Carolina’s first...that’s $7 million or so going out. I figure you keep Kravtsov as his ELC doesn’t come into play as soon as Chytil’s does. Your top six is Kreider, Panarin, Zibanejad, Eichel, Kakko and Lafreniere.

Yeah, if Eichel has asked out and the Sabres are okay NOT including the following players:
Lafreniere
Kaako
Fox
Shesty

Then it’s game on and I’m finding a way to make this work. Eichel is a 24 year old #1 center signed long term. If that means in 2 years you’re forced to bridge a guy like Kaako or Shesty or Fox in order to make it work in the short term fine. Or when the tile comes you look to trade a guy like Trouba or Kreider once their NMC’s expire. This is years down the road.

I don’t think people understand, Eichel is just as good as Panarin offensively. And he plays center. Players like this don’t become available often.

We should be using that money to address desperate needs. This team still sucks.

I have an extremely hard time seeing the team being bad with 3 proven PPG players up front and 2 more talents on ELCs with that kind of pedigree just waiting to break out. Not to mention drastically improved goaltending and your biggest anchor on D playing in Detroit for the year. There's also nothing preventing them from making an additional move or signing to improve the defense.
