5.5 dead cap space + whatever amount it’s going to cost to sign a veteran backup. What are they really saving? I think maybe lundqvist pushed for this one. Would be interesting to see what team he ends up with.
They're already paying Georgie. Or they can trade him for assets and sign a cheap backup. Worth it

I remember Burke saying that Auston Matthews is gone once he hits UFA. Toronto needs cap relief.... would they dare trade him this early?

Would be a short list of teams who could offer something that wouldn't have Toronto hang up immediately. Maybe WPG could put something together around Laine, or BUF if they wanted to pitch an Eichel/Matthews swap. I don't know Dallas's cap situation going in to next year, maybe they try to pack Seguin+.

Really hoped he would retire, but I don't blame him for not doing so. The bad optics of his career ending via buyout probably is worth a lot less to him than 3+ million dollars after taxes.

Doesn't save NYR much space to do so, but I suppose it gives them the option to keep Georgiev around.

The rangers are officially back in business with Shesterkin & Georgiev to start the year.

whenever that may be. But I believe we are playoff bound for sure
Plus add in Laf likely steps in as a bonafide top six talent on day one (regardless of what line he plays on).

I guess I just don't understand the three spot comment because the league is shifted from the idea of one two three four five six into pairings that have assigned zone starts in matchups. I'm not trying to convince you he was used the perfect way, I guess I just look at it like the whole concept of how defense is deployed now is different. I used to view it the same way you do, but I've kind of given into how the league is shifted now especially with the use of analytics. I respect you if you don't agree that's fine.

OK how about we just to simplify things a bit.
The league has shifted into a much more offensive scheme.
Why wouldn't you put your 50+ point scoring defensemen on the 2nd pairing over a rookie who was still outscored?
Sorry.. It just doesn't make sense to me..

I can't shake the feeling that Eichel ends up here. Mackenzie never says anything without some sort of inside info, especially now since he's pretty much retired.

yeah but in this case his inside info wasn’t indicative of anything being close, like at all

Would this be fair trade at the draft, to improve the 3rd and 4th lines??

Jake Virtanen and Adam Gaudette to Rangers for Lias Andersson and 22th overall???

I wouldn't give up 22 for Virtanen. Lias and a 3rd? Sure but not a first. Virtanen's name has been out there for weeks. This is just Dreger doing Benning a solid to try and drive up the market.

Yea but the first whispers of Nash, for example, started a longggg time before it got ramped up.

this seems very similar to that scenario.

it certainly seems like Eichel will stay put for now but if they’re bad next season he’ll be gone.

He wouldn't have brought it up if he didn't know something, he never does, he will dance around it because he usually wants to protect the source. Im not saying im for it because id have to see the deal but Zibanejad and Eichel as the top 2 centers is pretty appealing

It feels like you're looking at this too broadly

Not a fan of this buyout. So much wasted cap space.

I really like this years draft. Geo i would imagine would have fetched a 2nd round pick. Or another prospect that is on the cusp. Or a player to insert. The club has netminders in the system. They always find a backup. Wonder if there was a deal to be had and Hank nixed it?

I think he only brought it up because he was away being semi-retired and had to come back for draft stuff and heard the rumor from weeks ago and checked in on it because it was news to him

I just dont agree with the buyout. He has ONE year left. Georgiev is a backup. His value wont ever be higher. They should be selling him to the highest bidder and letting Hank be the backup for the final year. That $3 million in savings this year is not absolutely necessary. I mean Georgiev should be moved regardless, but that $3 million you are saving is now going towards a Vet backup anyway, or at least half of it is. Just let the staple of this organization finish his contract at out. I could understand if he had 3-4 years left, even just 2 years left. But its ONE year.

Completely disagree with the move.

Henrik Lundqvist made the NY Rangers relevant in the last 15 years after the almost decade in the abyss. He's been a great Ranger, almost singlehandedly got the Rangers a Stanley Cup in 2014 (unfortunately, didn't have the supporting cast to win a Cup during his career as a NYR) and has been the face of the franchise. They will hang his banner in the rafters in MSG sometime in the not too distant future. This kind of ending of his tenure here did not go as he would've wanted, or anyone could've foreseen.

I thank him for his contributions to the franchise; he was THE reason the team had any chance to win a Cup in the last 15 years. I wish him the best in his future endeavours.

(BTW; welcome back, RangerBoy! I hope all is well with you.)

I was thinking about this out of the blue just today. For shits and giggles, what kind of package would we have to put together to get Eichel into a Ranger uniform?

You have to believe we'd have to send a couple of 1st rounders probably a Chytil type prospect and possibly one of our young dmen who aren't here yet....ie Robertson. I'm just spit balling here but thinking what I just suggested could be something Buffalo would consider and where we'd still be dealing from strength.

I dunno maybe I'm not seeing why not but it seems like win/win deal to me.

I believe we are now at the point where we are gonna see ads on jerseys. Sad times. I’ll never buy a jersey with an ad on it but I can see why they would do it now to recoup costs.

That's one great way to do it. It will be interesting to see how things evolve, I can certainly see that happening.

From Brooks' article:

Bringing back the icon to be a backup for this coming season was never a serious option for either party. It would be one thing for Lundqvist to back up somewhere else, quite another for him to be relegated to that assignment here. The months following Shesterkin’s Jan. 6 promotion created a series of uncomfortable moments when the Man of the Hour for 15 years became little more than an afterthought and an object of curiosity. It was not easy.

Hank didn't want to be the backup in NY. Clear as day.

This has no bearing on whether or not they trade Georgiev.
