I think it's been established that Trouba's contract looks bad when you compare it to the best contracts in the league--contracts signed by teams with leverage over players we never had with Trouba.

Sure, but that's way down on the list when comparing Trouba's contract (1 RFA year, 6 UFA years) to Theodore's (5 RFA years, 2 UFA years)

It's weird. I was told he was just going to retire and give the team cap relief and forego the millions because other things matter more and he cares about the optics and such. Hm.

And? People really overestimate the monetary value of those things.

Trouba signed a 7 year contract that included 6 UFA years. Theodore signed a 7 year contract that included 2 UFA years. These contracts aren’t really comparable to each other and anyone who thinks they are has a really poor understanding of NHL economics.
