I don't even dislike Kreider.

I just have trouble with the bigger picture stuff, it still seems like the Rangers are building two separate teams. One which is drafted recently and will need new more extensive contract soon, and a different one where they signed/extended players who are going to leave their prime before the younger enter their primes.

While I think someone like Eichel, even at his cap hit could help bridge that gap, it also seems like the cap allocation already spent on some of those older guys hurts that reconciliation process.

I don't know, something like two different GMs, one who controls the sell/draft build process and another who is trying to keep them competitive and I'm not sure if those two camps can meet where it end up with awesomeness.

I feel like there are always going to be contracts, not just one, that the Rangers would like to get rid of in order to make the team better, yet they just can not get rid of them when the timing is right. That never ending process of that kind of drives me crazy, because I think that timing could end up in a cohesive maybe even great team if they would just let it play out. I always feel like they are a year ahead in thinking they'll be good and that turns into a a step back by not waiting for it.
This is my gigantic worry too, and why I'm so hesitant to want to give Zibanejad his next contract too. I really don't want to be paying 3 players in their mid 30's (two of which already have injury concerns) like 25-30% of the cap when their play likely isn't going to line up with their salaries and are going to be a drag on what should be the primes of the players we've drafted/are about to draft

Sometimes you can't just wait for it, sometimes you have to act if an opportunity presents itself like signing Panarin. You can't have a team made up entirely of 22 yo's on ELC's. There are 3 ways to build a contending team, trades, FA, and drafting. So far I'm very happy with what JG and JD have done. If we somehow wind up trading for Eichel(I doubt it will happen) I'm pretty sure both of them have thought long and hard about future ramifications.

The reason you accumulate assets isn't just to fill in your roster...you also get them so that if a guy like eichel becomes available... A true blue franchise center who isn't even 24 yet... You jump on it. Eichel only downside is his cap hit. It's a lot. And if we didn't have kreider signed long term of feel way easier about it. But we've got kakko and lafreniere cost controlled for several years to come . By the time they're gonna get really paid guys like kreider and panarin will be on their way out...

But, how many of those teams have both the assets and the cap space to make such a deal?

Jets and Avs have the assets and the space but not sure the Avs have the need. Then again, they keep getting linked to all kinds of FAs so who knows?

Wild could be a player. They have the need, cap, and are willing to move assets.

Boston has the need and potentially the space but not the assets.

Calgary I guess could be interested but could they entice the Sabres with guys like Gaudreau who are two years away from walking out the door? They also cut costs this summer.

Jersey could be a dark horse but do they have the license to spend? Sens probably have the assets and the space but not the motivation to spend.

Jackets could maybe swing it but IDK their financial situation in terms of ownership.

Anaheim could probably do it but not sure of their finances either.

The only entity that benefited from all of the details in the McKenzie tweet is Buffalo. The trade demand smears Eichel. The Ranger leak blows up their spot and reveals their plans. The tweet starts the bidding, blames Eichel for the coming trade, and naming the rangers drives up price. They have the best asset in the draft and $5.7m in new cap space.

Gorton doesn't release info. Eichel's agent isn't privy to trade talk. If you trade your franchise player, you do it at the start of your new GM's tenure. The Pegulas have no idea how to run a hockey team and feel betrayed by traditional hockey minds. Who knows what they are thinking and how much money is a factor.

Based on historical returns, the trade is 3 to 4 pieces. If we ended up doing it: ADA, Chytil/Buchnevich, Howden/Kravtsov, #22.

Pretty much what I’ve been saying.

Eichel is going to cost too much in prospects and salary for me. If they had moved Kreider, I think this would have tons of legs to it. Near $30 in space with the pool they have.

Also, if they don't keep Kreider, are they getting #1? I've gone down that road before, but everything that happened after the TDL might not happen without Kreider on the team, even with him getting hurt. No immediate 2LW for the team without Laf or Kreider.

The team that makes sense to me is the one about to lose the cup. Eichel would slot Seguin down into the 2C role, they have some young guys that Buffalo could be interested in.

I don't think he gets moved. Buffalo is a dumpster fire organization, but he's going to be there for at least another year or two.

They don't really have any assets. Minnesota is kind of f***ed in 8 different directions right now.

NJ's problem is lack of NHL talent to send the other way unless they are willing to move Hischer. Would Eichel even be happy going there? That organization is as big of a cluster f*** as the Sabres are.

I think Winnipeg and Calgary are out of the conversation based on their location alone.

I would give credit where it's due but I had to browse 20 pages to catch up do I probably missed it. You're smarter than me so I'm not shocked you found the value already.

I doubt we are the landing spot, but if certain teasers dropped recently turn out to be true that Lundqvist is retiring.... And subtract a new Strome deal with the Ottawa trade. And no ADA deal here. The money is suddenly there.

Sure I can see that point of view, yet Kreider in my opinion goes outside of that. He was/is not Panarin and had Panarin in front of him already. It is not like LWs are the most difficult commodity to come by.

I too am happy with what JG has done, yet much like before him there seems to be something there that just does not quite line up.

The new GM cleaning house angle isn't something I really considered much but it could make sense. Between Eichel and his buddy Reinhart the Sabres could reload rather quickly. Put out the "new era" messaging and make it seem like Eichel was the head of the country club instead of the guy putting the team on his back.

Well Eichel has zero control over where he goes, so location is a non-factor unless the Sabres want to do him a solid. That's the danger of forcing a trade without having trade protection.

As far as Minnesota goes if we're pitching ADA, 22, and other pieces they could put together something around Dumba, the 9th overall, and Boldy and probably be right in the mix. They also have Fiala and Kaprizov though I doubt they'd want to include them.

if Laf is all he's hyped up to be, he's cost controlled up to his ELC. Case in point, see Eichel's current contract. Kakko could explode and put himself into similar territory.

Of course. And I'm not looking to trade either of them

The rangers aren't in a position to trade away major cost controll assets.

The framework I'd use is what's above...

DeAngelo, buchnevich, 22, prospect (robertson for example)

That's what we need to be looking at.

2 roster players a pick and a prospect...like universally the accepted return for a franchise player

Gonna catch flak for this but while Eichel is very good I don't think he's as good as people are making him out to be here. I wouldn't consider him "elite" yet if he can't stay healthy and his career high is 82 points

I also think you do have to take into consideration the optics of selling the fanbase on the future of the franchise being these home grown high draft picks like Kakko and Lafreniere and then turning around and trading them away for another disgruntled "superstar" (like we haven't seen that before).

I admit I'm coming down heavily on the pessimistic side of this but with so many people ready to hop up and trade a massive package for Eichel including the #1 overall and highly talented important roster players etc is like watching the Rangers fans of yesteryear getting excited about whatever player they sign on free agency day
