I think there’s also a difference between a guy who can “maybe” slide into a fourth line role, and a guy who really owns that role. And even then, it’s harder to have multiple players fall into the maybe category.

My expectations for names like Richards, Fogarty and Gettinger are modest at best.

Yea i think of them as spares or 4th line call ups but they could surprise ... never seen Richards so if he’s good on faceoffs His stock could rise

Really? I have to tell you this? For starters Barron who physically and mentally is NHL ready and who has the perfect game to assume a role player position. They signed Richards who is great in the dot and was an elite defensive forward in college. Both have played 3 years of college. Barron will turn 22 in December and Richards 23 in March. They aren't kids. They already have Lemieux and Howden who are role guys. They want to bring back Fast. Then you have Gauthier with is size and speed and I haven't ruled out Lias who's game is perfect for a role player type but has the skill to be much more. There is ZERO reason to trade for a role player. It would be nonsense to say Barron and Richards aren't ready. They are. Richards was signed for a very specific reason. They know exactly what they are getting with him much like they do with Barron. These are not players in the Chytil or Buchnevich mold where you hope they put it together down the line. These players are guys with high hockey IQ's, top defensive skills, some offense to chip in, can play physical and kill penalties.

It would be nonsense to say that Barron and Richards are ready because neither has played professional hockey yet. They've never done it against professionals. Right now, they are just names.

Lias, right now, is not an NHLer either.

All the sudden, Howden is beyond criticism?

The bottom six, among other things, was exposed during the play-in series.

The worst thing you can do to a young player/prospect is hand him a spot.

The only thing the Rangers need to do is get rid of McKegg and Smith. Quinn is like all coaches. He falls in love with some useless toys and one of my criticisms of Gorton is he allows this to happen far too often. I would like to see our bottom lines looks as follows. I'm sick of watching Chytil win less than 40% of his draws. So unless he miraculously fixes that, he needs to play wing. Buchnevich needs to be shown the door.

And they could. However, none of them is type that would prevent a modest deal that delivered a tangible upgrade to the fourth line either.

I hear every year that prospects aren't ready. Most of it is nonsense. When you play three years of college hockey, come from a top program with a great system and your a player with a high hockey IQ, you are ready for the NHL.

but never giving opportunity is almost as bad,
for example playing OGara and Gilmour regularly without giving Graves a sniff
this coming season, NYR not Cup contender,
I'd rather give young guys icetime OPPORTUNITIES to show IF they can contribute
rather than the usual-suspects, forgotten-in-a-year, guys like Haley or McKegg

Two rookie centers who have never played professional hockey. What could go wrong?

They need to earn a spot. They need to break down the door. The same way Dubinsky, Callahan, Girardi and Hank did. The same way Zucc did. The same way Chytil did.

Who the hell is Richards?

I actually completely forgot about him myself until he started popping up on here in recent days.

Decent enough defensive forward prospect with a marginal chance to become an NHL player. As free agent signings go, he's okay.

But sometime between April and now he's now being considered for things that are best described as eagerly optimistic.

in addition to earning spots, we also need to factor the potential impact to other young players playing with guys that aren't ready vs the potential benefit of maybe playing with a guy with more experience that can help teach them.

Richards and Barron are incredibly similar to Vesey and Hayes. One less year of college played, better defensively, better intangibles with less offensive game in college. Vesey and Hayes never played an AHL game. I don't expect Richards and Barron to either. Our role players have been pathetic the past few years. Especially defensively. Watching Fast, he embarrasses the role players we have on this team. Our current role players are just plain stupid defensively. They aren't in the right place most of the time. They have no defensive instincts. They don't break up plays. They don't block a lot of shots. They aren't good on the PK unit. Barron and Richards can help change that.

1. A player has to sign his qualifying offer
2. Lemieux is arbitration eligible

I know, I should have said close to his qualifier.

So they make him a qualifying offer of 925K

He elects arbitration

Maybe the Rangers offer him ~1M-1.5 for a year prior to any hearing, maybe they do not

And even if they go through with the whole arbitration process, what comparable RFA's salary would he use to justify getting a big award considering his 18 and 17 point last two seasons? I mean he was tied in scoring last year for 280th place among forwards. I guess I just don't see any award coming in all that much above his qualifier.

Just because you say they're incredibly similar to Hayes and Vesey doesn't make it so. Vesey was Hobie Baker winner. Kevin Hayes was a first round draft pick. Neither of the two you mentioned can say that.

It's very easy to decide that Barron and Richards are ready to step into the lineup. But there's nothing to show that they are.

Unless Chytil miraculously improves a skill that most all young centers struggle with...

I have absolutely no recollection of this.

we signed him, Austin Rueschhoff and Patrick Khodorenko back in March/April. It adds some depth to the system and hartford but they are a long way from being factors...last year people were excited that we signed Elmer and Newell and they both stink. so we should probably lets this new trio actually play some AHL games before penciling them in the lineup. Its free assets so it can only be positive but shiny new toy definitely happening here

Not getting reps in NHL games does not mean a player was never given the opportunity. These guys are evaluated in the minors, camp, and practice with the regulars. I get that the Rangers are not contenders next season, but they could easily take a step backwards if they commit a bunch of unknowns or AAAA players to the bottom six.
