I see your point and raise you a Shattenkirk. We have a cap you know, is this Sather?

A guy who played through an injury when he should have and was still productive until his knee couldn't take it anymore?

Not sure thats a great point.

But yeah, guys like Jay-Bo and Niskanen really killed the last 2 cup winner's chances at competing... Oh wait...

We can go back even further if you'd like.

If the team offers Fast a 3 years x $3m deal and front loads it with signing bonuses as well it’s easily moveable in that final season. He provides cheap insurance all over the roster as kids progress, whether that be as a top-6 winger or bottom-6 winger.
Agreed. But the ability to offer such a deal hinges a lot on what happens with Lundqvist, Staal, Smith, ADA, and Strome.

This is very true. I’d have to assume Gorton wouldn’t offer Fast a deal and then worry about what’s going on with the other guys.

I’ve said this before but in terms of what this team needs next year and more than likely over the next few years, I’d be more inclined to keep Fast and trade Strome.

Makes total sense – but of course, this ALSO depends on what happens with other players, namely what other 2C options present themselves. :) I have a lot of faith in Chytil over the long haul, but I don't see them going into next season with him as the only option to fill that role...

Of our free agents, the only UFA to consider is Fast. But I don't think it's wise to sign him before other positions are prioritized. They must know the situations with Lundqvist and Staal. Then, they need to turn focus on DeAngelo and Strome. Are they signed or are there upgrades to be had? Then figure out if they're moving Georgy or keeping him. And any other salaries that could get moved out -- Buch?

THEN they deal with Fast and Lemieux. If they sign Quickie or Pepe before the other moves, then I'm guessing those are already in place but not announced. Do work on Fast or Lemme just to get them out of the way first would seem like suspect management.

Are you comparing this team to those teams? We aren't close to being a player away from a cup. The point is that we need our cap space, the Shattenkirk signing is a perfect example of jumping before you are ready and now we pay for it with his cap on our books, money we could use right now to keep players that need contract, next year we have 2.5 mill in dead cap, probably enough to sign Fast.

Those teams weren't either.

Caps were coming off of a season where they missed the playoffs all together when they signed Niskanen (and Orpik, who definitely falls into the category of a Girardi or Staal.)

How was Shattenkirk an example of jumping before they were ready? They had made the playoffs in back to back seasons before they signed him. Everyone expected this team to be in the playoff hunt the season after he signed. It became apparent early on that they needed to blow it up and start over again.

You can't revise history, especially when it wasn't that long ago and most of us remember it clearly.

So many of u get hung up on offensive stats
Fast is a HUGE part of this team
He is our best PKer
He makes up for strome's def whoas
Without Fast I dont think pan strome work
Put kak, krav, buch, gauth or chy on that line and they give up as many goals as they score
I'd sign Fast for 4 years at 3.5mil
Players like him win championships
Look how bad we were after he got knocked out
And all the players love him
A true team player

Signed,
Fast's agent

Fast is a loss we will really be feeling this season. The only thing is that he needs to be in the bottom 6. Not the 2nd line with Panarin. He's a perfect bottom sixer.

We were in limbo, they werent one player away from a cup, its why they decided to break it down and rebuild. I dont know why i have to explain this, the team went downhill after 2014 and needed to rebuild. The Shattenkirk deal basically put us in a jam because we couldn't offer Tony a long term deal last year with his buyout hit, we probably could have signed him for 6x 4-5 mill. But sure, just do what we always do, sign older players and cap out then trade our kids away to try and solve the problem

I don't mind him on the 2nd line if our 3rd line is good. Like if Lafreniere, Chytil and Kakko light it up on a 3rd line and we have three really good lines because fast is adequate on the 2nd line thats fine. He is better suited to bottom six but maybe he helps us spread out the talent.

Just because Dvorak may be available under new management doesn't mean it will be easy to get him regardless

Trades that are bigger than just your run-of-the-mill shuffles will be even more meticulous this offseason due to the shortened offseason, no cap increase, flat cap projection in coming years, and looming expansion draft.

So, a trade for Dvorak would very likely have to be a trade where we know we are losing on overall value.

Basically, where Gorton says "hey, I know we are losing this trade, but it is one that we want to make because we get the best piece in the deal"
Salary cap relief for Arizona and a favorable contract going forward are valuable pieces in any deal.

There’s trouble in Arizona. Meruillo is a cash poor billionaire who is getting clobbered in his primary business. The Coyotes were (very) late paying July 1 bonuses and players were grumbling all the way until the plane left for Edmonton. The team is still losing money hand over fist and the only way they are getting a new arena is if it privately financed most likely by an Indian Casino. That’s another business where cash has dried up too.

I would never have seen Dvorak being available until this situation turned upside down. Look past the stats...he is a really good hockey player. It will take a lot...a lot to get him out of Arizona but this may turn into a fire sale.

I realize that there's more to hockey than offense, but moving Buchnevich to keep Fast seems iffy to me.

If we're moving him to have space to re-sign stars in years to come sure, but not so we can play Fast 3 million.

Lehrer is going to get a long term big ticket contract from someone. And it is well deserved.

If it is Vegas, they are going to have to move some serious cap. If it is somewhere else, it could be any of 20 different clubs. He upgrades a lot of teams. Even teams as deep as the second round this year.

His story is terrific and his success is well earned. I’m rooting for him.

Who is untouchable in the AZ fire sale at this point other than Hayton and Chychrun?

It’s a bit of a weird scenario in that if you were to ask me which player fits the team the best over the next 3-4 years in terms of playing style augmenting what is coming or already in NY I’d say Fast over Buch or Strome. Now this upcoming season is where it gets more difficult because the RW depth is poor behind Buch and the team is still developing their centers.

If the 2 year plan for this team were to keep Fast and trade Buch and Strome I think that would fit the cap allocation and depth the best. Give Chytil, Kaako, Gauthier, Lemieux, Lafreniere, Kravtsov, Howden and hopefully Andersson another year to develop but after that most of those guys are going to slant more towards offense. That’s going to leave a Swiss Army knife and excellent 2-way winger like Fast as a unique piece on the team. He’d be a staple in the bottom-6 with more than likely young players around him.

I’d seriously consider a very good offer for Dvorak if he were remotely available. He’d be an ideal fit on that 2nd line.

Hate to do a spellcheck but whoas for woes is too egregious.

The reason why Strome Fast Panarin work is Panarin---Panarin makes everyone he plays with better. Seriously I prefer Fast in more of a checking role than on a scoring line. If Panarin had a for real right wing who could score goals he'd be even more dangerous. The thought has occurred to me also having Panarin on the right wing and Lafreniere on his line on the left. Keep Zib with Buch and Chris and Fil and Kakko with somebody else.

I'm not convinced Gauthier is an NHL level player and Kravtsov certainly hasn't proven to be yet. My hope is that Kakko will fit in as 2RW next year--he did look better when September came around.
