I didn't see

Mika, Kreider, Buchnevich.

Don't really expect it from Panarin. And Both Kaako and Cytil are still finding themselves

I think they respond well.

But I don't feel that they initiate often enough.

Not knocking the skill they do have, but i think they can engage earlier and more often.
What does "engage" mean?

Actually forecheck and play along the boards? That's not part of our system.

Gauthier is gritty ? You mean Kreiderlike Gritty ? Personally I don't call that being gritty . Howden ? He must do a lot of it when the camera is off of him . As for the rest...they do meet the qualifications of being gritty and if Kreider and Gauthier can bring that for consistently ....we will be OK . If it is only every 3rd 0r 4th game.....we will struggle .

Kreider plays the walls well and is one of the best players in the paint in the league.

Thats useful "grit." I hate that they re-signed him for as long as they did but lets not act like he's some soft floater.

Guy Boucher and his infamous defensive system are available. I could see him signing on to be an AC somewhere.

So is Todd Reirden just not going to get an NHL job this year?

Yes, Howden. Absolutely Howden. It's not my cup of tea, but there's no other reason he would play. Quinn likes him because he tries hard. He's basically said this ("good intentions").
Well if he can turn into that for us and ply that on the 4th line and win some draws and deter the other club's #1 offensive C's....then sign me up long term . I don't think one more year of him[and 15pounds ]will make or break us at this stage .

Gauthier is the type of guy who is difficult to play against because of his size, strength and reach. The fact that he doesn’t demolish people every shift doesn’t mean he isn’t hard to play against.
And most of the guys who do "demolish people every shift" (I don't think anybody actually does, but that type of player) are evidently easy to play against by one glance at their on-ice results.

Nick Ritchie is a very convenient example. All he does is try to hurt people and he's been the best player for the Lightning (he plays for the Bruins).

Say what you want...but if Kreider and Gauthier played to their size way more often then they do....we would not be having this grit discussion . Gauthier gets a kind of pass so far because he is new here...but for Kreider there is no excuse and most of us know that by now and how he leaves us all hanging wanting more than a few tip ins from the crease . We need that for 7 Million . Somehow I doubt we will ever see it at this point . I'm not going to hold my breath .

Your definition of Grit is not what we're discussing here.

People trashing on Howden are the same people clammouring for a rebuild. This is how rebuilds go, you draft or trade for young players and let them grow in the organization. Anyone who expected Howden to be a finished product now has never watched him play throughout his career especially given the style he always played with. When i was with our provincial program we talked to the other teams and everything Quinn says about Howden was echoed back then, gives 100%, is willing to learn, has a good skill set, is willing to put in the time and is VERY coachable. The other thing that was said then was that he was more of a power forward, using his size for points and was effective at it. This here is the key point, he hasn't gotten his man strength yet so we have no idea what he is or can be once that happens. He is tall but slender, there probably is an issue with rushing him into the NHL knowing his game would have to adjust until he grew so i do think they may have failed him there but to be fair, Hartford was a mess at the time and sending him there probably wasn't the right idea either. Lets give him time to grow as a player and in size before we chuck him on the scrap pile, he's young.

Thats just really hard to tell, because he gets almost no minutes at all.

I'd be really interested in bringing John MacLean in. HC experience, experience with the Rangers and MSG Network, he may have been teammates with David Oliver in either NY or Dallas. IDK

Right, so why are we speculating that he would come here?
Because we could always request to interview him, just like Florida did with Drury, just like Jersey did with Ruff. Also, people dont like working with or for Tortorella, and people do like working for JD.

no one is speculating that he would come here...he was a guy interviewed by the rangers when quinn was hired. he was brought up as a guy that would be a good replacement for ruff and others agreed. nothing more to it at this point.

He's 22 and he does precisely zero things well.

We need to stop using the young/rebuild excuse. He's been given twice the opportunity most prospects get.
