Eh, the Blues needed cap flexibility regardless of whether or not they were going to try to bring back Pietrangelo. Don't think moving Allen is necessarily indicative of that situation getting any closer.

Dunn needs a new deal and Tarasenko's shoulder is shot again. They might want to bring in secondary scoring to hedge against that.

But is he worth more than a 2nd to other teams? That's the question.
That is a good question, which would them be followed up by: if so, how much more?

We know what he is here currently. We also know that it is silly to presume that anyone can simply step in and do the same thing. We also know that Chytil has not showed enough to believe that he is ready for such a role. So again, while there certainly is a market clearing rate for everything, unless the return was overwhelming his worth here as a 2-4 year stop gap is in all probability greater than the return profile.

With the Allen trade, do the Blues promote Husso, or replace Allen via trade/free agency? Could Georgiev be an option for them?

But...

I wouldn’t be shocked if they moved Binnington too. He did not out-play Allen this season.

They got a very capable backup to lighten the workload of their most important player. This trade is an investment in Price's longevity.
I guess but 15 million tied up to goalies doesn’t seem like a recipe for success

Even if it’s just for 1 year

While we all see Strome as being propped up by Panarin I've always kind of had the feeling that the Rangers view him as a reasonably priced option who produces really well with their best player. We're all thinking 1-2 year stop-gap. They might be thinking more along the lines of solidifying the 2nd line for the next 3-4 years.

Laf/Zib
Panarin/Strome
Chytil/Kakko

Good luck matching up against that group if the kids take a big leap forward. And that's before you factor in the guys like Kreider, Gauthier, Buchnevich, and Kravtsov who might be sprinkled in there.

They have the cap space to go with their preferred option. Sure, you could wait until free agency and maybe get a cheaper option, but you could also be left out in the cold and scrambling. It's about certainty and checking an item off the list so they can focus on other things.

Strome is the classic player you overpay for and I’m expecting nothing less from the Rangers tbh

Not that I believe a single word 4ever Blueshirts writes anyways

Anything more than 1-2 years worries me, and I don’t hate Strome as much as others around here do.

Why would he sign his QO instead of just going to arbitration?

I was replying to someone else. I don't see why he would either.

The Rangers have limited cap space and several players to sign. If he's looking for a bigger payday and the Rangers can't make it work, he could be traded. So he has to weigh how much he wants to stay with the Rangers vs how much money he can get. Strome seems like a smart guy. He probably realizes that his best opportunity is to keep playing with Panarin, raise his value further, and then try to cash in the following year. The easiest way to accomplish that is to simply sign his QO. He's going to lose 20% to escrow anyway, and it gets him to UFA status at the earliest possible time.

If he takes the Rangers to arbitration, he will probably get a larger reward, but it will still only be a 1 year deal, and then the Rangers will likely have the option to walk away. The Rangers walked away from Zherdev.

Of course, this all changes if Lundqvist or Staal retires, or ADA is traded without bringing significant cap back, but barring that, signing his QO is the best way to ensure that he's still a Ranger next year.

It really comes down to how you project him. If you think he's coming into his own as a 20G/50P player and Panarin is turning him into a 65+ point player, that's a pretty decent player to have at <$5m per year over the next 3-4 years. If you think he's basically a fluke, even as a sidekick to Panarin, then committing to him long term looks terrifying. I can see both sides of it and I'm glad I don't have to make the decision that the Rangers do.

How good is Morgan Barron supposed to be? I know he’s big can he skate? Is he in the mix as a center or wing?

Positional decision?

Yeah it just seems like exactly the type of player people are trying to find as the 2C. Defensively responsible, still skilled enough to play with better players, etc. Plus it alleviates the current glut of wingers and doesn’t force you to have to play one of Panarin, Kreider or Lafreniere on their off-side 2 years from now.
