I agree about Deangelo being offensively gifted. The problem is he is below average on d and if the offense dries up a bit you are left with a smallish, though fiesty version of Tyson Barrie. I know our team wasn't good in the post season outside of a handful of players but Deangelo's game was an example of what you are left with if the offense dries up. He is a wonderful skater, great passer, and can sneak in back door with the best of them but personally I'd wanna see what we could get for him in his career year considering we have enough players in his position to make that move. If we can't get something that makes us stronger in another area I'm fine keeping him on a short term deal and kicking the can down the road.

That goes for all offensive D.

You're still using a 3 game sample as your primary argument. I guess the Blues should flip us Parayko for a 4th because he was bad in the Vancouver series.

What do people think about Eriksson Ek? What kind of player is he and what is his upside? Does he have the potential to be a 2C? Looking at his stats, he takes a lot of faceoffs, but isn't very good at it. He doesn't get PP time, but did play 2 mins a game on the PK this year. He's 23 and has good size.

This may seem a bit crazy, but I was playing around with the CapFriendly armchair GM feature and came up with this trade:

Strome, Buch and Georgiev

for

Brodin, Eriksson Ek and Greenway

They get 2 guys who can play in their top 6, plus a potential #1 goalie. We get a dman who can play with Trouba (granted he only has 1 year left, but he just turned 27), a player who can hopefully become our 2C, and a bottom 6 player with great size.

We could slide Kreider to RW and have a lineup like this:

Hank bought out, Laf at 3.775 because we have to account for his bonuses since we have exceeded the bonus cushion. ADA on a 1 year deal.

Islanders paid thru the nose for that 4th line. They have to play them. Will be a problem very soon.

it’s not the norm

Howden cannot be a top 6 center. He was never going to be before he was in the NHL(I tracked his progress beforehand when he was a Tampa prospect and never saw high ceiling personally) and he really hasn’t proven anything while here besides the fact that he looks outmatched most of the time.

Rangers appear to like him though. I see what you see. Even many routine passes are misses. Strange to watch

It's a very big decision and, along with Georgiev, is one of the few that needs to be made this offseason

as long as the player doesn’t have a full blown NTC i think the Rangers are safe.

Let’s hope this doesn’t turn into a Zubov II situation. The Rangers lose Zubov and for the rest of his career the Rangers realized they really could have used him.

Martin is ufa but he likely takes less money like Reaves did

Barzal will get a huge raise then a guy like Komorov makes too much and needs to go

I don’t want NYR to sign any ufa to a goofy contract .. 1 yr deals that’s it

For the record not advocating this. Just interesting. That would be a tough contract to move. 29 years old with 7 years remaining at $8.25.

I mean...Todd Reirdan would be a natural hire here as an assistant, no? He helped coach the Capitals defense to a Stanley Cup only a couple of years ago. We happen to need a new "defensive coordinator."

Seems like a natural fit. Am I missing something or should this be a slam dunk?

If I was Reirdan I wouldn’t want to be an assistant under an inexperienced guy like Quinn

He’ll get a job elsewhere I’m sure

Reirdan as an assistant, coaching the defense:

2014-15: 2.43 goals against per game, 7th in the NHL
2015-16: 2.33 goals against per game, 2nd in the NHL
2016-17: 2.16 goals against per game, 1st in the NHL
2017-18: 2.90 goals against per game, 16th in the NHL

In those four seasons combined, Washington allowed 2.45 goals per game, lower than every team in the NHL but one. He was also in charge of the team's power play.

Am I missing something or should we all over this? I guess he could also go back to Pittsburgh.

I think being under an inexperienced coach like Quinn would be exactly what he wants if another HC job isn't waiting for him.

If he tightens up the D and Quinn can't get the job done, he becomes a candidate (if not the favorite) to take over a team that is very much on the upswing. Not that I'm advocating his hire, but the opening we have at that spot is a pretty damn good opportunity for anyone.

Where have they been the last 2 seasons?

Trotz effect had an impact on those 4.

The only guys im replacing Quinn with are Paul Maclean or Gerard Gallant. Look at the effeft Maclean had on the Jackets when he got there, night and day.

I think it would be a pretty ideal spot for him. He's not going to get another head coaching spot resting on the laurels of his first one. He'll get credit for a lot of things that are probably inevitable: Trouba's bounceback, Fox's rise to stardom. If the Rangers start making noise in the playoffs in the next few years there will be a lot of attention. The Rangers also would likely make him an associate coach, meaning more money.

This is exactly the type of guy we need
Sadly he peaked 4 years ago and has been declining slowly since
Im sure part of that is reflected by the team's play also declining but still
8 mil for a declining dman, no thanks
Unless trouba goes ;)

Trotz likely had a lot to do with it. And not for nothing, it was very concerning how the transition went down. All of those rumors of Reirdan replacing Trotz during a cup run? Trotz gets run out of town under the ruse of a bonus payment? Reirdan being the GM's guy is one thing. Him being a part of an active coup during a Stanley Cup victory run is a character flaw.

The fact that the caps have looked uninspired since the change while the Isles are more than the sum of their parts under Trotz is the nail in the coffin. A lot of people noticed the very cold handshake between Trotz and Reirdan a few nights ago. Something stinks about that guy. There are more than enough people available.
