Let's assume NYR don't break the bank on a center in free agency this year. Copp and Strome depart, and no major trade is made.

What options are there out there for a more defensive-minded 3rd line center to hypothetically slide in behind Chytil, as opposed to in front of him?

If NYR go that route, what line does Panarin play on?

Kreider-Zib-Laf
Goodrow-Chytil-Kakko
Panarin-???-Kravtsov
Blais-???-Reaves/Hunt/Motte

Also, slightly odd that we were hearing that both a Kakko bridge and Motte deal were imminent a few days ago and crickets since.
I guess Weinberg from Seattle would qualify.

Back-up goalies.

Which backup goalie are the Rangers acquiring?

Wedgewood would have been perfect. He stayed in Dallas. 2 years/$2M.

Drury said he is looking to acquire a goalie in free agency or through a trade.

Martin Jones?
Jaro Halak?
Thomas Greiss?
David Rittich?
Eric Comrie?
Louis Domingue?
Charlie Lindgren? The Blues have a goalie named Joel Hofer who is apparently pretty good. Go with Hofer?

Braden Holtby is retiring.

Anton Khodubin is the odd man out in Dallas. He is coming off hip surgery. Dallas is looking to move him. Can they buy him out with his injury? He isn't cheap at $3,333,333.

Cheap contracts. No games played bonuses for Greiss or Halak.

Trade?

SJ has three goalies. Reimer and Hill are signed. Kahkonen? Grier will qualify him by tomorrow. Does SJ trade him? How much is Kahkonen looking for?

Is Toronto acquiring two veteran goalies? Maybe Eric Kallgren? Joseph Woll?

Ottawa has Filip Gustavsson. They are trying to trade Matt Murray. Even if they trade Murray, they could be in the market for a goalie. What happens to Gustavsson? Anton Forsberg just signed a contract extension in Ottawa.

And if that is what he needs to feel fulfilled with his contract then god bless him and good luck. He may not be playing on a true contender for another 3-4 years. He will be inching towards the twilight of his career. He will be playing at home so that could be another benefit to him. Although I think playing where you grew up is not as important as some of us make it all out to be. New York, as I am sure Copp knows by now and in speaking with Trouba, has a lot to offer.

Is Holtby definitely retiring? I know I read there was a rumor of it. If not, there is very much interest there.

Lindgren, Halak, Greiss would be next up as options.

Zac Jones is a good prospect but I don't want him as the second pairing LHD opening night without some decent insulation behind him on the 3rd pair that can step up and play those minutes if he struggles. I'd bring Braun back as the 7th that can play competently anywhere on the defensive corps on spot duty when called upon. Alex Edler is another one of those players if Braun doesn't want to come back.

Florida also can't take on any more cap. Even Lindgren's $3 million is going to be too rich for their blood. They need cheap talent on ELC's and to move cap out. Nils Lundkvist for Sam Bennett is the trade that makes sense for both teams.

That quote was from years ago. I'm putting zero stock into it.

Is Malkin a commrade of the motherland? Maybe he's looking to get a longer term contract to get a longer US work visa to avoid having to go back to Russia.

He goes to Florida, NYR, or stays in Pittsburgh. No chance he goes to Montreal at this stage, IMO.
I get your concerns about our left side without Lindgren, it certainly would be better with Ryan there.
Florida does have the cap space though. Anthony Duclair is out for the season and Lundell earns $925,000.00 so that offsets Lindgren’s salary coming in.
Zito knows he can’t go into next year’s playoffs with the same team. He needs players like Ryan Lindgren.
I don’t believe he’s concerned about 3-5 years from now. Lundell was a healthy scratch in game four against the Lightning.
You’ve gotta give to get.

Duclair is not out for the season. He's expected back in the second half of the season. They cannot bank on having that space for the whole year.

I think Louis Domingue would be a solid backup. Honestly he was impressive against us in the playoffs. He showed a lot of guts and confidence.

They can Kucherov him. Even if they don’t and he does return mid-season which is optimistic that’s 1.5 million.

No they can't because he's not supposed to be out nearly that long, his agent won't allow it, and the league won't allow it. And the especially can't because they already announced he's due back midseason so when he's not back midseason and they need the LTIR it will be painfully obvious to the league that they are circumventing it.

You mean like Tampa and Vegas?
Still, even if he is ready to play in game 42 that’s still half his salary.
You know he still gets paid if he’s out injured. So what does his agent have to do with it?

People need to stop looking at the Avs. They got lucky. MacKinnon took his time becoming elite so they had the second best player in the league making $6.3M. Of course the team was going to have crazy depth around that contract.

The Rangers have several contracts off of which the best they can hope for is to break even. They are not going to be able to build juggernaut depth around those contracts. They are very lucky to have Shesterkin locked in at below market rate for a few more years, and he’s going to have to continue to give them a chance because the money to surround him with a dominant team is just not available.

Two way, cheap players. That’s all they can afford. And they need to hope that Laf/Kakko/Kravtsov start looking elite tomorrow.

Yeah, and I mean, they deserved it, Mackinnon has been sick, Makar has been sick, they have many good players. But a Tampa without Point and others, ravaged by the cap, tired from playing late the 3rd season in a row, on some level still performed better in that series.

That's not how LTIR works. The space doesn't accumulate like unused cap space. If they use LTIR in the amount of his salary to get under the cap at the beginning of the season, they'll need to clear the full amount of his salary when he's ready to return.
