Brock Faber is a good prospect. LA acquired Fiala for a less than expected return. Marek had Guerin on his show on Thursday. Guerin said LA made me the offer. I accepted it. There weren't better offers available.

Faber is not a great prospect. Good prospect. All of the reports weren't great on him.

Drury better be careful. He already traded away futures for a rental unless he can keep Copp.

I don't want to harp on this topic because I probably spend TOO much time listening and reading this content.

Elliotte and Jeff were discussing the Kings on Thursday.

The Kings have no cap space for Copp or Manson. Why would the Kings with their ten million right shot D want Manson? If anything, Anaheim might bring back Manson because Verbeek isn't looking for a long-term build in Anaheim. Blake says no to Forsberg because Blake doesn't have $8.5M to give Forsberg which will be more in California. Tennessee is a no state income state. It would cost Blake $9M for Forsberg in California.

I can't wait for the salary shock of this year's free agent frenzy. Top dogs get their pay and there will be tons of high value guys that can be picked up for cheap. Our ELCs and RFAs are worth their weight in gold until the cap goes up. I doubt Drury is foolish enough to ignore the cap reality in pursuit of some "final piece" acquisition on the 2C hole.
There isn't enough money for all of these players. Some of these agents will circling back to the GM's and asking is your previous offer for my player still on the table.

I imagine no trade for a C until they see what happens W Copp?

Rather not trade assets but it may take a long term deal to get the AAV down

Guerin also said Faber needed to be in the offer. He was the guy the wild wanted. Let's not act like he just took some random offer. He said the kings were the most aggressive. Regardless they got the deal done and it seems it should help bring the market into reality that a point per game forward in his prime who was under team control was traded for a mid 1st and a single prospect. Not a 3 or 4 piece trade.

The landscape of the league for trade value is changing but the reality is that for any seller it still only takes one buyer to overpay for the seller to get what they want. It only takes one...

Call up Gorton, maybe he still like Gauthier, get Nate Schnarr, probably nothing there, but could eventually be a 4th liner, he’s an RFA with no arb rights.

He was in the Taylor Hall Devils/Yotes trade back in the day.

Even if he’s just a warm body in Hartford, better than nothing for Gauthier.
Gorton will pluck Gauthier from the wire for squat.....and then he goes on to become a French folk hero in Montreal .....their next Yvon Lambert guy .

I think everything comes down to how you define our "window" of serious Cup contention, if such a thing actually exists. If you see our window as opening for, say, the next three years, the question is how can the present team improve to take that next, and most difficult step, to contention?

We have a veteran core at their career peak: Zib, Kreider, Panarin, Trouba. They will never be better than they are, in fact Panarin might already be showing signs of late peak erosion.

We have an all-world goalie.

We have our young players with a few more on the way. Is there enough room for improvement here to, by itself, to elevate the team to that next level?

If you see our window as only three years (the cap makes it difficult to maintain a team for much longer), than perhaps you do what it takes to maximize our chances.

I am not in favor of trading either Chytil or KK. But if you see our window as only three years, maybe you do trade for Dubois, Miller, or Scheifele. Any of the three are better, right now, then Chytil. #2 center is a vital black hole.

If you do nothing, stay the course, hope that the young core improves, hope that you vets will not backslide, you run the risk of never taking that step. Yes, you run the risk of severe cap hell if you go for it now. But is that what we should do?

For me, I hang on to our young players and don't make any moves that, while they might help in the short term, will hamstring us down the road. But if we do that, will one day we may look back and rue the time when we didn't gamble and "go for it."

But, it is an interesting question and one I'm sure Drury wrestles with daily. I'm only a fan, but I wrestle with it also.

so how much is Trochek going to get as a ufa?
Rangers almost signed Danault last year . They likely will go up to 5.5 whether we think it’s a good idea or not

I think defining a window becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we think our window is 3 years, and we do everything we can to win in that time frame, what happens in year 4? Our assets will be gone, because we'll have spent them trying to win during our window. The team will likely be in a poor cap situation and have little depth.

I'd rather be patient. Let the kids continue to mature, make moves where it makes us better both short and long term, and try to keep the farm stocked so we can afford to replace older vets with younger, cheaper players.

I agree, GAGLine, that's what I would do too. But it is a fascinating question. The most important players for me are K'Andre Miller and Schneider. If both become legit, high end first pair D in this perceived window, I do feel we can be an elite team. I am also a believer in Chytil at the #2 center spot, Laf on the first line, and KK growing into himself, I stay the course but understand, and will accept it (not that I have a choice), if Drury goes in the other direction.

We need to be extremely cautious with Russian players, prospects, and potential draft picks going forward. That Flyers news is bonkers.

I'd take any Russian player off the board for a first round pick right now. Maybe even for the second round as well. I mean, there would be exceptions for truly elite prospects, but we also need to be pretty cognizant that this situation isn't getting better any time soon.
The Rangers don’t have a pick until a late second - a good spot to take whoever they consider fallen a 1st round talent.

More than Strome

Copp on Danault’s wing would be so so so silly

More than we can afford - just like Copp & Strome.

If one of these three are the target, then we have to wait until the first two are signed and there's less cash available in the UFA market. Even then, year 2 of the contract is dubious for the Rangers

The problem is to trade for a 2nd line C that’s ufa next year will cost alot

It’s like trading for Copp again

It’s that or sign a ufa and risk the multi year deal

Honestly, the Rangers have to hope that Chytil can put it together as a 2C. It would solve a ton of problems. I'm not convinced that they believe that, though.

Zibanejad
Chytil
Goodrow
Rooney/UFA 4C

There’s zero chance they don’t being in a C
Maybe it’s a 3rd like cheaper guy and then pray Chytil moves up

Goodrow is a winger ideally imo

Going to be interesting but we have to get through the draft first so likely a few weeks away from knowing

If they trade Chytil+Lundkvist in a package for Miller, where is that such a sacrilegious move that’ll have Drury roasting on a skewer? He went out and got Copp—got them to within TWO wins of a Final with our core and goalie. If you go get Miller, you increase those odds for next year, in my opinion. Rental? Again, assess after next season. He knows he has to sign Laf and Miller. We watch this trophy hoisted every year, it’s never us. Never. 1994, before that, 1940. Should we stand Pat with the best goalie in hockey at $5.6M or try to acquire a stud C to center our $11.6M star? Come on, the answer is clear. Chytil and Lundkvist are replaceable, the doubts and regrets in three years of not going for it will haunt many.

There is a twitter account from Vancouver that sometimes has good information. All of the Vancouver media types follow him on twitter.

Some comments are trying to dismiss the tweet out of hand while someone said this guy is usually right.

Miller is a rental. He wants an eight year extension at $8M-$9M AAV.

The Athletic had a story on the Canucks a few days ago. Some fans were commenting how the Wild-Kings trade doesn't really help the Canucks cause. LA gave up a #1 pick and Faber for Fiala and the Kings signed Fiala to a 7 year extension. Miller is a rental for most of these teams. The Rangers don't have the cap space for an extension.

People tried to connect the Devils trading the 2nd pick overall for Miller or Fiala. Fitzgerald isn't doing that.

Ottawa at #7 liked Fiala but they didn't want to pay him nearly $8M AAV.

LA traded a #1 pick in a below to average draft and Faber who was seen his value increase since he was selected in the 2nd round a couple of years ago for Fiala with a seven year extension.

Flat cap NHL reality is setting in. We will see how many players get shutout on the free agent market and settle for less.

This is what happens when you wait to long to trade a player.

Gonna be interesting to watch the dominos fall this year.

Highly likely that Strome/Copp are going to be faced with the decision of going to Ottawa/Seattle for $6M or back to the NYR on a 3-4 year deal for $5 or less. What contender is giving them both that bag? If they do, there will be ripple effects elsewhere that the NYR can take advantage of.

Smart move for the NYR at this point is definitely to be patient. A good option will shake lose.

Edit - especially since this is going to continue for another 1-2 off seasons. If Strome and Copp and Kadri get paid this summer, how are Miller and Larkin etc getting their full worth in 2023? There is only so much money in the system. Completely unsustainable situation the NHL has set up.

The reason we never hoist the trophy is because we keep doing what you are saying we should do.

Goodrow can’t drive the offense for an effective third line as C. Better as a bottom-six wing. His contract will never not be a problem for us.
