It's interesting that the best teams annually seem to acquire players at the deadlines and often re-sign them. It's like they do their due diligence ahead of time and then target players they want to keep so they don't give away assets for nothing. Tampa does it ALL THE TIME. McDonagh. Callahan. Coburn. Paul. They also targeted Coleman and Goodrow who had term left. Colorado is doing it with Lehkonen. Pittsburgh did it with Carter. Washington did it with Mantha. Boston with Hall.

Why is it so much to ask that a team on the rise to not jettison multiple picks and prospects for pure rentals and that they do their due diligence on players BEFORE trading for them?
I think the Rangers liked Copp a lot and then him having the best hot streak in point scoring of his career has led to his agent pursuing a price range outside of what we want

Not like Vince would know, his articles are all just things we talk about here but behind a paywall
I truly don't get the circlejerk for Vince amongst Ranger fans, he is an awful writer who never offers any interesting insight nor does he even break news. He always baits people on Twitter claiming to have the inside scoop, then posts his nothingburger article. A recent example:

Here's what he calls "info"...

"The first domino to fall could be a new contract for restricted free agent Kaapo Kakko.
The surprising decision to scratch him for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final signaled that the No. 2 overall pick from the 2019 draft is no longer in the untouchable trade category for the Blueshirts, but multiple people with knowledge of the situation told lohud.com, part of the USA TODAY Network, that any rumors about the 21-year-old forward wanting out have been overblown.
Kakko expressed that himself during breakup day earlier this month.
"I like to play here," he said. "(It adds) maybe more motivation. I want to show I'm better than that."

Another option at RW is Vitali Kravtsov. While it's difficult to predict exactly what the future holds given his checkered history with the organization, it's worth noting that optimism about the 2018 first-round pick playing a role on the team is higher than it's been at any point in the last nine months.

The 22-year-old recently signed a one-year, $875,000 deal, and if he's still with the team come September, the Rangers will have to keep him on the NHL roster to avoid exposing him to waivers. But the possibility of a trade can't be dismissed.
The Rangers prioritized holding their top prospects at this year's trade deadline, preferring to deal draft picks instead. That not only keeps cheap alternatives in place to fill holes in the lineup, but also maintains ammunition for potential deals.

Kravtsov remains a player that team president Chris Drury can actively shop this offseason. The same can be said for his stable of defensemen prospects, led by Zac Jones, Nils Lundkvist and Matthew Robertson. In fact, very few assets – if any – are considered off limits for a team that's aiming for a championship next season."

Everyone hates on Larry Brooks but he actually provides inside info and is an interesting writer/personality.

It's really funny how all the talk now is how the Avs won the cup through the draft starting in 2012 with Landeskog. They got Byram's pick from the Duchene trade.

The top end of the team was built through the draft and trades to tweak their problems (depth scoring) and supplemented that depth through vet minimums or ELCs that fit the style they wanted -- fast aggressive forecheck.

That's the style Turk wants but our bottom 6 doesn't support that to compliment our stars. Motte and Laf ended up being the best in the bottom 2 lines of playing that style.

The Rangers "problem" is simply that the drafted core is young and will need another 2-3 years for maturity. That's all.

"Fixing" the bottom/middle six with expensive UFA's is attempting to win now, while creating severe headaches/impasses in the very near future. Colorado solved their depth problems through smarts and for cheap, very cheap in USD terms. The Rangers can have a very, very good team for a very long time if they let it all come together. On the other hand, the main threat for the Rangers is Sather style management debacles. Be smarter.

The bolded is extremely contradictory unless mediocrity is consider “sufficient”, but to each their own.

That group just came off an ECF visit in which they were up 2-0 in the series against the reigning champs. And that after winning (2) 7 Game Series. Maybe they do have the right people and just need more time. Was this considered?

I can understand having a certain threshold with how much one is willing to pay Copp, but he is definitely a quality player. So is Motte. And guess what, they thrived here in NY. They are already used to the staff and expectations. You for some reason think its so simple to just grab someone else out of thin air and think they will adapt and adjust seamlessly. And you are taking that risk for what could be a marginal upgrade to what we know works, which is Copp and Motte.

Its silly. Motte is the type of player you win with. He plays that style. He is at a good age too. He showed us how effective he can be. Lock him up
Our team had a nice run but we won 1 game more than we lost. We did not dominate. The Isles, Oilers and more recently the Lightening all kept trying to improve personal while winning multiple cups. Sitting still because we made the ECF is a mistake. MTL went from the finals to trash in 1 season. Motte had 0 points vs Pitt and TBL. Our winning the cup is not dependent on him. Nobody is saying if we kept Copp, Braun, or Motte that they would have won the cup.

He doesn't nor never has had the tool box to be a top 6 center on a winning team. His vision is limited, his hockey iq is average at best. Everyone is ignoring the obvious with him because we have no young centers. There's nothing wrong with him being a 3c, people just have to open their eyes to see what he really is. Gallant pretty much nailed it on the head, he's Lars Eller.
How can you say that about a 22 year old? If the guy hasn't progressed by the time he's 25, thats fine and i can get on board with that. But a 22 year old centreman, there's no way you can definitively say he's a 3c ceiling player.

Why would you want one of the better goal scorers in the NHL to go to NJ? That's insane.
This x1000. Do not want to see him in NJ. That offense is already electric, if they add him you could argue they are a top 7-10 offense in the league. No thanks.

I think the Rangers liked Copp a lot and then him having the best hot streak in point scoring of his career has led to his agent pursuing a price range outside of what we want
Yep, Copp playing with Panarin put the nail in the coffin for him being here long term.

Tampa has no state tax. Huge advantage. That's #1.

#2 is the Rangers tax. Rangers always have to pay more to keep guys because of the cost of living in NY and because of the reputational thing; go all in on UFAs/big acquisitions. That's because of five decades of doing that.

The Rangers don't have the patience.

New Larry article says Copp & Strome are going to free agency and the Rangers looking at the trade market for a 2C. Dubois, Scheifele, JT, Horvat, Larkin, Dach all mentioned. Lots of smoke around the trade market for us, should be an interesting week before the draft.
Not unhappy about this TBH. I like both of them but not too thrilled about locking either up for long term, and as I've been saying I think it's time for Strome to go regardless of the contract.

was just a thought waiting on some o/n markets to open. dont keep up on all things flyers, had just seen him and werenski on ig that gave impression. either way not sure it matters if flyers looking to go younger but idea was a bad one before any of that...hes a rw, not sure why ive always thought he played c. thats on me...bad idea from the jump just gotta eat the L
Don’t get down on yourself. We‘ve all had “Schmako” days

The bottom of the lineup will be able to figure itself out over time. There should be no rush to try and set the bottom 6. You can get pieces for a 3rd or 4th to complete the lineup and add depth at the deadline.

We need to establish the long term top 6 forwards for this team. Common sense right now says they have the following for the top 6:

Zibanejad, Panarin, Kreider, Chytil, Kakko, and Lafreniere.

Three of these guys are locked in. The other three are 1st rounders, the last two #2 and #1 overall picks. Othmann may solve some of the bottom 6 issues. So could Cuylle. Brett Berard may be someone who fills in a spot on a wing after his college season. Kravtsov may fill a valuable 3rd line role. Finding a checking line center at the deadline isn't unforeseen. Still have Goodrow and Blais as a foundation for it.

Colorado did do some of the bargain bin shopping, but their bottom lines were made up of Sturm and Cogliano at the deadline, O'Connor in his first full NHL season (UDFA btw), Aube-Kubel as a waiver claim, Newhook was a pick, and Compher who was developed by the team after being in the O'Reilly trade.

TB has Point and Cirelli. It doesn't really matter what goes on around them because TB has the middle of the ice solidified. The Rangers can't keep spending assets to address the center ice position. Drury traded a #1, #2, Barron and a 5th for Copp and a 6th. The Rangers are trying to sign Copp and presumably they will play him in the middle. The Rangers can't keep throwing assets at this position for a 1 or 2 year fix. Big assets too.

What is Florida planning? I read the Panthers want to keep Giroux and/or Chiarot. Pierre LeBrun mentioned that a few days ago. You constantly hear about Malkin finding his way to the Panthers. Zito needs to clear money. Duclair will go on LTIR but his $3M is not enough. I read the Panthers want to keep Marchment. He is also a group III. I guess Zito can pay some team to take Hornqvist's $5.9M.

Florida will need to clear money. Sam Bennett.

Vince doesn't have the sources of someone like staple yet. But overall he's a fairly inuitive writer and has a good grasp of incorporating analytics in his writing and doing some solid research.
Vince understands modern hockey better than any other beat writer we have.
Thats not to say he's always right but alot of the stuff he misses on is because he's willing to throw out an opinion thats fairly modern and often inline with what alot of us on the board want.
When he does pieces like this though he's trying to be as factual as possible, whereas when he does pure opinion/suggestion pieces hes more open.
Also brooks is interesting because he's got shit opinions. Brooks misses the 1980s style of hockey.

He hasn't done well in Chicago. Chicago is in such a bad place through and through they may just throw out the baby with the bathwater along with the whole bath tub in Toews and Kane.
Reminds me of something I posted a few years ago. I was told that Chicago brass reportedly had a shouting match the day before the draft on whether to take Dach or Zegras. Bowman made the final call, pissing off a couple of scouts. Bet they wish they had that one back.

That said, I’d trade for Dach in a minute. I saw more than enough from him in the bubble. Classic change of scenery guy.

Eh if I want analytical insight there are randoms on social media, or even posters here who provide much better insight than him. He's just a really dull personality, kinda dumb, and doesn't have inside sources. I also don't even see him post much about analytics either. Someone who offers great analytical breakdowns of things in layman's terms would be Steve Valiquette IMO.

When I'm reading a Vince article, if I didn't know any better I would think it was just some of those fan blogs parroting information that the entire world already knows. He has no personality, writing style, anything that sets him apart. There is a genius in what Brooks does, you know a Brooks article when you read it. Same with sir avgaard hockey professor or bernmeister, when I'm scrolling and read their posts I can tell it's them without even seeing the username or avatar.

I know writers aren't typically as interesting as broadcasters and such, but think of any form of entertainment. You remember the ones who stand out, have a unique personality, etc. You remember the Don Cherries, whether you like what they have to say or not. Larry Brooks is a legend and will be remembered, Vince will not.
