Exactly. And at some point, something has to give. And that something is probably Buch.

On the plus side, they’d be trading him at peak value.
Unfortunately I agree. The rangers made their bed with signing Kreider long term. I said it at the time that it was a mistake and it’s become two fold in the sense that buch will have to be gone

Yandle (in) and McDonagh (out) had term left.

I didn’t say it doesn’t ever happen. But it’s not as common and now with a flat cap teams are less looking for term on the cap going forward and more looking for rentals to go all in on the playoffs. Anyone knows they’ll have to give Buch a raise if they’re trading for him. They probably want to wait until after the playoffs to look at their cap situation and what they may do next. Ditto Strome. He’s been good but maybe you hesitate to add his 4.5M next season if you’re not sure he’ll be as successful on a different team. It’s not impossible to make something happen but the market and the situation are different and we don’t have a ticking clock to get something done today.

Boston has also added and will probably add more. We are staying put.

I'm not worried about them adding Hall, and their defense is in a shambles right now. Last night they iced these players on defense:

Mike Reilly isn't going to make a significant difference. They'll get McAvoy back soon, most likely, and maybe Grzelcyk as well, but Carlo is still listed as week to week.

They also have problems in goal. Swayman has done well for them, but he isn't Rask or Halak. Last night Vladar played and got lit up. Rask will probably be back soon, but it may take him a few games to shake the rust off.

We have a good chance to catch them.

Quite honestly, I'm sure that the Rangers FO are operating with the mindset that they want the team to still play quasi competitive games down the stretch, which is absolutely fine.

Do the likes of Smith, Howden and Rooney really tip the scales from being competitive to waiving the white flag? Its not like we're looking to move Buchnevich or Strome right now.

Even if the return is just mid to late round picks, it seems pretty short sided to hold onto guys who in the both short and long term, will have little impact on this team. Even if you walk into a draft with say, 13 picks, you can always swap a pick this year for next year (this happens all the time) or package picks together to move up to get someone you like (which also happens all the time) so maybe you walk into the draft with 13 selections, but you leave only making 7 or 8 picks.

tl;dr: It doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me to hold onto everyone.

Again, if he gets moved it’s not a matter of desire so much as a potential matter of economics based on previous decisions.

I have no problem with a desire to keep Buch. There’s a damn good argument to be made for that tactic. But we need to stop presenting this topic as if it’s because the Rangers and fans want more picks and prospects.

That’s not what is prompting the conversation.

Moving one of your best players, who is just emerging to become a consistent, high-level producer in this league, as you're beginning to come out of a rebuild, is insane. If you are being forced to move a player like this because of economics, even more so. Buchnevich is more important to this team than most other players. He brings a fire and tenacity night in night out that almost no one else does.

I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying as to the reason they're perhaps taking inquiries, but if it came to fruition, it's just so utterly irresponsible. Just a gigantic mistake signing Kreider that you could see coming from a mile away.

Wow haven’t watched Dallas much but is he not an important part of that team anymore? Dallas is still in the playoff mix

They're in the mix as much as the Rangers are (well probably more so, as they have games in hand on Nashville.)

But I think they see the writing on the wall too. Nashvilles been pretty fire lately and they're going to get healthier.

Trade Brendan Smith for a 4th round pick.

Then to replace him trade a 6th or 7th for a cheap veteran depth D-man they can use down the stretch to make a playoff push. If the D-man they acquire has term then expose him to Seattle.

Trade Brett Howden for a 3rd.

The challenge is that Kreider debate notwithstanding it happened. As it did signing Trouba and others.

So right decision or wrong decision, we have those factors to consider, as well future moves that will include Zibanejad and others.

Buch can become an UFA in about 15 months. That timing coincides with other contracts expiring, and last year’s rookies getting their second contracts, etc. etc.

So someone we like is going bye-bye in the not so distant future.
