I don't really understand the Scott Laughton idea.

He played center toward the start of the year but has played mostly LW.

The player and his role I get, and AV is their coach, yet it kind of seems like their fans think he is a better LW than a center, at least from the threads I have read.

Rangers have two 3rd rounders (their own and Buffalo from the Vesey trade) and three 4th rounders (their own, LA's from Lemiuex, and Ottawa from Namestnikov).

Pay attention to these chips in the next 48 hours.

They might go for a cheap upgrade on the third pair or bottom six, flip a Smith/Howden/Gautheir/Hajek for a pick and package the return with one or two of the above picks for an upgrade, or use a few of these picks as a cherry on top in an unlikely but big trade involving Buch/Strome/Georgiev.

Nothing finite just something to look out for.
Is this like insider info or are you just speculating?

He is still a better center than most of what we have. He is a clear upgrade over Howden/Rooney. He plays physical with an edge. He can PK and chip in a little offensively.

This team is too top heavy. They need the complimentary role players that will make them tougher to play against. Laughton does that.

Okay, but he is also going to be UFA coming off 2.3M cap hit.

for reference this is the thread I read the more recent posts about him.

Confirmed with Link: - Laughton re-signed, 2 years $2.3 M AAV (Thread From 2019)

Youre referencing a thread that started in 2019, not to mention the Flyers circumstances are different than ours. Sure maybe playing wing there is more suitable for them, but he is just over 50% on faceoffs in his career, is accustomed to a lot of defensive zone starts, and brings all the other aforementioned elements that this team doesnt have enough of.

That thread goes through 2021

Here is another more recent thread in the trade forums and even there the Flyers fans posting are mostly saying he is a wing who can move up and down the lines, and could be a 4th line center.

Is that really someone the Rangers should be signing as a UFA at 3 - 4 M cap hit given the LWs they already have?

Value of: - Scott Laughton rental

Groton asleep at the wheel. Smith has a chance to be the only Rangers defenseman to not be traded or buyout and actually finish a 4+ year long contract in I BELIEVE the last 15-20 years at the very least.

Don’t... don’t we still have two full days until the deadline?

That is exactly what we need him to be. And the fact that he is comfortable on the wing, can move up and down the lineup, and PK is a plus. Oh and the physical edge he plays with. And I think he can be a competent 3C as well.

Yes I would give him $3-$4 million AAV for those attributes and the flexibility he will give us over the next 3-4 years. If someone in that time frame shows us he is replaceable, his cap hit is very movable.

I think this post is the most comparable to the Rangers situation,

Giroux Couts Konecny
JVR Hayes Voracek
Lindblom Patrick Farabee

....then have Frost in waiting next year if we lose a F in the ED. Just no top 9 spot for JTC. It's the same reason why despite Laughton's numbers and only being 26 in his prime, we just don't have a spot for him at 3+ million next year.

The Rangers have all that too, they can be paying 3-4M for someone who is going to play 4th line center, or maybe move up the LW when they have Panarin, Kreider, Laff all already playing that position.

Even Bennett, his qualifier would be 2.555M

Rangers can be paying a ton of money for a 4th line. They are already going to be paying way too much for LW and RD as is.

At some point you need to fix the bottom 6. This team will not take the next steps forward with journeyman and young kids who dont fit the bottom 6. You have a bunch of kids in your top 9 and top 4 who will either still be on their ELCs or manageable 2nd contracts over the next 3-4 years.

You keep harping on this $3-$4 million AAV as if its connor mcdavid money. Its not. Its movable if things change, if you end up finding a cheaper alternative whether it be internally developed or outside the organization.

I don't think they need to fix the bottom 6 anytime soon. You need a decent bottom 6 for now and you can always supplement that bottom 6 at the TDL once you're a contender. They need to sort out the core first. I have no desire to have a 4th line filled with anyone who makes over 1.3m. Not now. Later maybe.

Barron-Rooney-Blackwell will be a perfectly acceptable fourth line next year.

Rooney is the first competent fourth line center we have had in a really long time, not sure why people hate him so much on here.
I would guess one of the two of rooney and blackwell is gone in expansion

Shetys and Lindgren entry levels ends after this season. Buch also a RFA

Fox, Kakko, Kravtsov, will be ending their entry level after next season.

Laff, Miller the year after, along with Zbad and Strome beocming UFAs,

It's 0 to 3 years left, not 3 or 4.

The Canucks did a lot of damage to their rebuild by trying to buy what the Islanders have and giving all those big contracts to bottom six grinders. I didn't want the Chris Kreider contract, but they had no idea they'd be getting Laf and in a couple years he should be one of the league's top third line players: a big, fast, experienced guy who scores goals and probably gets leaned on for the PK more than he does now.
