I hear Barron will be given a look further ahead. Something is going to have to give. Maybe not now. But soon. Very soon. Will be very interesting to follow.
Blackbeard is on an astounding 25 goal pace over the regular season. At league minimum salary. Signed for another year. Whose Cherry could we pick?

Solution: Trade Howden.

Islanders would have been the best spot IMO

I still say we can get a Hayes-esque package for Strome. And see what teams offer for Buch. And I'd still shop Georgiev, Howden and Smith.

I mean Smith is worth what a 4th like Nemeth got ?

maybe Georgiev to save cap space but I don’t trust Kinkaid and they a G to expose in expansion

I guess they could upgrade Hajek in expansion protection but Roberson will get a look soon though

I'd say the only dilemma is Blackwell and Gauthier; if those players both have value, and we can only keep one of them in the expansion draft, it's fine IMO to try to cash out on the one we aren't going to protect.

Who plays center then?

Strome has a solid well rounded game for sure. All the props to him but there isn't a center on this team, including Howden that won't be able to transcend centering Bread.

We should protect Gauthier. You gamble on talent and youth.

As he should, and so should Reunanen and Zac Jones is coming up the rear as well

Rosi was a really good player for us and was always criminally underrated. The biggest issue with him was there were multiple albatrosses when he was on the roster and it made his cap hit seem awful. Trouba is a fine player. Yes, the cap hit is sizable, but it's also not close to what a true #1 would garner. I'm pretty fine with it for now and it's not like he's dead weight.
For sure. It’s just like Rosivzal. Fans turned on him because of his deal.

Trouba had horrible partners all last season. This year he has not been the problem with the Rangers whatsoever.

I should also add to my previous post - I don't think Trouba is worth what he is being paid, I think that a more apt contract for him would have been like 6 x 6.5

However, if I had to reason why the Rangers paid up, is because they knew what they were getting with him and they wanted a steady, good skating, and good character veteran D that was also young enough to grow with their rebuild to help steady the ship along the way. I think they were willing to pay extra to ensure that they got something in that department, even if Trouba isn't consistently what we hoped he would max out at.
But the problem is that Trouba wasn’t going to take 6x6.5

With consideration to the 81.5 flat cap. I starting to think we should extend Strome instead of trading him. A righty center that clicks with Panarin. Maybe 5.5 for 4
Considering the cap isn’t moving I think this is more than a reasonable offer.

An a+ prospect would be newhook or the like.
Both cap and depth say make that trade.

I would offer up a LOT for Newhook, but Colorado is pretty much set on their wingers. They would probably want an upgrade at LD, but that could be accomplished without moving Newhook. I think the only way he'd be available would be through a monster deal where we sent Zib retained for Newhook+. Not saying I would make that deal, but I don't see anything else that entices Colorado to even think about putting him on the table.

Zegras is another interesting C prospect. Anaheim has a couple of really good young Cs. They could use a young ppg winger like Buch, possibly an upgrade on the D and/or us taking back one of their bad contracts. In terms of trade chips, we have more of the things that Anaheim needs--could just be a matter of finding the right package that both sides might agree on. Either way, this would be a post-expansion draft move, as I'd bet Anaheim would want to wait and see if the Kraken take one of their bad contracts for veteran leadership or somesuch.
