Lots of Rangers fans might not like David Quinn but I don’t get that feeling from Davidson and Gorton that he’s walking the plank. Mostly it seems to me an exercise in wish fulfillment when someone here says something about Quinn’s days being numbered. One of the things that Quinn talked about in the offseason was the Rangers needing to tighten up the defense and the Rangers have done exactly that.

Even in this situation it won’t be a “modest” raise. $6-6.5m range so I wouldn’t call it modest.

The main problem with the second power play unit is it doesn’t have someone to really quarterback it. This is the area we miss DeAngelo the most. It’s not that Brooks is wrong about what he says about the first power play unit but the second power play unit hasn’t scored a single goal the entire season. Kakko, Lafreniere, Chytil, Trouba, Miller have exactly 0 power play points between them. Buchnevich has 5 assists but they all come from time spent on the first power play unit so to me Brooks is kind of right and kind of wrong at the same time here. Giving the second power play unit more ice time is not likely to lead to more power play goals either.

Exactly my point too!

The first unit h0gs time for sure but that lack of a quarterback for the second unit put’s it behind the 8ball right from the get go. We need another QB besides Fox.

I wasn’t a big fan of DeAngelo for a lot of reasons but this is where we really miss him. He can set people up and you got to respect his shot too.

The ironic thing is it would probably serve the team better to take its leading PP point producer off of 1PP and onto 2PP. The first unit would likely diminish but not much, while Fox’s presence would improve the second unit in many areas it's been failing.

They're coming in the form of Lundkvist/Jones, but they're not here yet.

Like so much with this team, the real problem we face is that they're still in (arguably/hopefully) the last year of transition. The pieces are there... you can see them... but they won't really come together until the next season or two.

Lundkvist is more of a shooter rather than a QB and being a RHS I don’t think he’d help 2PP unless we’re talking switching with Fox which is HIGHLY unlikely.

Jones is not coming for 21-22. :(

Martin really solidified the defensive scheme. It’s night and day from last year. It gives me hope that if the rangers do find a solid offensive coach Or assistant coach, with the amount of talent we have on the roster the PP and overall offense should be a lot better as well

I just didn't think he'd make THIS much of a difference. Its nice to see him rejuvenated with a bunch of great D kids. Next year I think he'll be able to squeak in one or two of our other A grade prospects.

I can't talk enough about looking at the rebuild teams excluding the juggernauts (CHI/PIT/lesser extent WAS). NYI/BUF/EDM all have failed to build a deep and solid D. We're basically there already. We just need 2/3 of Krav/Kak/Laf to become elite scorers and we're on a path this franchise has never dreamt of.

and I'm honestly not even worried. Very curious to see what Krav and Chytil top out at. This team could look so much different based on the growth of these 4 kids over the next year.

For me, the problem with the PP isn't the personnel, it's the urgency.

When NYR have found success this year on the PP it's been when they make quick decisive plays. One two punches, get the puck on the net and look for rebounds and deflections.

What hasn't been as successful this year are the lengthy elaborate passing plays culminating in a one time shot. That worked well last season but we've been poor at it this year.

So just a policy of 'get as many pucks on net in one pp' would be what I'd be emphasizing.
Fox definitely holds the puck longer then tony did, with his no look passes, etc. not saying that it’s bad just different. As soon as the puck got to ADA it was off his stick whether it was a shot or pass he definitely pressed it hard and fast. He was also far more of a threat to shoot then fox is at the point. To me that and zibby s slapper are the 2 most noticeable differences between this year and last

So f***ing backwards. So Larry is arguing for giving more time to the unit that scored one measly goal??? Sorry now THIS would be an entitlement.

Force Quinn’s hand. Make something happen in the limited time, even as little as zone entry and control, high danger chances etc. PP2 has done absolutely nothing to deserve any time increase. This is the cause of PP1 getting more time, not vice versa.
What do we expect them to accomplish with 20 seconds of PP time at a clip? Their total power play time is misleading, its aggregate. They don't have a chance to set up and generate a chance.

And shouldn't we be investing at least a little bit towards the future by giving them more than scraps?

I wouldn’t even ask for goals but the unit can’t enter zone or keep the puck even when by some miracle they do and absolutely nothing of the dangerous nature. Nothing...

How would taking Fox off the first PP unit not hurt it? Most likely it'll hurt the first unit and the second unit won't be improved enough to counteract that. They get like 15 seconds anyway.

No one is taking that horrible Bob contract off their hands.

I never got that move...you sign a future franchise netminder in Knight in June 2019, and then a week and half later sign one of the biggest goalie contracts ever for 7 years?

Maybe I should've expected it from that joke of a franchise.

First of all I hardly am advocating for this other than a hypothetical musing.

But Panarin, Strome and Zibanejad could take on Fox’s responsibilities (controlling and distributing the puck) while giving this spot to a shooter.

The other part is that if PP1 is not going in a particular game - Quinn is out of options. And if such move were to be made then Foxes presence itself would dictate a more even split. Like an example from the last game where PP1 stayed for the face-off after a full minute on the ice - with Fox on PO2 there’d be a switch to the second unit in this situation.

Fox is quite cerebral and extremely smart on ice. A beast at keeping the puck in play and in the offensive zone. But substantially slower than ADA on the PP and with a weaker shot. Question is if he can still develop a bit here. I would think so... time will tell

Despite our PP woes, Fox is 2nd in the league among dmen with 17 points on the PP. Hedman is first with 20. So I'd say Fox is doing fine there.

We really need to stop moving the puck around the perimeter so much and looking for the perfect shot.

It seemed odd to me too, but people said that Knight's development and gradual increase in role to eventual full time starter for the Panthers would dovetail nicely with Bobrovsky's decline. We'll see what ends up happening.

Here is the solution:

PP1

Kreider
Panarin - Zib - Strome
Fox

Kakko
Lafreniere - Chytil - Buch

Completely agree. Leave FOXY out there but everyone else (as best they can) GET THE f*** OFF

If we had a deadly 1 - 2 punch on the PP things would be completely different in tight games... but we just leave the same guys out there for all 2 mins and while skilled, they can be defended against because its clear as day what the play they're looking for is.
