Maybe Krebs because Vegas is in all in mode.

Not getting Newhook or Lundell though.
There’s not going to be a lot of teams willing to move ELC contracts with a hard cap and expansion draft. More then likely if they need to improve or go for it, they rather trade 1st RD picks in a weaker draft

And there is the flip side.

Rangers would hang up for Buch for that.

I could see Vegas doing it considering how close they have been.

I could've seen Florida doing it before the Ekblad injury.

Edmonton or Colorado are not gonna deal Newhook or Holloway.

The main problem with the second power play unit is it doesn’t have someone to really quarterback it. This is the area we miss DeAngelo the most. It’s not that Brooks is wrong about what he says about the first power play unit but the second power play unit hasn’t scored a single goal the entire season. Kakko, Lafreniere, Chytil, Trouba, Miller have exactly 0 power play points between them. Buchnevich has 5 assists but they all come from time spent on the first power play unit so to me Brooks is kind of right and kind of wrong at the same time here. Giving the second power play unit more ice time is not likely to lead to more power play goals either.
they are not really set up for success. Getting 24 seconds of PP time without possession or zone entry is not the best way to help the kids succeed. Then we have our donkey PP setup, where no one moves and Trouba shoots.

The entirety of the PP is just bad. both units. Its agitating to watch

The first unit h0gs time for sure but that lack of a quarterback for the second unit put’s it behind the 8ball right from the get go. We need another QB besides Fox.

I wasn’t a big fan of DeAngelo for a lot of reasons but this is where we really miss him. He can set people up and you got to respect his shot too.

Last nights loss all but killed Calgary in the playoff chase. Changes are finally coming to that roster.

@Edge - think the Monahan/Lindholm ideas are revisited this summer prior to making a JE deal?
Personally would prefer this scenario with the notion that JE means Zibby is gone. I truly believe that Zibby is a top center on a contender.

There’s no need to have a second PP. There’s a massive drop off in scoring rates between PP1s and PP2s across the league. The only time you really need to have another unit is if the first unit was out for a while and drew the penalty, a double minor/major, or if the game is a blowout and you just want to give some other players time. Why would you intentionally put a worse unit on the ice? The PP is not the most tiring game state where players are racing up and down the ice they can handle playing the full time.

I will run the numbers again at some point today.

He'd have a bunch more goals if he did.
Not unless he was on the PP and playing 17.5 minutes per game as CK does . 9 of Ck's goals came on the PP 8 at even strength...Alex has 5 at even strength at 4? less minutes a game .....so there is that . Kreider does not score much when he is skating around in a fog when he is on vacation out there ,

I wonder if teams will offer and players will accept longer term deals in lieu higher dollars to get more guaranteed money in a weird time. For example, perhaps Strome looks for a long term 7 year deal at $6m as teams won’t have that $7-7.5m available for him.

Lots of Rangers fans might not like David Quinn but I don’t get that feeling from Davidson and Gorton that he’s walking the plank. Mostly it seems to me an exercise in wish fulfillment when someone here says something about Quinn’s days being numbered. One of the things that Quinn talked about in the offseason was the Rangers needing to tighten up the defense and the Rangers have done exactly that.
The Athletic put out new power rankings yesterday. Obviously opinionated but nonetheless.

“15. New York Rangers

Last week: 16
Record: 17-15-4, 38 points
Dom rank: 14
Sean rank: 16

“What you now hear is puttin’ fear in all the older ones”

The Rangers have the 19th best points percentage in the league, but a top 10 goal differential. We split the difference and ranked them 15th, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a big surge down the stretch. Everything is starting to come together and though it may be too late for them this year, the Rangers are definitely knocking at the door, ready to usurp the old guard in the East over the coming years.”

I think for us though that it feeds back into the narrative of Kakko’s and Lafreniere’s production. It’s like we have an abundance of forward talent—why shouldn’t we have a 2nd power play unit that’s at least somewhat productive? I think there are several reasons why it’s not but a main reason why is once Fox goes to the bench we don’t have another guy that can take charge and quarterback.

What I’ve seen from the second unit it’s entries over the blue line are very often stuffed and their puck retrieval’s on shoot ins are abysmal. When either Trouba or Miller do get the puck for some kind of set up they do not have the natural instincts necessary to move the puck to the best options quickly enough or to put another way they don’t have the natural instincts that players like Fox or Panarin have. DeAngelo did as well.

This was pretty much my expectation for this year
Next year I think is where they really put it together. They started the year focusing on team D and now the offense is coming because the D is more natural

Here is the data. PP1 TOI is approximated by the player on the team with the most TOI

I honestly had reverse expectations RE: Fwds & D. I didn't think the D would start to look so complete this season. I'm really impressed with them. Strong feeling the young F's really turn it on next year. I just think we'll have a much more complete team by playoffs next year.

Then is should be easy for a 1OA pick to outplay a guy who leads the team in goals while taking vacations and skating around in a fog.

Here is the solution:

PP1

Kreider
Panarin - Zib - Strome
Fox

Kakko
Lafreniere - Chytil - Buch

At this point I think lindholm and Eichel have similar returns, just for the sheer fact that lindholm isn’t disgruntled and the flames rather deal a bunch of guys before him. Monahan could go though

Martin really solidified the defensive scheme. It’s night and day from last year. It gives me hope that if the rangers do find a solid offensive coach Or assistant coach, with the amount of talent we have on the roster the PP and overall offense should be a lot better as well

They're coming in the form of Lundkvist/Jones, but they're not here yet.

Like so much with this team, the real problem we face is that they're still in (arguably/hopefully) the last year of transition. The pieces are there... you can see them... but they won't really come together until the next season or two.

Monahan needs a change of scenery right now. Its just not working in Calgary for him this year. Watched the game last night and he is certainly active and involved but things arent going his way. Had a clean look in between the circles and Smith made a great glove save. Took a penalty in a tight game.

I much prefer Lindholm but Monahan might come cheaper at this point. I dont know what the cost looks like. I prefer not to deal Buch.

Can they make a deal around 1st round pick, Howden, Gauthier, Robertson/Jones, 2nd round pick? Unlikely but for the rest of the year:

Kreider-Zib-Buch
Panarin-Strome-Kakko
Lafreniere-Monahan-Chytil
PDG-Rooney-Blackwell

Well, he isn't wrong that the kids need more time, but the entitlement thing is a weird angle. Is the FO trying to somehow shame the players here by hinting at Brooks whats going on?

So f***ing backwards. So Larry is arguing for giving more time to the unit that scored one measly goal??? Sorry now THIS would be an entitlement.

Force Quinn’s hand. Make something happen in the limited time, even as little as zone entry and control, high danger chances etc. PP2 has done absolutely nothing to deserve any time increase. This is the cause of PP1 getting more time, not vice versa.

For me, the problem with the PP isn't the personnel, it's the urgency.

When NYR have found success this year on the PP it's been when they make quick decisive plays. One two punches, get the puck on the net and look for rebounds and deflections.

What hasn't been as successful this year are the lengthy elaborate passing plays culminating in a one time shot. That worked well last season but we've been poor at it this year.

So just a policy of 'get as many pucks on net in one pp' would be what I'd be emphasizing.
